Aibu to think private school kids wearing their logoed school jumpers at the weekend is weird?

Isn’t it a bizarre stealth boast, except it’s not stealthy at all and a bit attention seeking? I know several children who do this. If your child does, why?

You’d never catch a state educated child wearing their school jumper at the weekend. If my child started to, I’d suggest they changed.

Bluntness100 · 03/09/2019 12:33

She vehemently believes in something, argues for it and lives by it

And this is a positive. Where it becomes morally unacceptable is when you attack the kids or the parents, focus on the system, take the discussion on what you're doing about it.

Not start some mad thread saying kids who wear private school hoodies are showing off. Confused

Manontry · 03/09/2019 12:33

Yes, I've said my dd wore her sports hoodie at times over the summer for no other reason than she liked it. Some kids do occasionally wear school sports hoodies. When she was at state school she had a personalised school sports hoodie which she also wore sometimes at weekends. Not sure what you are expecting people to say. Are you hoping someone is going to say that their kid wears one to make other kids feel inferior? I doubt anyone will say that. I think dd2 was showing off a bit with the lacrosse first team hoodie though. She was proud to be in the first team.

floravus · 03/09/2019 12:35

Did you read my post, OP?

FrangipaniBlue · 03/09/2019 12:35

Are people reading my posts? It’s during school holidays, not for school events. It’s for leisure, not uniform, purposes.

Are you reading other posts OP? The ones where I and others have said that our kids (state and privately) are CHOOSING to wear their school branded jumpers outside school?

Or perhaps you're deliberately ignoring those posts because they don't fit with your private school bashing agenda.

zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 12:36

I was responding to posters who continually keep saying it’s probably Saturday school/detention.

I think this thread shows the deep cavern between state and private education and the resentment and defensiveness on both sides. So I’m not surprised.

OP posts:
senua · 03/09/2019 12:36

still missing your point?
You seem to believe in Public Good which is great. But, from what I have seen, a lot of private schools are kept afloat by the wages of (the better paid) public servants. It's rather ironic.

Actually, dredging my memory, it's not just me. There have been MN threads on this before. Many private schools are stuffed full of the DC of teachers, doctors, etc.

lau888 · 03/09/2019 12:37

YABU; kids be kids, to paraphrase the common parlance. I've also seen state school kids wear their school sweaters during leisure hours. It's just clothes. I'd guess it's the first item to hand and they've given it almost no thought other than they're accustomed to wearing it.

zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 12:38

Frangi - I wasn’t ignoring you, I was responding to other posts.

It’s interesting that kids want to wear school kit. It does seem like a badge of honour in some ways - fee paying school/sports team - and also tribal foe others - leavers jumpers. An interesting mix. But shows that it is a modern phenomenon. It’s only the private school kids who do it round here though so it does look like more of a statement.

OP posts:
Manontry · 03/09/2019 12:39

Maybe it is a statement? Maybe they are showing off? So what? You've already decided you despise everything they stand for, why should they have to tiptoe round what you find acceptable or not?

Bluntness100 · 03/09/2019 12:40

I think this thread shows the deep cavern between state and private education and the resentment and defensiveness on both sides

Generally I think that's predominantly you. Only a couple of people seem to have deep seated issues like you. Everyone else is a bit live and let live but takes offence at daft attacks dressed up as something else.

Start a thread about how to improve state education. Talk about all the wonderful work you claim to be doing. Suggest what others can do. Do something positive.

Because I can assure you this petty thread isn't positive or in your favour.

zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 12:40

Senua - sorry, I get it now. I completely agree. Many of our high paid public sector colleagues/friends/associates sold out too - its a great shame. But many also do extensive private work alongside their public sector role so don’t share my politics.

OP posts:
zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 12:41

Bluntness I’ll start a thread as I like. Read the news sometimes, this is a widely argued debate almost daily in the educational news. By all means opt out but don’t tell m me a debate is petty when sitting in your private school debating glasshouse.

OP posts:
zzzzzzzz12345 · 03/09/2019 12:43

Manontry - they are indeed allowed to show off. And I am similarly entitled to judge them accordingly.

OP posts:
floravus · 03/09/2019 12:44

So presumably you are ignoring those who have given alternative reasons for wearing school attire outside of school. Is it also not just the same as uni students wearing a hoody with their uni badge on outside of uni? People have been doing that for many years...

Soreo · 03/09/2019 12:47

We could afford it...but we don’t think our kids deserve a better education than anyone else

Well that's just odd OP! If I can afford it I will give my DCs every opportunity I can.

But I am with you on your original post, it's most certainly a stealth boast in many cases.

Spanglemum · 03/09/2019 12:48

My daughter goes to a state comprehensive and she wears her PE hoodie all the time outside of school.

colourlessgreenidea · 03/09/2019 12:49

Not start some mad thread saying kids who wear private school hoodies are showing off

But that was merely the platform upon which to place her soapbox Wink

Bluntness100 · 03/09/2019 12:50

By all means opt out but don’t tell m me a debate is petty when sitting in your private school debating glasshouse

And it's comments like this that let you down op. Because you've no idea who I am, how I grew up or why I elected to privately educated my child.

Yes you can start silly threads about how private school kids are showing off by wearing school hoodies. If that's what you want to discuss, knock yourself out.

BogglesGoggles · 03/09/2019 12:50

I think this thread shows the deep cavern between state and private education and the resentment and defensiveness on both sides. So I’m not surprised.

Starting with your prejudice perhaps? Private schools not the real world, parents who choose to privately educate somehow magically making the state system worse despite alleviating strain on resources (actually adding resource if their school has charitable status) and providing a competitor to create comparison and thus encourage higher standards in the state sector? You either don’t like privately educated people or you feeling insecure about your choices/reasoning and feel the need to overcompensate.

danceswithdeath · 03/09/2019 12:51

My son is 7 at private school and he has a school hoodie that they are allowed to wear in winter on the playground... he sometimes wears it outside of school because it's comfy???

colourlessgreenidea · 03/09/2019 12:55

And I am similarly entitled to judge them accordingly.

Of course. We’re all entitled to judge anyone on the basis of whatever criteria we chose.

But why start a disingenuous thread presenting your bafflement about ‘private school uniform at the weekend’ when your agenda was actually to start a private vs state bun fight whilst letting everyone know what a worthy moral activist you are?

senua · 03/09/2019 13:01

You started by describing private school families as "attention seeking", "entitled", "separatist". You said that there is a "deep cavern" between state and private.
Then it turns out that these people you have been 'othering' are actually your "colleagues/friends/associates".

Who is creating the division here?Hmm

youarenotkiddingme · 03/09/2019 13:08

Zzzzzzz but how do you answer the fact that many of us on here all from various backgrounds have all stated their own kids wear sports hoodies and school hoodies throughout the year.
Because they have a sense of pride in that community and their own achievements.

You also haven't answered the question I specifically asked you which was whether this was school uniform jumper or the hoodies etc attached to being team members/sports club member?

Because you go on and on about wanting equality for all - which I applaud the ideal and agree with your stance.

But my ds and I are low income, he's disabled and I'm a LP. He could easily be one of the kids you describe. Except he's state educated. And many of us have a,so explained these tips cost £30/40.
Can't you understand that from the low income bracket we sacrifice to buy these hoodies etc and cannot afford for them to be sat in a wardrobe whilst our kids wear a plain old hoody that's cost us more money on top.

My ds has 5 hooded tops.

  1. club top for his sport.
  2. hoody from competing at county level
  3. school logo top with drama production on the back 4/5) cream and black thick/fluffy inside hoody for extreme winter.

Why would I buy more?!

Cocoismydog · 03/09/2019 13:15

Zzzzzzzz do you also disagree with Grammar schools where only the academic have the opportunity to attend?
If you are financially well off, do you live in a desirable area with desirable state schools or do you choose to live in a impoverished area with poor state schools? If you are using your wealth to be near decent states school are you any different than the parents choosing private education?

5zeds · 03/09/2019 13:19

Kids round here wear their leaving hoodies often in the holidays (state and public school), school uniform less often but I suspect a laundry backlog when they do not boasting. I still don’t think there is anything to boast about. I had children at both state and public school and nobody seems to feel any void between the two. I think this is a weird chip on your shoulder OP. Nobody else cares where anyone’s kids are educated.
