To ask how long your commute to work is?

Currently my trip to work is 1 hour door to door each way. I’ve got used to it and quite enjoy the alone time, particularly as it’s broken up with driving to train station, short train journey and then a walk to the office. Been offered a big opportunity in the city with a significant pay increase to match. Commute would be up to 2 hours each way door to door. Possibly a bit mad for even considering it?!

I’m interested...how long is your commute to work each day and for those who have or previously had a fairly long commute, how do you find it?!

65 min dtd 2x a week + 3x wfh

for 4 years used to be around 1h40min each way, it nearly killed me because I was also on call, with broken nights I was exhausted all the time

it all depends if you can spend big chunk of it on the train and with guaranteed seat, without it give it around 18 months and you will hate everything and everyone around you

Strawbsc · 09/09/2019 19:19

Thanks everyone! Some of you have some amazingly short commutes, you’re very lucky Grin

Oh and to answer the questions, we don’t have DC yet. It’d be a £25k pay rise so quite significant

Mine is 2 hours each way, but I work on the train which is 1:40 minutes so it isn't wasted time.

AmericanLemonade · 09/09/2019 19:21

50 minute walk each way

Xmasbaby11 · 09/09/2019 19:25

25k pay rise? Yes I'd do it!

I have dc and my commute is about 20 mins by car. Pre dc it was about 1h30mins and it didn't bother me at all.

BoswellsBollocks · 09/09/2019 19:27

30/35 mins.

13 min walk to bus stop, 15 min bus trip then another short walk through town.

afrikat · 09/09/2019 19:27

Under 15 minutes door to door (driving)
Personally I wouldn't do more than 30 minutes and 2 hours would be hell for me but lots do it

hellinabreadbasket · 09/09/2019 19:30

Well now my commute is about 20 seconds from bedroom to office. But... I have done a two hour commute before - by car which I found ok for a few years. I’d go for it, but do check that it really is two hours, not say two and a half once you take into account train changes or traffic. Any more will be soul destroying,

minesagin37 · 09/09/2019 19:30

45 mins drive but it is 26 miles so that's not bad really.

Blanca87 · 09/09/2019 19:34

2 hrs door to door twice a week, then WFH the rest of my working week. Maybe that's something you could negotiate? even if it was 1 day WFH, the rest you commute?

Notthebradybunch · 09/09/2019 19:36

2 miles, I'm really lucky, one of the perks of the job!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/09/2019 19:37

30 minute walk, although I can do it in 20 if I really rush. I like to put my headphones in and walk briskly, but not to the point of arriving at work sweaty!

apostropheuse · 09/09/2019 19:40

27 minutes, to be precise.

5 minutes walk to train station, 12 minute train journey, 10 minute walk to office.

Beach11 · 09/09/2019 19:41

My daily commute use to be 3 hours but now 20mins. Had to cut the commute down as it impacted on work/life balance so much. We’re all now so much happier

littledrummergirl · 09/09/2019 19:42

Wfh. Out of bed in the office.

Dollymixture22 · 09/09/2019 19:44

30 min walk or 15 minute bus.

Used to be 40 min drive.

Couldn’t spend 4 hours a day commuting.

MildThing · 09/09/2019 19:47

How much would the journey cost?
Season tickets for a 2 hour train journey could easily use up a third of your increase.

What time will you finish work? Will you be too tired to cook do rely on ready meals and takeouts, with cost to health and budget.

When will you go to the gym/ go out (Fri nights late home), will you need to go to bed earlier because if earlier start?

Would they let you wfh one or two days a week?

Your travelling time will be the equivalent of another half weeks work.

Is it a great opportunity that will enable you to climb a ladder away from this as your permanent future?

Think v hard.

MrsJBaptiste · 09/09/2019 19:50

Up to an hour to get to work (8am) and 25 mins to get home (2.30pm)

24hourshomeedderandcarer · 09/09/2019 19:51

a minute.from upstairs to downstairs

i am my user name and although some dont class it as a job it really is

granted the home ed is optional but the 24 hour carer is not

RedSheep73 · 09/09/2019 19:52

1 hour each way, 45 mins if I get a good run, which is never. I couldn't do any more, that's my limit.

Goldenphoenix · 09/09/2019 19:53

Mine is twenty mins drive. I wouldn't do a 2 hour commute, I would rather have more time and less money!

8Track · 09/09/2019 19:53

8 minute walk to station.
5 min 'cushion' for train so I don't have to run!
40 minute train journey.
8 minute tube journey
6 minute walk.
About an hour, trains are half hourly though so a royal pain if I miss one!

Youngandfree · 09/09/2019 19:54

12-15 minutes.

Youngandfree · 09/09/2019 19:55

That’s driving! Not possible to walk really as it’s country roads onto a main road and then through a part of the main town.
