To report to school what my DD told me about this lunchtime supervisor?

Dd(8) told me that yesterday she saw a lunchtime supervisor take a fish finger off the tray at the serving hatch with her fingers and eat it. Dd said no other adults saw, she has seen this staff member do this before.
Would you email school and pass on what dd said?

A few bits of context -

  • I believe dd, she is not likely to have made this up
  • lunchtime supervisor has been working there about 30 years. She’s very harsh with the kids (based on what dd has told me) and anecdotally other parents have said even the staff are a bit scared of her!
  • school has an outbreak of norovirus last week so have been very hot on infection control, washing hands etc.

I know she probably didn’t touch anyone else’s food, but it’s not right is it? If nothing else it’s unprofessional and sets a bad example to the kids. But I don’t want to bother the school if it’s not really a big deal.

Would you report it or leave it?

Yabu = I should not report it
yanbu = I should email the school about it

A good zombie thread though! Ah the halcyon days of school dinner hysteria BC.

Fish finger theft is serious, if you see something, say something.

A god Zombie thread indeed!

I'd forgotten it, but it has cheered me up already today!

Can I just say, for the record, that if anyone attempted to take one of my fish fingers (even when I was an 8 year old), they had better have been prepared to lose an arm.

In (slightly adapted) the words of that great philosopher, Joey Tribbiani "Schaden doesn't share food"

SchadenfreudePersonified · 31/08/2020 08:31

*good, not god

Dammit!

AppleKatie · 31/08/2020 08:32

😂missed this one the first time and it’s given me a good laugh.

The 2020 one with ‘what about the COVID’ subplot would be much less fun.

VintageStitchers · 31/08/2020 08:41

Ah, I see the witches are out of their coven again. Hmm

Of course you should report it. It’s disgusting behaviour from someone employed to serve food. If you knew someone had done that in the kitchen of your favourite restaurant, would you still be ok with it or would you still act childish and call it snitching?

It might be the school kitchen but your children are entitled to expect that kitchen staff preparing and serving food work to basic food hygiene standards.

And that’s without taking the recent outbreaks of Norovirus into account!

I sometimes pinch the odd chip when I'm on duty - it's not like I'm then giving it to a child to eat or riffling through the whole container. If a parent complained about this then I would be seriously rethinking a whole career in teaching!

Intelinside57 · 31/08/2020 08:47

People - this is a great example of why you need to at least read the most recent posts.

Bumping for posterity

@redolent Why? Genuinely curious.

Thefaceofboe · 31/08/2020 09:25

Some of the comments on here are disgusting about a child. Jesus

CannibalQueen · 31/08/2020 09:27

She picked it up and ate it. There's no more infection risk there than from kids who don't wash their hands after the toilet or who pick their nose in class.

TheHappyHerbivore · 31/08/2020 10:00

Hard to imagine anything I would care less about tbh.

GisAFag · 31/08/2020 10:04

As long as all the kids have food who cares. Waste goes in the bin.

Ohfrigginghellers · 31/08/2020 10:33

I am a lunchtime supervisor and I wouldn't do this because I don't think it's appropriate. Having said that I wouldn't report somebody for doing it although if I saw somebody doing it all the time I might be a bit 🤨

x2boys · 31/08/2020 10:41

Ah the days before COVID seems like a life time ago😂

IlovecatsyesIdo · 31/08/2020 10:53

Now I know what a Zombie thread is Blush
(I very nearly added my two penney’s worth about fish finger gate)!

@redolent Why? Genuinely curious.

It’s the first thread I read on AIBU. Made me nostalgic for the trivial school concerns of precovid days. Also replete with quality puns.
MinnieJackson · 31/08/2020 16:48

Report immediately! Fish fingers are a known gateway food. What will be next? A sausage? Some baked beans? It will eventually end up at the point of no return with her main lining custard and snorting flapjack crumbs Grin
