To ask how long your commute to work is?

Currently my trip to work is 1 hour door to door each way. I’ve got used to it and quite enjoy the alone time, particularly as it’s broken up with driving to train station, short train journey and then a walk to the office. Been offered a big opportunity in the city with a significant pay increase to match. Commute would be up to 2 hours each way door to door. Possibly a bit mad for even considering it?!

I’m interested...how long is your commute to work each day and for those who have or previously had a fairly long commute, how do you find it?!

3 hours door to door. I work in London but live in the West Country.

It’s fine. It seems stupidly long but I’ve done it for a long time and it seems normal to me now. I only work in the office 3 days a week though. I get a lot of work done on the train, so I still get plenty of time with my dc and I have Fridays off. It means dh gets lots of time with them on the days I’m commuting too.

Egghead68 · 09/09/2019 18:44

Used to be minimum 90 mins each way. Now 9 mins!

MamaFlintstone · 09/09/2019 18:46

20 minutes door to door via metro. DH does approx 1 hour each way and even that’s too much, he regularly doesn’t see DD at all because he has to leave before she’s got up and doesn’t get back till she’s gone to bed. If it was still just me and him it wouldn’t be a problem. 2 hours would be too much though.

soberfabulous · 09/09/2019 18:47

30 mins each way. That's 20 hours a month in the car. I listen to podcasts so I see it as a real pleasure. 2 hours each way is insanity though!

Loopytiles · 09/09/2019 18:47

How much more pay?

I do 75 - 90 mins each way, of which 30 is walking. Think this is detrimental to quality of life and wouldn’t want to increase this further.

Parky04 · 09/09/2019 18:53

30 minute cycle ride along the towpath. Unfortunately a more boring route when it gets dark.

WindsorDuchess · 09/09/2019 18:54

20 minute walk March - October because I can cut through a park. 45 minutes November - February because the park closes before I finish.

5 minute drive if I need to take the car I've to take it some days as I've to venture out to different locations sometimes up to an hours drive away, but during the summer if I need it I just walk back to the house to pick the car up and drive to the location from home.

homertonb · 09/09/2019 18:57

1 hr 10 mins dtd

OneStepOneStumble · 09/09/2019 18:58

1 hour 10 mins but I walk (the buses take the same time or longer with traffic so I prefer the exercise!). Used to do an hour and a half train and it wore on me after a while with full time work!

Kitty1184 · 09/09/2019 18:59

90 mins door to door.

Agree with PP's - that extra 30 minutes is the worst.

BringOnTheScience · 09/09/2019 18:59

Anything from 20 mins to 1 hour 40mins is the current record. I drive just 7 miles. Gotta LOVE the A14 'improvement ' scheme. AngrySadAngry

Ohdeargodwot · 09/09/2019 19:00

I've commuted up to 4hrs each way before (nearly killed me).

Currently its a 50minute drive without any hiccups but i like to arrive early and assume poor traffic so will actually leave 1hr15/30in advance to be sure. Its a bit shit, i hopd to move closer in a couple of years.

Chasingsquirrels · 09/09/2019 19:01

Usually 30 mins, this morning 1hr 15 mins.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/09/2019 19:01

Car, 15mins. Public transport 45mins. I use the car for 6 trips and public transport for 4.

Chitarra · 09/09/2019 19:02

35-50 mins depending on the traffic.

DH's is 1hr 15. That seems to be ok for him but 2 hours sounds bad!

bruffin · 09/09/2019 19:06

10 minute walk
20 minute train
20 minute tube
5 minute walk

Nice day i get off a stop early and have a nice walk though green park and past Buckingham Palace, takes about 20 minutes so just get in on time.

MisterT373 · 09/09/2019 19:07

About 1hr 40 in ans 90 minutes on the way back.

When the service is running- this morning trains cancelled so left home at 740 and got into work at 1005.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 09/09/2019 19:07

Currently 15 minutes including a walk to the bus stop. I've worked in the City which was an hour and a half each way; also Greater London which could be up to two and a half hours if the weather/trains were cancelled or delayed. I wouldn't go back to that commute, regardless of money.

Crunchymum · 09/09/2019 19:09

Did an hours commute each way for a decade. Now it's a 30 minute walk (no direct transport so it's a walk in all weathers). 40 mins if I'm doing the school run first which I do most school days.

Yeahnahyeah1 · 09/09/2019 19:10

About half an hour, slightly more on market day when there’s lots of slow tractors! We’re very rural. I leave at 8:20 to start at 9:00.
Two hours, to me, is absolutely bonkers.

Iamafanoffans · 09/09/2019 19:11

Now, 1hr15 door to door. One reliable train and a nice walk the other end, and I work from home at least once a week.

One of my previous jobs was 2hrs each way, a combination of walk, bus, tube, tube, DLR, walk. Was a nightmare. Each bit of the journey ran the risk of delays and cancellations.

I wouldn’t not want to work in London so put up with the commute. I don’t mind it, I get a lot of reading done!

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 09/09/2019 19:12

I work from home, so less than a minute. The downside is that I never really leave work!

Ithinkmycatisevil · 09/09/2019 19:12

15-20 minutes. 10 minute drive (if I drive straight there, but usually do school run on the way). The a 5-10 minute walk from where I park the car. DP has a 40 minute commute, but it wouldn’t be worth it for what I earn.

athenagoddessofwar · 09/09/2019 19:14

20 to 25 minutes. Previously an hour. Taking this job and reducing commuting time (which was often significantly longer if there were bridge delays, accidents etc) was a major plus

Iamafanoffans · 09/09/2019 19:15

A colleague recently moved house. His new commute was supposed to be 2 hrs each way, which he decided was worth it for a bigger house. About 3 months after he moved the bus company he relies on changed timetables, he now has an extra 40 mins on his return journey, so 2 hrs 40 to get home. Nightmare!
