I just don't get it.

He isn't even a good singer.

What is the attraction? And why did the BBC award him so much compensation?

I saw him in concert over 25 years ago. It was ok but very cheesy. Lots of swatches of fabric being waved around and no real background lighting or anything you went wow over.
I only went as someone had a spare ticket and I would have been a bit pissed had I actually paid to go.

Ohflippineck · 07/09/2019 11:02

Not my cup of tea but his treatment by the BBC was completely out of order. £2 million is probably fair compensation for damage to his image and loss of earnings.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 07/09/2019 11:13

I don’t think he’s a great singer, find him very cheesy and a bit dodgy.

However I do wonder if denigrating his fans is similar to how boy bands are dismissed because they are primarily enjoyed by young girls, in Cliffs case it’s mainly older women who make up history fan base and, fuck me we can’t have older women visibly enjoying something without belittling it first, can we?

SpamChaudFroid · 07/09/2019 11:21

fact-finding' mission Hmm Grin

brassbrass · 07/09/2019 12:01

Glad the BBC got slapped where it hurts.

Cliff's hair is the creepiest thing for me. I can never get past it.

Whatafackinliberty · 07/09/2019 12:09

Kitty creeps me the fuck out.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/09/2019 12:10

fact-finding' mission hmm grin

I couldn't possibly comment....

Okurrrrrrrr · 07/09/2019 12:16

I don’t like him and I’m glad I won’t have to be embarrassed that I was ever a fan if/when certain things are revealed

^ That

SistersOfPercy · 07/09/2019 12:19

My old NDN has been obsessed with him for most of her life. He living room walls are full of decorative Cliff plates. She's a marketers dream, calendars, coasters etc. Someone even photoshopped her into a pic with him.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/09/2019 12:27

Someone even photoshopped her into a pic with him.

If your old neighbour is called Victoria and her surname begins with B - and by 'a pic with him' you meant 'a mash-up' - they did an extremely good job of it - as per the proof posted by a PP Grin

PositiveVibez · 07/09/2019 12:28

He once went on a very bizarre 'fact-finding' mission with Lord Longford and Jimmy Savile (look online if you want to know more)

Just did. Thanks for the rabbit hole 🤣. Just lost an hour of my life. Well not 'lost'. It was very interesting!

coolandcalm17 · 07/09/2019 12:52

Never liked him, and don’t know if any of the allegations about him are true. But one things for sure, him coming across as a nice clean cut guy doesn’t necessarily mean he is. It could just be the image he wants to portray.

SistersOfPercy · 07/09/2019 18:43

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll ahaha

It's actually a good job, they are of similar age and whoever did it has taken a pic from when they were both a lot younger. Makes me chuckle I admit.

Rachelover40 · 07/09/2019 20:29

Lord Longford was OK, Jimmy Saville wasn't but many people didn't know that until after he died. You can't blame Cliff for his brief association with Saville.

Why are people making such a fuss about Cliff Richard now? Nobody has to like him, not everyone likes the Rolling Stones (I do), but hardly worth a thread.

Unusualusernames · 07/09/2019 20:34

My nan used to love him. I'm surprised there's anyone left alive who's a fan 😂

Nanamilly · 07/09/2019 21:11

Not sure if he played in the apartheid era in SA.

Even if he did he still gives me the creeps

@SirJAmes - I think you've misunderstood the ref to apartheid

Rachelover40 · 08/09/2019 01:25

Cliff Richard played in Sun City in South Africa, where everyone was free to go. He and plenty of other artists wouldn't have gone to SA apart from there.

Unusualusernames, I get your point :-). I already mentioned old people behaving badly at Cliff concerts. When we went there was a woman who had taken her parents, she was walking in with her mum, dad was behind. She turned round to him and said, "Dad, wait, mum needs the toilet". Bless. I'll be like that one day, not that far ahead, but I think I won't go to concerts then. I'll stay indoors and watch TV.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/09/2019 03:49

I wasn't making any claims about Lord Longford (although a great many people found his staunch and enduring support for Myra Hindley extremely unpalatable); nor was I alleging that Cliff was implicated in Savile's crimes. I merely mentioned the three of them together as that's the best way to find info about the aforementioned 'mission' should people be interested - by searching for all three names together online.

MoaningMinnie1 · 08/09/2019 06:14

Yes, I get it WeBuilt.

I googled and found their mission was to investigate pornography and they were instrumental in bringing down Soho police who were involved in it. It wasn't just those three, there were a lot of quite high profile people who joined them, Lord Longford (Longporn as he was known when I was young) leading.
