To report to school what my DD told me about this lunchtime supervisor?

Namechangingforthis2019 · 14/09/2019 14:03

Dd(8) told me that yesterday she saw a lunchtime supervisor take a fish finger off the tray at the serving hatch with her fingers and eat it. Dd said no other adults saw, she has seen this staff member do this before.
Would you email school and pass on what dd said?

A few bits of context -

  • I believe dd, she is not likely to have made this up
  • lunchtime supervisor has been working there about 30 years. She’s very harsh with the kids (based on what dd has told me) and anecdotally other parents have said even the staff are a bit scared of her!
  • school has an outbreak of norovirus last week so have been very hot on infection control, washing hands etc.

I know she probably didn’t touch anyone else’s food, but it’s not right is it? If nothing else it’s unprofessional and sets a bad example to the kids. But I don’t want to bother the school if it’s not really a big deal.

Would you report it or leave it?

Yabu = I should not report it
yanbu = I should email the school about it

This is a crazy thread, if only because 11% of people are this petty.

ElizaDee · 16/09/2019 13:11

I had fishfingers for dinner last night because of this thread. I didn't have them with chips and beans as planned, but in a brioche roll with tartar sauce.

They were delicious and anyone stealing one of mine would feel my fork Grin

PlaceYourItemInTheBaggingArea · 16/09/2019 13:22

I'm sure the op has got the message and feels really GILLty.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/09/2019 13:28

brioche, you say Hmm. I do like hot fillings in a brioche...

Natsel84 · 16/09/2019 13:38

Wonder if she dipped the fish finger in tomato sauce ..

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 16/09/2019 13:44

natsel

I reckon she double dipped

Juells · 16/09/2019 13:47

I reckon she double dipped

She sounds like the type Hmm

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/09/2019 13:47

Then sneezed on the fish finger and put it back on someone else's plate, then took a clean one.

That must be it...

Not all dinner ladies are living the bream you know!

Astrid09 · 16/09/2019 14:04

The bit that I keep questioning is how in a hall of school teachers, kids queuing right next to each other that OP daughter was the ONLY ONE to see it. It sound a bit unrealistic.

FelicisNox · 16/09/2019 14:10

I see where you are coming from regarding Norovirus and when some of the people on this thread catch it they won't be laughing so hard.

You could send an email to the head that states;

It's come to my attention that certain members of the canteen staff/dinner lady team are helping themselves to the childrens lunches.

I do not have an issue with this per se as I do not consider that to be my business however, they were observed using their bare hands (no gloves) and due to the recent Norovirus outbreak I would appreciate it if you could look into this and ensure that going forward all members of staff are wearing the appropriate attire when handling food.

YANBU OP, it's a breach of health and hygiene and it requires rectifying.

As for the rest of you.... seriously? If your kids came home unwell because staff had been handling food incorrectly you'd be straight on here moaning. Get over yourselves.

KUGA · 16/09/2019 14:16

Ooooh wuddunyalike2 k now.
I would like to hope you are wrong, but I do see your point.
I wouldn`t give a flying f/finger if she ate more than one as long as the DC were not going hungry.
Good point though.

Raspberrytruffle · 16/09/2019 14:20

This has made me want a fish finger sandwich

wuddenyalike2know · 16/09/2019 14:23

@KUGA I think she should report it so she gets another kind of finger from the school Grin

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 16/09/2019 14:31

All the school is going to do is tell the dinner ladys to either make sure children can’t see them or wait til the children are back in class

Though once i did put a whole roast potato in my mouth and a little one asked me what I was eating...hopefully he didnt tell on me 🤔

ThatCurlyGirl · 16/09/2019 14:53

Disclaimer: I don't have kids yet so I appreciate I may not understand school issues as well as people who do

But

What would be reported in this instance? That she had a fish finger that would otherwise have been given to a kid?

The paperwork and time this would cause (though hopefully not too much) would be taking time away from the head dealing with actual problems and solutions surely?

Maybe it's because I'm not a parent yet but I cannot see myself even having much of a reaction to this let alone contemplating complaining!

If your child was eating their meal and she came over and nabbed it off their plate I would understand you being peeved. But what happened was so inconsequential that I feel like you must have underlying issues with the lunchtime supervisor.

Aside from anything else, giving this much headspace might be sending a message to your DD about perspective on mundane day to day events being dramatic.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 16/09/2019 15:01

That she had a fish finger that would otherwise have been given to a kid?

Not even this...they would make a few extra and some children may only want one or two

I know i harp on about the roast potatoes but towards the end of the shift one of the servers would come out and say there are some potatoes left if you want one...or two

ThatCurlyGirl · 16/09/2019 15:10

@RufusthebewiIderedreindeer

Blimey, I wish had time to worry about things like that. Glad I'm not mad and you and other people also think this level of headspace is mind boggling!

I really want some roasties now. I might head to the school down the road, volunteer and then nick some Wink

Girasole02 · 16/09/2019 15:16

To anyone wondering why school recruitment and retention is at an all time low......

Given the context of this thread, I think that would be quite shellfish.
