To ask how long your commute to work is?

Currently my trip to work is 1 hour door to door each way. I’ve got used to it and quite enjoy the alone time, particularly as it’s broken up with driving to train station, short train journey and then a walk to the office. Been offered a big opportunity in the city with a significant pay increase to match. Commute would be up to 2 hours each way door to door. Possibly a bit mad for even considering it?!

I’m interested...how long is your commute to work each day and for those who have or previously had a fairly long commute, how do you find it?!

8 mins walk
2 mins drive

Fifthtimelucky · 09/09/2019 21:21

I have recently retired but my commute for 18 years was a minimum of 3 hours. In practice it was often more than 4 hours a day, because there were so many problems with trains.

I would be worried that a 4 hour commute could easily turn into a 5 hour one if trains weren't reliable.

Would there be an option of working at home 1 or 2 days a week?

The long commute (on top of long hours at work) was one of the reasons I retired a bit early. However, you are young and you have no children, so for the big pay rise it would probably be worth it, at least for a few years.

Whatjusthappenedthere · 09/09/2019 21:22

2 hours each way. But includes a road that is often closed due to accidents. Same place every time. It took me over 3 hours to get home last week.
It’s crap. I do around 4000 miles a month. Spend 450 to 500 a month on fuel.
But audio books are my salvation. I’m up to date on the news and I love my job.

tequilasunrises · 09/09/2019 21:22

25-30 mins in the car usually but my journey home involves the M5 southbound so on a Friday in the summer holidays I expect around an hour to get home.

VivienScott · 09/09/2019 21:24

2 hours each way but I also work from home at least one day a week which helps.

CTRL · 09/09/2019 21:24

2 hours here. But to be fair that’s because I leave at 8 to drop my son to school then park my car and then make my way to work from the school.

When my son is off school and I leave directly from home - it’s 30 mins. 40 mins max

I commute just over 50 miles each way. On a good day it's an hour, a bad day 2-3 hours and on average 80-90 mins. Some days I really don't mind it, I quite enjoy the thinking time. Sometimes I call my family on my drive home (via the car hands free obvs). Other days it drives me insane and I dream of my old job 5 mins from home. For me I remind myself that the pros of the job far outweigh the cons. Often other people comment on how bad it must be, but I've gotten used to it over the years. I have 2 children, toddler and teen, and have done the journey for 7 years so it really isn't that bad.

JaceLancs · 09/09/2019 21:26

Was 30-45 minutes depending on traffic but have moved office and now it’s 5-10 minutes - very happy

justbeingadad · 09/09/2019 21:26

I work in Leeds, live just outside of Newcastle. It's 2h15 door to door, I go Tuesday morning and back Thursday night, WFH Monday and Friday. I've only been doing this a couple of weeks and it's fine. I have occasionally done Leeds as day trips before and it's fine - but I can't imagine doing it 5 days a week. I think even if you were doing it a Monday / Wednesday and Friday you'd be sick by the end of week 1. That said, I know lots of people who do similar commutes in the London area 3 days a week and it's pretty normal.

AmIDepressed80 · 09/09/2019 21:26

6 min walk to station 18-24 mins train and then another 6-7 min walk the other end - so max 40 mins.

PumpkinPie2016 · 09/09/2019 21:29

20-25 mins in the car. Local roads (no motorway).

No way would I do 2 hours each way - get too long out of the day.

I've never done more than 30 mins and my commutes have never involved motorways - I couldn't be bothered with all the delays/closures because of accidents etc. and then taking hours to get to/from work.

Maybe I'm just really lazy Blush

Ariela · 09/09/2019 21:30

15 mins. I would walk or cycle but invariably need the car for Other Stuff or need to get back to walk the dog/let the dog out/bring a horse in etc

Pollypenguin01 · 09/09/2019 21:31

2.5 hours each way but only twice/three times a week depending on what I’m doing.
I do sometimes commute 3.5 hours each way but that’s normally only once a month/six weeks -

I drive my commute but I enjoy driving so it’s nice to enjoy an audiobook in summer driving in the nice weather, the winter is pretty rubbish especially if it’s a bit icy early on!

RandomFactor · 09/09/2019 21:31

Mine's 20-25 mins in the car each way. I work flexibly, so I tend to go in early/leave early or later and leave later to miss the worst of the traffic, and I work from home sometimes, around a day a week or so, depending what I'm working on.

PumpkinPie2016 · 09/09/2019 21:31

whatjust do you use the M62 by any chance? That's near to us and forever closing! Caused mayhem locally.

NameChange84 · 09/09/2019 21:33

Outside of rush hour 40 minutes. Rush hour - 1hr30 mins.

dudsville · 09/09/2019 21:34

I used to have a 2 hour commute but I knew it was time limited. I hated it but it was worth it for the prize. Stopped as soon as I could. If the value the extra cash or change in work would bring then maybe that would be your prize!?

dannydyerismydad · 09/09/2019 21:35

30 minutes walk.

If I walk door to door it's about 15-20 minutes, but I walk DS to school on the way which slows me down.

Viviene · 09/09/2019 21:38

That works out 26GBP/h (25k/12 months /4 weeks/10hrs). Not bad (even if it's gross payrise). I did exactly that (took a job 2hrs away for a 2k payrise). I use public transport, wouldn't want to drive it. Can you negotiate working from home? It helps massively. Commuting takes toll on your health and wellbeing and the worst is, you get used to the money and don't want to give up a job ;) it is impossible if you have small kids though. You will be very tired if you do it 5 days a week though.

PavlovaFaith · 09/09/2019 21:39

Anywhere from 45-90 minutes thanks to the utter shit storm that is the M62.

Spinnaret · 09/09/2019 21:42

About 30 steps. From my bedroom to my study.

You'd have to pay me a hell of a lot to go back to a 2 hour each way commute.

CTRL · 09/09/2019 21:43

I remember when I was 19 I had a job that was on the other side of London and took me 2 hours to get to door to door.

It was long but I really loved working with my colleagues it made it worth while. I was there for 3 years before moving.

Mummyshark2018 · 09/09/2019 21:43

I wouldn't do it for a 25k payrise.
That's 20 hours travelling per week, not to mention cost of season tickets and potential train station parking and the extreme bone aching tiredness you get from travelling. Work out how much your time is worth and see if it makes sense.

eeksville · 09/09/2019 21:43

11min walk. I have found having a shorter commute & not having to get squashed on the tube makes a huge difference to my energy levels.

Acornacorn · 09/09/2019 21:44

2hrs each way but only 3 days/week
