DH thinks I’m a bit mad: but I stockpile most winters in case we have an awful
Winter. All of the food gets used though eventually.

I’ve stockpiled loo roll, kitchen roll, toothpaste, soap and washing powder.

A freezer full of meals (Mac cheese, bolognaise, various stews, soups and curries, apple crumble (we have apples from our apple trees needing used), 10kg pasta and rice, flour, tins of tomatoes, beans/lentils/chickpeas, tinned fruit and veg. Oh and some UHT milk

Am I missing anything? Are you stockpiling?

I'm stockpiling threads about stockpiling

fedup21 · 12/09/2019 15:04

We also keep 30L of petrol, (rotated every 2 weeks to keep it fresh)

How do you store/transport it? Isn’t it a pain?

burninglikefire · 12/09/2019 15:11

Tea, coffee, cat litter and cat food (in case I can't get the type of litter and food that the little beasties are used to!), toiletries, cleaning stuff. I don't use much tinned stuff otherwise I would stock up on this too.

I am basically just stocking up on non-perishables that I would buy anyway. That way, if there are shortages or queues, then I will be just a little bit less affected than otherwise.

Will also try and keep the car topped up with fuel if no deal by mid-October.

Butchyrestingface · 12/09/2019 15:13

Only pet food so far. I can starve but not my wee precious’. Blush

burninglikefire · 12/09/2019 15:14

Oh, just read some earlier posts - candles/matches are a good idea.

Biker47 · 12/09/2019 15:16

I'm stockpiling tinfoil, one hats worth only lasts about 3 hours, as it's resistance wears down over time, so you have to keep making new ones.

BeanBag7 · 12/09/2019 15:17

I always have a very full cupboards anyway but recently I have doubled up on things like fabric softener, loo roll, washing up liquid etc.
I also have filled up the freezer and have bought some extra tins and packets, bottles of oil and squash and a few cartons of UHT milk which are under the stairs just in case - all stuff we would use anyway.

bellinisurge · 12/09/2019 15:19

That's right @Biker47 and we all dreamed the Yellowhammer stuff.

Biker47 · 12/09/2019 15:30

Panic buying and unnecessary stockpiling fuels shortages more than actual problems, usually.

SherbetSaucer · 12/09/2019 15:32

I’m not bothering! I’ve decided to continue to live in denial.

Mammylamb · 12/09/2019 15:46

Panic buying, yes. Stockpiling in advance? No. If you buy little and often, then there is plenty left for everyone else

We also keep 30L of petrol, (rotated every 2 weeks to keep it fresh) where do you keep it, sounds like a fire hazard to me

Stockpiling in advance isn't panic buying.

Stockpiling fuel is very dangerous!

ChocChocButtons · 12/09/2019 16:07

Common sense mainly.

MadamDeMorency · 12/09/2019 16:26

Like you OP I start filling our walk in pantry with extra for the winter, and I use a lot more tinned stuff than in the summer.

I have been adding extra tomatoes, pulses, rice, peanut butter, tinned meat & fish, sweetcorn, spinach, roasted peppers. Also loo rolls, toothpaste.

It will all get used regardless.

JacquesHammer · 12/09/2019 16:49

Panic buying

Do get your terms sorted out. Stockpiling isn’t “panic buying”. It’s quite the opposite.

I stockpile every year. I live semi-rurally so ensure the larder has enough to take me and DD through snow days. It all gets eaten whether needed for original purpose or not.

lpchill · 12/09/2019 16:52

I'm just treating it like Christmas in that I don't want to go shopping for any essentials during the week over Christmas.

I stock up on all essentials like pasta, tea bags, coffee, sugar etc. I've stocked up on other bits like stuffing mix, oxo cubes, washing powder, cleaning stuff. So by the time I use it I'll have a full container of what I'm using and an extra or two (depending on how quick I get through it. Freezer is full of meat (which i do anyway stocking up when on offer) I've also started on butters (but will buy the bulk of it when it goes on sale) loo roll we have masses always (DH has IBS) only thing I have brought extra is a few UHT milk which would last us a few weeks as only DD uses it for breakfasts.
We have stocked up on medicine as DH is having massive issues getting medication for his IBS (they stopped making it until May 2020) so I'm glad I stocked up when we did and will do when we find a suitable alternative hopefully. Got DD an extra inhaler for her croup (as don't want to have to go up to AandE) and my medication as I will be in agony if I can't get ahold of it (lifetime so it will get used)

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/09/2019 16:55

I'm not stockpiling anything apart from toothpaste and Calpol. There are no food items that I can't live without for a short time if the worst happens.

bellinisurge · 12/09/2019 16:56

But do really want to be anywhere near the shops to "make do with what's there " if it is kicking off.

Tableclothing · 12/09/2019 16:57

I've stockpiled long life items that we use on a regular basis (just get 2 of each thing so we getting them in the proportion we use them). I don't normally bother with frozen meat but I will in the fairly near future, also some frozen herbs and will look at other preserved fruits / veg. I'm currently pregnant so have bought all the vitamins I intend to take already. Will also be looking to get baby stuff in a bit earlier than I otherwise might, plus some of the 'luxuries*' that I really like which are gong to get significantly more expensive. I'm trying very hard to not but anything that won't get used anyway.

As the objective of the stockpiling is to keep the family healthy in the event of not being able to shop, I've also got in hygiene stuff like bin bags, washing up liquid, toothpaste & brushes.

*wine + other booze for after baby, chocolate, that sort of thing.

bengalcat · 12/09/2019 16:58

HRT , Cat and Dog biscuits

Tableclothing · 12/09/2019 16:59

DH thought I was mad at first, but I explained why it won't cost us anything extra (and will save us money if/when prices rise) and then he read the Yellowhammer documents and added a few ideas of his own.

JacquesHammer · 12/09/2019 17:02

A really evil part of me wants to observe...

lostelephant · 12/09/2019 17:04

I would love to stockpile but struggle to fit all of our shopping in the flat as it is. I can't think of where to put it out of sight.

TooTrueToBeGood · 12/09/2019 17:06

I'm stockpiling anal lube. When we crash out and it finally dawns on people how buggered we are I'll make a fortune.
