Do not understand why some women adore Cliff Richard

I just don't get it.

He isn't even a good singer.

What is the attraction? And why did the BBC award him so much compensation?

@SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum

YABU. Cliff is fab. I am not a massive follower but think a lot of his songs are good. Also, you cannot argue with 60+ years in the industry and still going strong! And of COURSE he was entitled to lots of compo. Can't believe you question that!

Always hoped he would marry Olivia NJ too As @Jesaminecollins said, she is beautiful. Always was. Very easy on the eye, and an animal lover, and a very sweet lady.

Idontwanttotalk · 04/09/2019 21:52

@WhatsMyPassword

"It was Sue Barker he was engaged to."
No, he wasn't. They did have a romance and he "almost proposed" to her but after finding out from his manager that he'd lose 10% of his fan base, he decided against proposing.

Accountant222 · 04/09/2019 21:52

He makes my skin crawl as well. In a hotel in London a good few years ago, cliff gets out of a lift and sort of poses (rather than just walking on) two old dears go to chat with him, he was so bloody rude to them.

Rachelover40 · 04/09/2019 21:59

Cliff Richard is a national institution and thoroughly good bloke (not perfect, no one is). I'm not aware of women actually fancying him because he is hardly a sex symbol. I mean, he's not Tom Jones. However he is likeable and appears to have integrity.

I've seen him live. Once at a Billy Graham rally at Crystal Palace, could have been 1990. No one knew Cliff was going to be there so it was a pleasant surprise. He came up onto the stage with his guitar and sang a simple, heartfelt song.

My husband was a great Cliff Richard and the Shadows fan so for his fortieth birthday we took him to Wembley to see them in concert - what a great show it was!

A few years back we saw him and the Shadows at O2. Lots of old people in the audience. There was one old man who got out of his seat and danced and near to us, a man dressed as a teddy boy did the same.
A woman in front of us was calling out, "Hank! Hank! Hank!" continually. Talk about old people behaving badly. It was fun.

When Cliff did a come back show in recent years at the O2 I bought two tickets but I wasn't well so my son went with husband. I can't say son is a fan but he is a musician and acknowledges Cliff's place in the history of British pop music.

Why criticise someone just because you can't understand why people fancy him? I doubt there are many who do fancy him these days but he is very much liked.

Idontwanttotalk · 04/09/2019 22:01

@BeepBeeeep
Very good.

Idontwanttotalk · 04/09/2019 22:18

@Jesaminecollins
"Cliff is a nice guy and I don't care what his sexuality is - Just the same as George Michael who I liked and listened to his songs - I didn't care because I admired him as an artist."
I admired George Michael as an artist. He had a tremendous voice and was amazing at the Queen concert singing 'Somebody to love' in tribute to Freddie Mercury. I didn't like him though - the lewd act he was arrested for in a public lavatory, drug driving and cottaging put me off him totally. His excuse "It's just who I am" and on cottaging "It’s a much nicer place to get some quick and honest sex than standing in a bar, E’d off your tits shouting at somebody and hoping they want the same thing as you do in bed.”

It's a shame but when I hear his music now I can't not think about the type of person he was.

MsPepperPotts · 04/09/2019 22:23

I think YABU but that's my opinion.
He's a lovely guy. Me and my sister sat in London Heathrow Airport early 2000. He was sat there and started chatting to us whilst my BIL went for coffee.
I was really taken by his gentlemanly manner. He didn't have to talk to us but he started the conversation asking us where we were flying to etc etc.
My BIL face when he came back was a picture when he saw Cliff.

I like his music just as I appreciate loads of artists/bands/singers over a period of many years that can actually sing live and put their heart and soul into their music.

The press and the BBC targeted him and I for one am glad that the BBC have had to pay him out.

SallyWD · 04/09/2019 22:24

He seems like a decent bloke. He's definitely not my type. I've never been attracted to these very clean cut, goody two shoes type men. It's like why would anyone fancy Philip Schofield?

Jesaminecollins · 04/09/2019 22:33

@Idontwanttotalk

I think a lot people have a dubious personal life but they keep it hidden but if you are in the public eye you have no chance of keeping it a secret. George Michael did lead a promiscuous life but he was a generous person who likes to share his wealth by helping others - that is why I think he was a good person.

Mac47 · 04/09/2019 22:33

Some people on here are horrible!! I like him because I loved Summer Holiday and The Young Ones growing up. I find him benign. Like David Bellamy or bill oddie. Like hi-de-hi on a Sunday night. Just nice and there.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 04/09/2019 22:38

I don't get it either, but then some of his songs are catchy - Suddenly, Wired for Sound, Living Doll. I don't like watching him though, he reminds me of a lizard. No idea why.

Glitterfisher · 04/09/2019 22:57

My late MIL adored him. I am in my 30s and thought he was lovely in summer holiday. I watched it recently with my DS (he loves musicals) and I had forgotten how good it was, if you like that sort of thing.

I definitely find him cheesy now but there is nothing wrong with that, he has had an incredible career and was treated horrendously. When it was first in the news that he could be involved in that scandal I admit I wasn't sure if I thought he was guilty or not but seeing how he reacted and how his friends reacted once it was dropped I genuinely think he did nothing wrong.

Glitterfisher · 04/09/2019 22:58

Yes I agree re Philip Schofield, he is in the same category as Cliff IMO.

Kia123456 · 04/09/2019 23:00

I love Cliff! I was brought up listening to him as my mum was a huge fan and I still listen to him now.

StoneofDestiny · 04/09/2019 23:11

He has always struck me as creepy

Iwanttoredecorateagain · 04/09/2019 23:11

Something bothers me about him. I dunno.

Pikapikachooo · 04/09/2019 23:11

Name ONE woman that loves him

SoleBizzz · 04/09/2019 23:15

Kurri that's funny

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/09/2019 23:45

I feel the same about Tom Jones, can’t bear his music and I find him very cringeworthy, especially when he sings Sex Bomb!

Tom has an amazing voice and, unlike most singers, he hasn't lost it as he ages. I know what you mean about Sex Bomb, though - it's a bit great uncle at a wedding now.

However, my admiration of him as a singer is very much countered by sadness as to how he treated his poor late wife. She stuck by him throughout (doubtless she enjoyed the rich, privileged lifestyle too) and he just betrayed her again and again.

I agree about Cliff - some of his songs are quite catchy, but I've always found him creepy. I suppose his appeal to a lot of women of a certain age is no different from that of the likes of Justin Bieber to their granddaughters. Obviously, none of the charges have been proven, but he's been linked with a lot of very questionable people throughout his career.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/09/2019 23:48

Yes I agree re Philip Schofield, he is in the same category as Cliff IMO.

Those irritating We Buy Any Car adverts have me shouting at the telly every time. Yes, Phil - if we were as rich as you, we doubtless would value our time more than 'a few quid' (more likely a few hundred or more), but we ordinary people don't have the luxury that you have of being able to wave away what to us is a significant amount of money simply because we can't be bothered with it.

Hellomatey001 · 05/09/2019 00:12

and I think he a good person.

Didn't he play in apartheid era South Africa?

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 05/09/2019 10:24

Not sure if he played in the apartheid era in SA.

Even if he did he still gives me the creeps.

I much preferred Adam Faith. Does anyone else remember him?

Heavens, yes. I remember Adam Faith.
