Random dog urinated all over my shoes. What do I do?

As the title suggests, a random dog urinated all over my shoes and jeans. A friend and I were in a local park, sat on a bench, when a dog runs over and does this completely out of the blue. The dog walker came over and apologised and took my details but I have yet to hear anything from them.

I was wearing suede shoes with fur detailing at the time so all hope of cleaning them is lost Sad the bottom of my jeans and ankles were also covered in urine which was incredibly unpleasant. Needless to say I had to go home and clean myself up so ended up having to cancel some of my plans for that day.

What would you do in my situation? Sadly the shoes were quite expensive although they were 6 months old. I’m annoyed that this person was not able to control their dog and i feel the owner has a responsibility to put things right. Any advise would be really helpful.

FFS do people actually think it’s likely the OP has real fur on her shoes? I don’t even know where you’d source any from. I also don’t get why blue suede + fur = hideous shoes; why are people so rude?

Hoping now you aren’t one of the mega minority who do actually still wear fur, know where to get it from and have the money to pay for it, OP...

But with regard to your post, YANBU and though I would be understanding at the time, I would feel disgusted and fucked off if they didn’t compensate me in case my shoes were ruined. If my kid smashed goods in a shop I’d pay, as I’m responsible for them. It’s the same deal with dogs as far as I’m concerned.

Ah, it can’t have been nice being sprayed with dog piss! I’d have struggled not to puke, tbh.

PenelopeFlintstone · 19/09/2019 00:01

Hi OP
Of course it’s gross and I’ve never heard of it before either.
Previously, when I’ve spilt anything on my suede shoes, or got marks on them from walking in sleet/slush (poor choice I know but when I was young I only had one pair of boots), I learned that I could wash them under a slow running tap. It’s important to get the whole boot wet so you don’t get tide marks. I would use a bit of liquid washing stuff if they smell of wee, or Biozet as it has the enzymes known to counter the smell of wee. I’ve used it myself on a sofa that a cat weed on - completely gone overnight.
The boots might not look 100% as good as they did but I reckon 90%.

iago · 19/09/2019 00:02

@frnanciscranford Puppies can be trained at a very early age: 8 to 10 weeks - to wee and poo on command. All assistance credited dogs do this. All it takes is a lot of close attention in the first two weeks. Canine Partners and Guide Dogs cannot let their dogs poop all over the place, so their dogs are trained to go in one place. Many
dog owners are lazy and do not put the time in to train their dogs.

It sounds like you’re angling for compensation to be frank. If that is the case you need to appropriately set your expectations, as although this is unpleasant/unhygienic it would not warrant a large pay out. Firstly you would have to negotiate with the dog’s owner and if they won’t engage, file a MCOL form for your quantifiable losses.

With the shoes, a court would expect you to take the reasonable step in cleaning the shoes first. If the shoes need a professional clean. you’d probably need to get a few different quotes and take an average. Likewise if they need to be repaired. If they need to be replaced, you’d probably need to pay for an independent report stating as such.

In terms of cancelling your day, it’s debatable whether this incident would warrant cancelling your plans. Therefore any losses incurred like unused tickets (etc) may not be able to be reclaimed. I doubt you’d get anything for ‘emotional distress’

Suede shoes with fur detail you'd wear in park? Uggs, gotta be. No-one would be daft enough to wear actual fancy shoes to a park full of mud and grass in the UK's unpredictable climate.

A dog pissed on DDs leg once. Me and my sister couldn't breathe for laughing much less take the details from the distraught, elderly owner. DD found it less amusing at the time but laughs about it now.

OP, I've machine washed Fuggs before and they turned out fine after a quick brush so I'm guessing the real deal would fare even better. Use the cold setting and only a dash of washing powder (too much and your suede shoes with fur detail will start blowing bubbles when they get wet).

BiologyIsntBigoted · 19/09/2019 01:21

My dog isn't allowed to approach other people in the park and if I see wandering over to someone she's recalled unless the person says they're fine and want to stroke her.

She's never not came back when recalled but I know accidents happen and there maybe a time she ignores me. If she did this I'd be mortified and pay for the shoes to be cleaned or replaced if they genuinely were fucked and ruined.

There's a bench in the park where we go and if people are say on it she's leashed as we walk past and isn't in a lash long enough to reach the people sitting on the bench.

I've had a dog piss on me and it didn't bother me and my friends thought it hilarious but that doesn't mean that someone else is childish and needs to grow for being pissed off about it either.

Topseyt · 19/09/2019 02:08

My labrador pissed on me once while on the lead beside me waiting his turn at his agility class. The rest of the class were in stitches. Grin It was a warm summer's day so I was wearing shorts rather than jeans, and a pair of trekking sandals. The club had an outdoor tap on a standpipe in the corner of the field so I just went over there and ran water on my lower leg and sandals.

He has never piddled on anyone else, and has never repeated it to me since that one occasion. I guess I should be flattered. He gave me a bit of a fright when he did it though. Shock Grin

It will wash out of your jeans. Not sure about suede shoes if they are real suede, although I am sure there are proprietary sprays and cleaners available.

All together now:

Or the much better Pitch Perfect version, 0.52 in. Featuring the Green Bay Packers.

PatricksRum · 19/09/2019 02:31

Absolutely disgusting.
OP, call the owner, they need to pay.
I'm with @Sparklingbrook I really don't understand how this is acceptable.
If it was a child peeing over someone's shoes MN would be out for blood but somehow it's OK if it's a dog. Hmm

1forAll74 · 19/09/2019 02:35

This is a ridiculous post, you can just wash and clean everything, and you should be doing it, instead of writing on here.

Alicewond · 19/09/2019 03:11

Did op ever post a pic of said ruined shoes?

Shannith · 19/09/2019 04:11

Anyone else singing "don't you, don't you piss on my blue (with fur detailing) suede shoes?"

Alicewond · 19/09/2019 04:20

To be honest I’m representing the dog in any legal battles. No evidence of damages to the shoes and plenty of “good boy” character witnesses

Sparklingbrook · 19/09/2019 07:06

Well after sleeping on it I still think it’s unacceptable. But I know far more (conflicting information) about dogs and their pee habits than is strictly necessary. Grin

Hoppinggreen · 19/09/2019 07:14

All the people suggesting OP contact the dog owner to ask him/her to pay for shoes cleaning - she doesn’t have their details! No idea why she’s asking what she should do, there’s nothing she can do

Oysterbabe · 19/09/2019 07:22

Then why did she say this?

Random dog urinated all over my shoes. What do I do?
Hoppinggreen · 19/09/2019 07:26

Apologies oyster you are right, I thought I had RTFT but missed that one

Topseyt · 19/09/2019 07:29

Hoppinggreen,, she says she does have their details.

However, since all affected items are easily washed, especially the jeans, then there is no point in her contacting them. Jeans in washing machine and spray and rinse the shoes Job done.
