To ask how long your commute to work is?

Currently my trip to work is 1 hour door to door each way. I’ve got used to it and quite enjoy the alone time, particularly as it’s broken up with driving to train station, short train journey and then a walk to the office. Been offered a big opportunity in the city with a significant pay increase to match. Commute would be up to 2 hours each way door to door. Possibly a bit mad for even considering it?!

I’m interested...how long is your commute to work each day and for those who have or previously had a fairly long commute, how do you find it?!

10mins on a good day, 30mins on a bad day. Dh does an hour each way. If there is a crash it takes 2hours. It would kill him doing that both ways, voluntarily.

lboogy · 09/09/2019 18:13

1 hr 10 d2d, includes 20 m walk to tube station.

DragonNoodleCake · 09/09/2019 18:13

It's about 45-50 minutes from the car share meeting point (7 minutes to get there) I drive myself 1 day a week. I prefer car share days as my fellow carshare peeps are funny and good company, we have all sorts of crazy rants, conversations and musical entertainment 😀

Sparklesocks · 09/09/2019 18:14

Mine is 50 mins to 1 hour door to door which works well for me. I left a job earlier this year which was about 1 hr 20 DTD which was fine too. It’s obviously dependent on the individual but I’d really struggle with 2 hours - it’s 4 hours a day which is half a work day.
I think id consider it if I was part time or could work from home a couple of days a week, but would struggle full time.

Stravapalava · 09/09/2019 18:14

15 mins door to door in the car. If I'm on early shifts, I'll cycle or run.

itsboiledeggsagain · 09/09/2019 18:15

Mien is the same as yours. I wouldn't mien a bit longer on the train if it was a bit less faffy

JumpyLiz · 09/09/2019 18:15

8 mins by car.

Commute to a city once a fortnight, which takes me about 1 and a half hours, mostly motorway. I never fail to think how glad I am that I don’t have to do it daily.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 09/09/2019 18:16

Either 5 seconds or up to 5 hours... I work field based so its either from home or national travel. I quite like the contrast!

crazycatgal · 09/09/2019 18:16

4 minutes door to door in the car. I'm a teacher and take home at least one set of 30 books before people berate me.

DownstairsMixUp · 09/09/2019 18:16

30-35 mins to go 8 miles. I don't get a parking space either. I work from home 2 days a week, if manager made me come in every day I'd look for a new job. It's all 40/50/60mph roads it's just full of shitty drivers and traffic.

honeyloops · 09/09/2019 18:17

An hour each way. Used to be 2 to 2.5 hours (although not every day). That was horrific, but it was more down to the fact it was via a bit of motorway that's windy, full of crashes, permanently full of traffic and blessed by some of the worst driving I've ever seen... If it'd been a 'nicer' motorway I don't think I'd have minded as much.

fiorentina · 09/09/2019 18:17

Just over 90 mins each way. Although I travel to another city once a week and that’s 2.5 hours each way. For a good job with the pay to match I don’t think 2 hours is awful if you can work from home regularly too and have support at home?

Teddybear45 · 09/09/2019 18:17

Hour and a half each way. Closer to 2 hours each way door to door. Train commute so it’s fairly chilled out

Symptomless · 09/09/2019 18:17

90 mins d2d, each way. It's doable, and I'd consider 2 hours as well for the right opportunity.

LBOCS2 · 09/09/2019 18:18

About an hour, D2D. Pretty standard London commute.

SistersOfMerci · 09/09/2019 18:18

An hour by bus with a ten minute walk to and from the bus stop from home. One minute walk to and from bus stop at work. It's traffic in rush hour that drags mine out.

WhyBirdStop · 09/09/2019 18:19

National role anywhere between 45 minutes to five-six hours. When I was locally based 45 minutes on a good day, up to 2 hours at least once a week. I hated the unpredictability though, it was driving and traffic related. I could do the same commute by train with less stress

RezCowgirl · 09/09/2019 18:19

Today it's 25 mins on the bike. As of next week it will be nothing as my new job is working from home.

lljkk · 09/09/2019 18:20

I would never commit to minimum 2 hrs each way on a regular basis.

My actual commutes are anywhere betw. 35 & 100 minutes, depending on mode(s) of transport. Typically about 70 minutes, part cycle & train.

Can you commute by train, and read or work on train, catch up with correspondance, research for home decisions, bill paying for instance. Making that 2 hours somehow productive is ONLY way I could imagine finding it acceptable.

Thesunrising · 09/09/2019 18:20

45 minute cycle - roughly 6 miles. Bus takes closer to 90 mins for same journey which I occasionally take if I’m feeling a bit under the weather. That’s is absolutely the upper limit of how long I am prepared to commute for.

Lazypuppy · 09/09/2019 18:21

10 mins door to door.

I changed jobs to be closer to home

reluctantbrit · 09/09/2019 18:22

1hour15 minutes door to door. 2 hours would kill me as I wouldn’t see DD at all in the morning and hardly in the evening.

With DH travelling quite a bit totally undoable

WrongKindOfFace · 09/09/2019 18:23

Anywhere to 15 mins (school holidays, no traffic) to over an hour (doing the school run in rush hour.)

Two hours each way will be awful. Don’t do it.

DitheringBlidiot · 09/09/2019 18:23

About 45 minutes door to door. 10 minute cycle to station, 20 minute train and about a 7 minute walk to my office. No way could I do 2 hours each way, that makes an 8 hour day a 12 hour one instantly

Buunylover · 09/09/2019 18:24

20 mins if I get a lift, well over an hour if I'm on public transport, beggars belief !
