I’ve just made myself some salt and pepper on toast. First discovered as a poor student when literally all I had in the house was value white sliced bread, cheap margarine and salt and pepper. It’s very nice! I’m now 41 and I make it with nice bread and butter, Maldon salt and freshly ground pepper though Smile

Sometimes I like to eat a bit of stock cube too

Anyone else?

manners I am blown away by the thought of vanilla ice cream with herbs/dried sauces. I think. I do think - just imagined a little hot smoked paprika. What an idea !

vampirethriller · 20/09/2019 10:07

Just remembered when I was in secondary school we used to buy chocolate iced buns from the canteen and dip them in the instant tomato soup, at break time. It was great. Not sure I'd try it now though.

Mannersstillcostnothing · 20/09/2019 12:33

@HeronLanyon you could be on to something! Wink

AdaColeman · 20/09/2019 13:24

toffeeghirl Try cream cheese eg Philly, with apricot jam on wholemeal toast!

FoodologistGirl · 20/09/2019 13:40

I often have marmite on toast with sliced banana on top. I’ve got a lot of people into eating this now too. Its a great Sweet and sour combo

letsdoit2 · 20/09/2019 14:03

tomato sandwiches
fried-bread fritters with lots of butter and marmalade on top
sugar sandwiches -I loved them when I was a kid but don't think I could eat them now

GuidoTheKillerPimp · 20/09/2019 15:50

I love a slurp of vinaigrette dressing from the jar. Or a spoonful of soy sauce.

Don’t know if anyone can remember frozen shallots which came with little balls of what I guess was a roux mixture: you simmered then and they cooked down into a sauce? I LOVED the frozen sauce balls!

Wotsits, or own-brand cheese puffs, dipped into salad cream. One of my old flatmates got me into it so there are at least two people who eat this.

Crumpets with Marmite and blue cheese spread. I used to use a blue cheese Laughing Cow triangle but haven't seen any for ages.

Pickled onion Monster Munch with cubes of cheddar in the hole. Tried it once with a tiny pickled onion instead. That was good.

Pickled beetroot slices with a sausage roll. Sausage roll must be sliced open and the beetroot hidden inside. Sausage roll also must be hot.

BeeFarseer · 20/09/2019 16:56

Oh! For drinks, I almost forgot because I've not had it for ages. A splash of balsamic vinegar in sparkling water. It's lovely over lots of ice.

Mimosa1 · 20/09/2019 16:57

Sliced bananas in chicken soup - delicious

Lvsel · 20/09/2019 16:58

Lime pickle with pitta bread.
Toast with hummus (dont think this one is so unusual)
Pasta cheese and tomato sauce (childhood)

I'm pregnant now and have gone off meat so tonight I'm getting mash potato and spicy rice from nandos

Qwerty19 · 20/09/2019 17:05

Marmite and salt and vinegar crisp sandwich
Choc spread on toast.. I thought everybody did but no one in RL that I know does.

French mustard on roast potatoes and chicken

shas19 · 20/09/2019 17:06

Cheese and honey on crumpets, salad cream sandwiches, cheese and sweetcorn toastie dipped in curry sauce, dairy lea triangles smothered on spicy nik naks

polkadotpixie · 20/09/2019 17:25

Spaghetti hoops and grated cheese but must be lukewarm, not hot or cold

Instant mash with tomato soup poured over the top

The former would be a serious contender for my last meal on death row 😂

Morado · 20/09/2019 17:32

Soy sauce on chips

Morado · 20/09/2019 17:34

Oh and when I was a kid I lived in Canada and it was the norm to eat uncooked instant noodles in school at break or lunch time. You'd just crush them, then pour then flavour packet, give it a shake and voila! Sometimes I still do it if I'm at a festival or something and I can't be bothered to go and cook them..

HeronLanyon · 20/09/2019 18:17

bee I’ve just tried that - genius. Thank you ! Have friend who’s been sober for a few years (after getting into dire straits) and I think he’d love it. I also have raspberry vinegar which I’ll try next (but perhaps give my stomach brief break). This thread is fantastic.

You can make a sort of Pimms-alike with balsamic vinegar. In a large jug mix:

Three tablespoons balsamic vinegar
Bottle of diet lemonade (or full sugar if you prefer)
Sliced orange, strawberries, mint leaves
Lots of ice

Lovely.

Just discovered a new one. Scratch meal tonight - one of those "hell's teeth it's 8pm and I haven't fed the kids!" moments. The first things that came to mind from what was in the fridge: tempura and garlic bread. So that's what we had:

Soy Sauce on Garlic Bread is AMAZING!

Daisychainsandglitter · 20/09/2019 22:58

Ready salted crisps and soft cheese yum!

Everythingnotsavedwillbelost · 20/09/2019 23:06

Crunchy nut cornflakes with double cream
Frazzles & butter sarnies on white bread
🙈

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 20/09/2019 23:10

Strawberry sandwiches - sliced strawberries, soaked in orange juice then put on top of bread spread with cream cheese, add black pepper then top with other slice of bread.

Cold, tinned pease pudding on crackers with tomato sauce.

SkiingIsHeaven · 20/09/2019 23:18

Cold marrowfat peas with Paul Newman's salad dressing. Delicious. Really makes you fart though.

SkiingIsHeaven · 20/09/2019 23:20

@StillCoughingandLaughing mashed potatoes and gravy sandwiches are my second guilty pleasure.

bluetongue · 21/09/2019 02:43

When I was a child I used to dunk plain biscuits in lemonade instead of tea or coffee. Never heard of anyone else doing it.
