To ask if / what you are stockpiling for Brexit

DH thinks I’m a bit mad: but I stockpile most winters in case we have an awful
Winter. All of the food gets used though eventually.

I’ve stockpiled loo roll, kitchen roll, toothpaste, soap and washing powder.

A freezer full of meals (Mac cheese, bolognaise, various stews, soups and curries, apple crumble (we have apples from our apple trees needing used), 10kg pasta and rice, flour, tins of tomatoes, beans/lentils/chickpeas, tinned fruit and veg. Oh and some UHT milk

Am I missing anything? Are you stockpiling?

What if the supermarkets are full of grumpy wankers and have limited food?

Maryann1975 · 12/09/2019 20:45

Freezer is full, tinned bit of cupboard is full. I need to do the jars and baking (So flour and sugar) bit. I actually have no idea what might be caught up in shortages though, so no real idea what I should be stocking up on? (Dh was quite concerned to see 6 tins of mushy peas in the cupboard so I think maybe my stockpiling has got a bit confused!

I did stock up a bit for the last deadline and we have since eaten all that, so I don’t see it as wasting, more of buying in advance.

ChristmasFluff · 12/09/2019 20:49

I am prepared for a zombie apocalypse rather than Brexit, so I have various swords and a couple of crossbows.

Your freezer meals will be mine.

derxa · 12/09/2019 20:49

I'll check into a hotel

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/09/2019 20:50

@bellinisurge my local supermarket is already like that to be honest Grin

StitchingMoss · 12/09/2019 20:52

Not stockpiling but just taking note if anyone I know who’s admitted to voting Leave.

If we have food shortages I’ll be breaking into their houses and stealing their food because all this is their fucking fault.

arethereanyleftatall · 12/09/2019 20:53

Nothing.

DelurkingAJ · 12/09/2019 20:57

Like others...enough to avoid the shops for a few weeks...of things that won’t spoil. I’ll be utterly delighted if it’s unnecessary but I’d rather not fret.

With just in time ordering at major supermarkets anyone buying now will have zero effect on what happens when we leave. Or might even reduce shortages by not needing stuff. Conscious clear.

Rainbunny · 12/09/2019 21:04

Wine! Grin I'm actually serious on this one, apparently wine is one of the specified items that will be in short supply.

Other than that I've been slowly building up my supplies of toilet roll, kitchen roll, lentils, pasta, canned tuna, baked beans, canned & dry beans and some other boring staples. Obvs wine will be very important if we are going to spend a few weeks eating said boring staples!

SunnySomer · 12/09/2019 21:05

I love the notion that if a supermarket can’t stock its shelves, then a restaurant surely can!
Just like Julia Hartley-Brewer wittering on about blueberries.

amy85 · 12/09/2019 21:44

Ummm nah....I'm barely organised enough to buy stuff for the week ahead there's no chance of me stock piling

CherryPlum · 12/09/2019 22:16

I've been eating lots of biscuits recently, so I guess I'm stockpiling via my body. I'll survive off my fat reserves 😂

Davros · 12/09/2019 23:01

The Savoy will always be fully supplied as it was during WWII. I'll pop there

Happyspud · 12/09/2019 23:02

I’m getting a few extra calpols and neurofen son. And filling my oil tank and gas tanks.

BirthdayDreamer · 12/09/2019 23:09

I'll probably buy in extra toilet roll and UHT milk as being without toilet roll and milk would seriously annoy me but beyond that, I'm not so bothered. It would go to rations if supplies got bad and TBH people survived the five years of war and quite a few years after on rations, it was inconvenient but nobody actually starved on them. No we wouldn't have all our home comforts on rations but as long as there was something to live on (maybe not our favourites) and we didn't starve then it's do-able. I mean how much room does anyone have to stockpile? A few weeks worth of extras maybe, but if you think of how many shopping bags of food and supplies you bring into the house of a normal average week, (say an average of 3 large bags-for-life, including bulkier items like bin bags and pasta and toilet roll and cat food and so on) could you find the space to store 4, 6, 8, 10 weeks or more of food and supplies? At some point it's going to run out. 10 weeks of an average food shop of 3 bags for life - ie 33 full bags for life worth of supplies - would fill a large space in our house!

venusandmars · 12/09/2019 23:25

Petrol, toilet roll and co-codamol (for migraine). Everything we can manage with alternatives.

But we do have more tinned tuna, sardines, tomatoes, kidney beans, and the freezer is full of spinach, broccoli, peas...

Nottrueatall · 12/09/2019 23:28

I have around 100 bottles of various alcohol stashed away, so I'll be past caring what's happening. WineGin Grin

dowehaveastalker · 12/09/2019 23:33

I have loo roll. And uht milk. My kids drink gallons of milk so basically, if the zombie apocalypse comes, we will be fine for going to the loo and staying hydrated with milk 😂

dowehaveastalker · 12/09/2019 23:34

Sorry. And booze. I have loads of booze. Mulled wine included. 😂🍷

CactusAndCacti · 12/09/2019 23:35

I am just filling my cupboards, so not stockpiling as such but making sure we have a bit extra in.

My next plan is to make sure I have a well stocked baking cupboard and that I have enough cleaning products etc.

CactusAndCacti · 12/09/2019 23:37

I don't drink so no booze stashes. Though this may make me turn to the drink.

I think l have quite a dilemma on my hands.

Evilmorty · 12/09/2019 23:57

I’ve been stockpiling for ages, I always do anyway just in case.

I’ve said before, it’s all well and good saying you’ll be happy to eat what’s left on the shelves but I grew up in a neglectful household - when you’ve eaten a birds trifle and sandwich paste for breakfast, you’ll go to any lengths to avoid it! Grin

NewtonPulsifer · 13/09/2019 01:24

If you haven’t got one already, a solar phone charger is a good idea in case of power cuts.

lostelephant · 13/09/2019 09:25

@bellinisurge top of wardrobe, under bed, behind bath panel. Seriously.

Fitted wardrobes with no shelves, solid bed base and a non-removable bath panel. But thank you for trying to be a smart-arse. Flowers

whyamidoingthis · 13/09/2019 09:38

@lostelephant - Fitted wardrobes with no shelves, solid bed base and a non-removable bath panel. But thank you for trying to be a smart-arse.

they are perfectly reasonable places to store stuff that people often don't think of so no harm in suggesting them.

The floor of a wardrobe is also an option if you're neater than me. Mine is full of shoes.
