To ask if / what you are stockpiling for Brexit

DH thinks I’m a bit mad: but I stockpile most winters in case we have an awful
Winter. All of the food gets used though eventually.

I’ve stockpiled loo roll, kitchen roll, toothpaste, soap and washing powder.

A freezer full of meals (Mac cheese, bolognaise, various stews, soups and curries, apple crumble (we have apples from our apple trees needing used), 10kg pasta and rice, flour, tins of tomatoes, beans/lentils/chickpeas, tinned fruit and veg. Oh and some UHT milk

Am I missing anything? Are you stockpiling?

I also stockpiled before the last Brexit deadline (April) and didn’t need to cook again until end July as we lived off the precooked meals in the freezer: so it’s not getting wasted!

Anyone??

Toothpaste, toilet rolls, coffee whitener (!) pasta, sauce, rice. Oh and bold liquid for some reason I just can’t live without that smell on my clothes!

EileenAlanna · 12/09/2019 12:01

I've been gathering stuff up gradually for quite a long time. I've probably got enough now to last me about 6 months. I'll be adding more UHT milk & a few similar things over the coming weeks. I'll be stocking up on even more candles & oil for the lanterns after reading about the possible hike in electricity prices and/or potential shortages.
I don't have much in the freezer - it's just a half & half fridge freezer - but I've lots of tinned meats. I was thinking in terms of electricity going off & losing whatever I've frozen in a short time.

There’s a thread in the brexit section - maybe have a look there before this thread goes bun-fighty nothing about brexit on the main boards ever seems to go well

The government is saying to expect shortages. Yellowhammer. I wasn’t but I’m thinking of now...

Idontwanttotalk · 12/09/2019 12:11

FFS, not another thread on stockpiling for Brexit. Can't you just add your 2 cents to the other threads?

bellinisurge · 12/09/2019 12:11

Yawn yawn- stockpiling a few months ago isn't panic buying. But plenty of people will try and tell you it is.
Loads of threads on here about it.

AfterSchoolWorry · 12/09/2019 12:15

I'm in Ireland but I've started a small stockpile of bread mix as I believe 80% of flour used in Ireland comes from the UK.

Quite nervous about it here.

whyamidoingthis · 12/09/2019 12:19

@BloodyDisgrace - No. I don't stockpile anything. I am not a panic stricken moron.

Really? Do you have house insurance? Do you buy extra coming up to christmas in case you have unexpected visitors? If a serious storm is forecast, would you buy a bit extra in case deliveries to the supermarkets are delayed?

Personally, I think if you don't get a bit extra in you're being a bit shortsighted. However, I would not be so rude as to call you a moron for that.

Gingerbreadsonme · 12/09/2019 12:20

I’m not. What I want to be stockpiling is my husband’s lifesaving medication, but it doesn’t have a very long shelf-life so I can’t. Yay for Britain.

HappyHammy · 12/09/2019 12:20

Not stockpiling and waiting for the.revised yellowhammer report which is a worst.case scenario risk assessment

Drogosnextwife · 12/09/2019 12:21

Nothing yet but I feel as though I should be, I just don't know what to buy.

whyamidoingthis · 12/09/2019 12:21

Me too. I've had a look through my cupboards to see what comes from the UK or is likely to use the land bridge and I'm buying extras of those. Mind you, at least our government is giving us information about the potential impacts of no deal.

WhatsMyPassword · 12/09/2019 12:22

Apparently I have the best brexit cupboard - tinned pink gin (we dont drink) and pot noodles (we dont eat those either)

What I do really have stock piled is toilet rolls

bellinisurge · 12/09/2019 12:24

@Drogosnextwife , just start by getting a three day buffer of shelf stable/freezable versions of what you eat now. And hygiene stuff like toothpaste. Just so you don't need to go to the shops if things get bumpy locally.
Do more if you want to/can afford it/have the space. Don't do less.

WaggingKnife · 12/09/2019 12:24

Stockpiling is not panic buying, HTH the hard of thinking.

JacquesHammer · 12/09/2019 12:27

We’ll be doing the usual winter stockpile of bread/milk and then pasta, sauce jars etc. Will all get eaten anyway so no issue.

I’ve also been slowly stockpiling DD’s medication and through a GP error managed to stockpile an extra 6 months of mine (I did raise it with them, they told me to keep it).

whyamidoingthis · 12/09/2019 12:27

@Drogosnextwife - I feel as though I should be, I just don't know what to buy

Just buy stuff you would normally use. So if you're doing the shop, throw in an extra packet of pasta,, for example. Do it gradually and in a way that is budget friendly for you. I have pasta, rice, lentils, baked beans, porridge, flour, oil, tinned tomatoes, etc in mine. My mother has teabags, biscuits and tinned and packet stuff she normally uses.

I have a large, lidded plastic box in the garage as I don't really have space in the house but you could use a wardrobe or press somewhere in the house.

I always buy things like shampoo, soap, washing powder etc when they're on offer so would generally have a good supply of them in anyway.

Greatnorthwoods · 12/09/2019 12:35

We always have 4 months of food, and water at any one time. We also keep 30L of petrol, (rotated every 2 weeks to keep it fresh)

bellinisurge · 12/09/2019 12:41

@Greatnorthwoods , that's great but unrealistic and daunting for people who never have thought about it before.
For utter newbies, storing petrol is a very bad idea. Three days is an achievement start - think dawn till dusk. Think of everything you need including treats and any pets.

familycourtq · 12/09/2019 12:44

No.

ethelfleda · 12/09/2019 12:46

I’m on the fence about it OP.
I did order a load online from a supermarket but then cancelled it again because that bill went through parliament.
I think the thing that is most like to cause immediate shortages is people panic buying closer to the time. I’m not referring to people stockpiling now/previously.

Bottledate · 12/09/2019 12:47

I did it a bit - tinned toms, bogroll etc. the first time round and actually found it really useful to always have something available instead of ha big just run out. I've therefore altered my shopping habits to always replace the spare(s) and will continue whatever happens with Brexit
