To ask how long your commute to work is?

Currently my trip to work is 1 hour door to door each way. I’ve got used to it and quite enjoy the alone time, particularly as it’s broken up with driving to train station, short train journey and then a walk to the office. Been offered a big opportunity in the city with a significant pay increase to match. Commute would be up to 2 hours each way door to door. Possibly a bit mad for even considering it?!

I’m interested...how long is your commute to work each day and for those who have or previously had a fairly long commute, how do you find it?!

About 5 seconds as I work from home, dh drives 45-60 minutes depending on traffic and hates it, I always think it's 2 hours unpaid overtime per day for him.

JonSnowsCloak · 09/09/2019 21:50

15-20 mins each way d2d. I couldn't do 2 hours each way, is there scope to work from home so many days?

TheRLodger · 09/09/2019 21:51

Between 5-7 minutes one of the better things about my job. 30 minute walk. 99% to drive Blush due to my role and i tend to go to shops or go on to do something else after work.

ilovepixie · 09/09/2019 21:53

5 minute car drive or 20 min walk.

SallyOMalley · 09/09/2019 21:56

Currently a 12min cycle ride. The longest commute I've had is 90mins train / walking at each end, and the shortest is 5 minutes on foot. Sadly, that commute only lasted 4 months before we moved again.

DragonforaMIL · 09/09/2019 21:58

My office moved and the commute went from 1 hour door to door each way, to nearly 2 hours each way. I went home working after 2 years as I couldn't face the awful travelling any more and never saw dcs. Good luck if you do take it!

LocksMyth · 09/09/2019 22:02

90min cycle each way.
I'm knackered.

NanooCov · 09/09/2019 22:03

An hour. 15 minute walk each end and half hour on train. No way could I do two hours. I'd never see my kids for a start.

Seren85 · 09/09/2019 22:09

45 minutes D2D. 22 minutes on the train with a walk either side. I also WFH two days a week.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 09/09/2019 22:11

10 min drive or 1 hr 45 minute public transport

Animum2 · 09/09/2019 22:12

45 mins on bus

MordredsOrrery · 09/09/2019 22:29

2.5h d2d. I WFH the majority of the week.

Bunnybigears · 09/09/2019 22:31

5 to 10 minute drive depending on the traffic, about 30 mins walk if it's a nice day.

Shoxfordian · 09/09/2019 22:32

1hr 45ish but only 3 days a week, work from home 2 days

I don't mind it. I usually listen to a podcast or read a book plus have a coffee on the train.

fromthefloorboardsup · 09/09/2019 22:32

Mine's now 15 minutes each way but the most I've done is 90 mins each way and that was horrendous. I was exhausted!

PookieDo · 09/09/2019 22:33

Mine was 1 hour + each way
New job - it’s 7 miles away and 2 days WFH. I love it

Seahawk80 · 09/09/2019 22:35

Mine is a 35min cycle (40 on way home due to hill!) Or 10 min train and 1 stop on tube with 15 mins walking. I wouldn't do it. I used to do 1hr 15 mins and even that was bad. Mind you it was across London and was always galling to be paying a huge mortgage to live in zone 2 - just about and have a long commute!

Wehttam · 09/09/2019 22:40

7 minute walk. No way in hell would I waste my time commuting to work. The thought of losing precious hours in travel makes me nauseous. I wander around the shops after work then nip in M&S then back home in another 7 mins. Bliss.

justjuggling · 09/09/2019 22:50

1.5 - 2 hours. I drive it, traffic was bliss during the school summer hols! It gets me down a bit but I love my job so it’s a necessary evil!

Tippety · 09/09/2019 22:55

I had a 2 hour commute for a few months, it was horrendois and unsustainable; especially if 2 hours is your 'best case scenario' and could take longer quite regularly. My dream is to find a job within walking distance even if it's half an hour or so, i hate travelling to work, and at least I wouldn't have to worry about the gym then!

itsabongthing · 20/09/2019 09:38

30 mins drive.

2 hours would be too long for me but that’s what dh does.

For me it’s because of my caring responsibilities at home and childcare. If it was just about me I’d be looking at it completely differently.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 20/09/2019 10:09

My current commute is a 15 min drive. Bliss!

My longest commute was just over 2hrs each way and I absolutely hated it but I was working 13 hour shifts at the time so that didn't help. I did it for two years and I was permanently nackered. Most of my jobs have been 40 mins to an hour each way which is fairly standard I think.

DH has a 1.5 hour (each way) commute to his office but he only has to do this two days a week, the rest of the time he works from home so he doesn't mind it. He uses the time to listen to audiobooks and has said he finds the drive quite relaxing.

InOtterNews · 20/09/2019 12:36

Nearly 2 hours each way. Walk, train, the tube then DLR. I try to work at home at least once a week to mitigate as it can be quite knackering.

However, yesterday I took my boss to look at new office space and she's okayed a relocation which hopefully will cut my commute to 1 hour door-to-door each way

justbeingadad · 20/09/2019 13:02

I do about 2.5 hours door to door and have been doing it for 3 weeks and I'm a bit sick of it...BUT I do this on a Tuesday morning and come back Thursday night. So I'm essentially commuting once a week and I find it draining. My commute is very pain-free as well. 7:15am taxi, 8am train, in the office for 9:45 and then 5pm train and get home about 7/7:15 depending on traffic / taxis. I am lucky I can expense this, if I couldn't I would be looking at an additional 45 mins each way for public transport. I don't see how it could be sustainable on a daily basis?

xyzandabc · 20/09/2019 13:06

An hour walk, 20 min cycle or 5-10 min drive. Unfortunately I have to drive as I drop 1dc at the bus stop on the way to work and pick another 2 DC up on the way home. I used to cycle but logistically it just doesn't work anymore.
