To think a second referendum is the ONLY democratic way forward?

With Remain, Deal and No Deal on the ballot?

It’s becoming so tricky to gage the public view on Brexit now that No Deal seems the most likely outcome. The DM comments would have you believe that No Deal was what we voted for all along. There a #remainernow campaigns on Twitter that argue that No Deal was never what anyone voted before. There are original Remainers that claim we have been treated so badly by the EU that they would now vote to Leave.

I still think Leave would win, but I think this would be split between Deal and No Deal giving Remain a majority.

But Brexit with a Deal and No Deal Brexit are seemingly two different factions now, so how else can any government democratically get around this?

Thoughts?

In 2016, we effectively voted on a blank piece of paper. No-one had any idea what Brexit might look like.

So, we now can see what's likely to happen, the sheer mess that has resulted. We need a second referendum, because no-one ever voted for this.

Democracy is not following a path set in stone. Democracy responds to changes as they arise. Or women would still be without the vote.

The current situation is like ordering something online, only to find when it arrives it looks nothing like you expected and then sending it back. We have the right to change our minds when new information comes out.

And that's before we get onto the election fraud from the Leave campaign.

I think there are some fairly simple solutions to the issue.

  1. Accept the referendum has no binding power at all and just forget the whole debacle and maintain relationship with EU.
  2. Undertake a 2nd referendum where voting is MANDATORY for all adults in the UK aged 18 or over. Spell out in clear detail on the referendum paper what the impact of the choices are. E.g. leave EU - face economic hardship, no trade deals, no free movement for the British in Europe, potential shortage of prescription medication, food. Also state that leaving will not mean that immigrants will be rounded up and deported and that they'll be able to stay anyway. Then see what the vote is.

A referendum based on a complete lack of a plan, or knowledge, where turnout was not 100%, can hardly be the basis of trying to leave the EU.

Idontwanttotalk · 04/09/2019 13:54

No. The vote to leave the EU must be respected. I would be happy if they put 'deal' or 'no deal' to the country but what deal? If you are referring to a potential future deal then that could dragged out for ever. I wouldn't want to accept Theresa May's deal.

No deal is better than a bad deal and we haven't see a decent deal yet.

MaximusHeadroom · 04/09/2019 14:23

We voted. We voted to leave. Whether you agree with the decision or not doesn't make it undemocratic. I voted remain and I would love it if we could stay but we can't. WE voted to go.

Out of interest, is there any set of circumstances or consequences where the sanctity of the non-binding referendum is less important than the national interest?

MaximusHeadroom · 04/09/2019 14:24

A second referendum would need to be 2-tier.

  1. Leave or revoke
  2. Deal or no deal

Then leavers won't feel (rightly) that their vote has been split.

MaximusHeadroom · 04/09/2019 14:27

@Idontwanttotalk

If you are open to a referendum, why on earth are you against including the option to revoke? Why are we not allowed to change our minds based on being in posession of more information?

If revoke won, it would clearly be the will of the people Confused

gluteustothemaximus · 05/09/2019 00:09

2nd ref far too dangerous. People will still vote to leave on the principle that they 'won' the first one. And remainers are prepared to vote leave as well Confused

Best not leave it up to the public. We can't even name a boat.

serenoa · 05/09/2019 00:24

That last one was the second referendum on this subject. Do we want another one like that? I don't. Would we tolerate another one with sensible rules, like a supermajority required for any change? Maybe. Study Switzerland for how to do this stuff, they do it all the time.
