To ask how long your commute to work is?

Currently my trip to work is 1 hour door to door each way. I’ve got used to it and quite enjoy the alone time, particularly as it’s broken up with driving to train station, short train journey and then a walk to the office. Been offered a big opportunity in the city with a significant pay increase to match. Commute would be up to 2 hours each way door to door. Possibly a bit mad for even considering it?!

I’m interested...how long is your commute to work each day and for those who have or previously had a fairly long commute, how do you find it?!

10secs from front door (will have either been to gym or walking dog) to my desk. I wfh.

I have had a 1.5hr commute in the past and enjoyed that as well - I used to love listening to audio books on my commute. Now I do it on my dog walks.

EnolaAlone · 09/09/2019 18:25

45 minutes door to door. It's 20 minutes on the train and a short walk either side, so it feels quite quick.

Purplepeonies · 09/09/2019 18:25

90 mins door to door. I hate it but I like the job and suits for now.

TipseyTorvey · 09/09/2019 18:26

Pre kids I had 2 hours each way without too much trouble. Post kids it was 45 mins, but have recently and deliberately taken a lower paid lower level job to lessen the commute to 12 mins drive. It's such a relief.

Jimmers · 09/09/2019 18:27

1hr 15mins in morning, up to 2hrs home depending on time I leave/traffic. That includes waiting for 2 buses. Not so bad now my son’s 17 & can look after himself

Aflorable · 09/09/2019 18:28

2.5-3 hours each way

purplepoop · 09/09/2019 18:28

5 minutes in the car.

LunarSea · 09/09/2019 18:30

About 10 seconds across the landing from bedroom to office. A little more if I go via the kitchen for coffee.

EC22 · 09/09/2019 18:30

25 mins in summer, 40 mins in winter. I think any more than an hour would be rules out by me.

Ronnie27 · 09/09/2019 18:30

30 mins drive, about 16 miles each way?

dollydaydream114 · 09/09/2019 18:34

30 minutes door to door, for me. I live in Manchester so I get the tram.

I think my longest commute was when I was living in Herts and working in Muswell Hill. It was a train, a Tube, a bus and then a 20 minute walk - about 90 minutes in total on a good day.

Alarae · 09/09/2019 18:34

Approximately 10 minutes either by car or bicycle. Love it.

Previous commute was an hour in normal traffic. Do not miss it.

WrongKindOfFace · 09/09/2019 18:35

Actually the 15 mins is opptomistic. It’s probably more like 25 on a very good day. ,

PanamaPattie · 09/09/2019 18:38

20 minutes door to door - if I don't get stuck behind a tractor.

JustMe9 · 09/09/2019 18:38

15min by car. I used to do 1.5hour to a different job by train+walking and I hated it! So if youre thibking about wasting 4 hours a day commuting thats 20hours a week! you may as well do another part time job from home for extra money! I would never waste such a long time for commuting!.

nespressowoo · 09/09/2019 18:38

30-40 mins. Just right.

Longdistance · 09/09/2019 18:40

20 minutes if that. Love that I can sometimes pop home for lunch, get a delivery, run an errand.

BossAssBitch · 09/09/2019 18:40

90 minutes.

It’s fine! I drive through lovely empty country lanes for 15 minutes before I get on the train and work for an hour or read or watch a box set that my DH isn’t interested in watching with me.

Then I walk over the bridge and I’m at my desk in the City. I love my job and love working in London. I also love rural living so I am prepared to make the compromise of a longer commute.

I WFH on a Friday which helps.

I couldn’t do a 90 minute drive every day though, that would depress me. 1 hour on the train and a drive to the station with a short journey to your office, definitely doable for the right job and money.

Mabelface · 09/09/2019 18:41

1hr45m door to door. I'll be honest, it knackers me out. Walk, train, tram. I am nearly 50 though, so I do get more tired in general.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 09/09/2019 18:41

Roughly 30-40minutes each way by car, rarely any traffic on my route, I can’t use public transport as I work in the arse end of nowhere with no public transport routes. I quite enjoy driving so if its a pretty straight run I’d possibly consider it if the pay increase was going to far outweigh the extra fuel cost, if however half of that involves crawling along a gridlocked moterway there would be no chance. Also I’m not a morning person so I’d also have to ask myself if the pay was worth the earlier starts. If you have young kids I suppose it will also depend on whether it was going to be feesable childcare wise.

FredaFox · 09/09/2019 18:42

Ten mins walk to my local office or an hour and 15 mins to another office I work from twice a week (45 min train and 15 mins walk each way)
Once a month London so 2 hours 45 including walking to the station

London91 · 09/09/2019 18:42

My commute is around an hour and 30 mins door to door but could take longer if the trains are up the wall. I enjoy the peace to be honest. I do spend 12+ hours of the house some days but I wouldn't change it. My commute used to be shorter but the pay off is better in this job.

Sewingbea · 09/09/2019 18:43

Forty minutes in the morning because I leave the house before 7 am. At least fifty minutes in the way home, usually over an hour but on a bad traffic day can be over an hour and a half. I loath the wasted time. Moving jobs soon and will be about ten minutes away. I am so looking forward to it.

Slazengerbag · 09/09/2019 18:43

20 minutes each way. It’s single track country roads so if I’m stuck behind a tractor it can be an hour!

Purpleartichoke · 09/09/2019 18:43

For the past 10 years, 15 seconds to walk to my home office.

Previous house and office was about 30 minutes.
Before that it was a 30 minute walk or a 7 minute drive.

Before that, an hour plus each way.
