To ask if / what you are stockpiling for Brexit

DH thinks I’m a bit mad: but I stockpile most winters in case we have an awful
Winter. All of the food gets used though eventually.

I’ve stockpiled loo roll, kitchen roll, toothpaste, soap and washing powder.

A freezer full of meals (Mac cheese, bolognaise, various stews, soups and curries, apple crumble (we have apples from our apple trees needing used), 10kg pasta and rice, flour, tins of tomatoes, beans/lentils/chickpeas, tinned fruit and veg. Oh and some UHT milk

Am I missing anything? Are you stockpiling?

@DavetheCat2001 , the point of getting a buffer of food in is so that you can look at the situation in your area a bit more calmly. Without the urgency of needing food and going to the shops.
I'm a general prepper so I can manage for a while. That's a personal choice I made and not for everyone. However, everyone can get a small buffer in.
3 days is the standard recommended in many countries as a basic.

bengalcat · 18/09/2019 17:14

Had to laugh today when partner said I’ve been thinking about brexit etc and I think we should stock up ........ on French wine ! Lol wtf ! I was anticipating him mentioning his favourite food stuffs etc

Snugglepumpkin · 18/09/2019 18:50

@DavetheCat2001
You spend those 3 days or however long doing what everyone else who hasn't got a buffer is doing but with a clearer mind.
Seeking food etc... for a longer period of time but without the urgency of needing to eat it today or have nothing.

You also have a buffer of food you actually would choose to eat, rather than what is left on the shelves even though you don't like that.

The more of a buffer you have, the less stress you have about that part of your life.
If you've ever been genuinely hungry, you'll know that it is not an easy thing to be.
The less immediate the stress on what you are going to feed your hungry kids tonight, the better the decisions you will make.

3 days is generally suggested as a target to start with because trying to get something like a six month store would be overwhelming.
Ideally those who began with 3 days will have built it up to at least a week or better yet a month.
Maybe not for everything, but even if they've covered a meal a day for that time, it takes the pressure off & gives you time to adapt to whatever the new circumstances you find yourself in.

Anything is always going to be better than nothing.

Evilmorty · 18/09/2019 19:14

if it all goes tits up, what happens when your stockpile runs out??

Same thing that happens when a non preppers food runs out... hunger! Except we’ll have a month or so of being comfortable and to figure out what we are doing, by which time the situation may be resolved. No bother for us. If you’ve enough food for a month, there’s more leeway (before the need to start poaching and roasting wild rabbit for dinner and wiping our bums with rags.) Grin

Ohflippineck · 18/09/2019 19:32

DavetheCat*We’re ok for over 3 months. If the problems persist thereafter, we’re all well and truly fucked anyway.

Gatepost1820 · 18/09/2019 19:54

Iceland has 3 bags of frozen fish for £10 so I bought 3 bags on the way home. Will get another 3 bags tomorrow on my way home from work.

purplepoop · 18/09/2019 19:55

What the fuck is this shit? Stockpiling for what?

I have enough food for the month, like i have each month as i buy for the month.

Then cone winter i have bread and milk as i do get snowbound.

Otherwise no. If I haven’t got it, well there it is.

They got through the war on minimal stuff.

Gatepost1820 · 18/09/2019 20:00

They got through the war with minimal stuff with a significantly smaller population and not so many declared allergies and other issues. So not comparable to today.

MaudesMum · 18/09/2019 20:12

I'm focussing on things that come in from Europe and aren't going to be a priority to get into the country, so lots of tinned tomatoes, tinned beans of various sorts, extra parmesan, and coffee beans. I'll buy extra quantities of parma ham and similar from Lidl in the next couple of weeks, and also build my wine, gin and tonic stocks. I normally buy meat, cheese and eggs locally, so that should be ok. My main worry is fresh vegetables, as I eat loads, and so many of them come from abroad in the autumn, so I will squeeze some more frozen ones into the freezer as well. And perhaps join a local box scheme for the slightly overpriced organic ones...

Evilmorty · 18/09/2019 20:13

WTF is this shit?

It’s just other people’s food, there’s no need to freak out. Why do people get so sweary about other people’s shopping 😂

DavetheCat2001 · 18/09/2019 20:16

😬 I have been trying to buy the odd extra tin/ pack of cereal etc when I shop.. I guess living in London I've never really had to think about getting cut-off/snowed in etc

All a bit worrying.. fuck Brexit 🖕

Evilmorty · 18/09/2019 20:16

It’s like my 12 tins of baked beans have personally insulted some posters.

Tins of carrots? Arseholes.
Five bean salad? Bastards.
Tomato purée with garlic? Fucking GARLIC? Fuck off.

SilentNightTime · 18/09/2019 20:22

Haha yeah like the local farm shops will cope with being overrun by the people who usually buy from the supermarket. They will be empty as well!

CactusAndCacti · 18/09/2019 20:30

Tomato purée with garlic? Fucking GARLIC? Fuck off.

Well with garlic, they may well have a point.

I need to do a stock check of what I actually have and what I still need to get.

My biggest concern is milk as autistic ds has a lot of milk.

bellinisurge · 18/09/2019 20:39

@CactusAndCacti would your son have Nido full fat powdered milk - could you "road test " it. Make up a batch and see how it goes.
I appreciate that may be useless advice.

Outsomnia · 18/09/2019 20:42

Alcohol. And drugs.

We will need both if we exit with No Deal.

Food can wait. But the freezer is stocked anyway.

millimollimandi · 18/09/2019 20:45

Coffee Tea and bread mixes/flour. We make our own bread and we can't live without coffee and tea. Other stuff too but no real plan to that, but would struggle without coffee tea and bread. Oh and we have a large freezer with a couple of whole animals in there. I also have enough fat on me to last me a good few weeks of starvation rations. I knew it was worth putting off the diet...

CactusAndCacti · 18/09/2019 20:48

Thanks bell I could try. I do mean to try some uht but he would probably see straight through it. His diet is so limited as it is, I am too scared to do anything that might rock the boat.

mybigbotty · 18/09/2019 20:52

all the usual dried stuff and bullion ;-)

StCharlotte · 18/09/2019 20:53

Everytime I buy another bulk load of loo roll, they extend the date. I'm ashamed to say I might fill the car up as I'm driving coast to coast on 1st November.

StCharlotte · 18/09/2019 20:57

A freezer full of meals

But what if there's no electricity??? ShockGrin

WalkAwaySugarbear · 18/09/2019 21:04

I think I'm a prepper without realising it, I've inherited it from Mum who always had a spare item and replace once you're using the spare. I shop at Costco so have a years supply of washing powder, loo rolls and tea bags however I have always done this as it's easier than buying every month. I have UHT for when we run out of milk and a full freezer.
So not stockpiling specifically for Brexit but I usually have a fair stash all year round.

bellinisurge · 18/09/2019 21:26

@StCharlotte , that's why you don't put your eggs in one basket and have tins.
Or, if you are a general prepper like me, other ways of preserving food including growing your own.
But , as electricity is only likely to be affected in terms of price rather than supply with Brexit, it's your call.

Evilmorty · 18/09/2019 22:01

StCharlotte anyone seasoned enough to prep, obviously has a camping stove Grin
