To not understand Brexit?

HakunaMatataa · 02/09/2019 18:34

Please don't come for me, I am very out of the loop r.e: Brexit. I have no idea what is happening and what the implications of this could be on our everyday lives.

I keep seeing threads about stock piling ect and now I'm left wondering if I should be preparing?!

So basically I suppose I'd like some views on Brexit, some pro's and cons in layman's terms, so I can try and get my head around it please.

Is this just alot of scare mongering going on or shall I be concerned?

I've obviously googled this but politics isnt my strong point and I just don't get it.

Well said Feduppluckingmychinhairs, disgraceful.

For those who don't understand the backstop and why it is necessary to protect the GFA, you may want to read this thread.

"... the Ireland situation". I mean. No one can know everything. But, really?!

Jason118 · 02/09/2019 21:40

@Autumnintheair so you're saying a terrorist attack in France is a good enough reason for us to leave the EU? Seriously!!!

ilovesooty · 02/09/2019 21:49

The OP stuck her neck out on AIBU in an attempt to clarify her understanding. I don't have a problem with that.

Some of the other ignorance on this thread is profoundly depressing though. The statements are so ignorant they're not worth debating.

doadeer · 02/09/2019 21:56

@DioneTheDiabolist Sorry I didn't mean to be insensitive - that's awful that jobs have gone already 😔

TheresWaldo · 02/09/2019 22:12

Jobs, pensions, healthcare, right to free movement, all fucked. I am beyond furious about it all. No one gave a shit about it, beyond a demented minority 3 years ago. Taking back control = fucking so many people over it's unbelievable.

Bluntness100 · 02/09/2019 22:12

Op

We are scheduled to leave the eu on 31 Oct.
No deal is agreed,
Boris is threatening to leave with no deal in an attempt to get consessions from the eu that will allow a deal to be agreed.
No deal would cause us major negative implications. From a five percent min cost of living increase and a steep rise in unemployment, short term we would have food and fuel shortages.
Parliament wishes to stop him allowing us to leave with no deal.
They will vote on it tomorrow. If they pass the vote Boris will call for a general election,
If they do not he will use the next month to try to get concessions from the eu.
The eu has said no further concessions are available.
The main sticking point is the back stop in Ireland.
If we exit the eu we trade on wto. To legally do so we need to protect our border, our only land border with the eu is Ireland.so Northern Ireland and the republic Ireland would need a border between them.
To trade under eu terms you legally need to protect your border.so the same as above. Both countries need to protect their border.
No solution exists globally to do so without a physical hard border.
The good Friday agreement says no border.
The back stop says you have two years to find a solution. If you do not you need to put a hard border in.
Parliament is saying this is not ok and refuse to accept it.
The eu is saying they cannot remove the need for the backstop because legally the borders need to be protected and this is just an insurance that If no solution is found in the two years post leaving then they need to put it in.
Any options to resolve it, like a customs union, have been rejected by the U.K.,

So Boris is trying to find a solution for that in the next month.

If he does not, no one knows what will happen. We cannot exit with no deal as an immediate hard border will be required, no grace period.we will break the good Friday agreement. As well as the major financial implications we would endure. Short and long term.

That's kind of where we are. It's really a total shit show.

On the question of isotopes, you have to remember we are not only leaving the EU but also Euratom. Euratom governs how radioactive materials are moved around Europe - that includes the materials for nuclear medicine. Unless we have a substitute for the Euratom treaty, moving isotopes becomes much more difficult.

chergar · 02/09/2019 22:15

Nobody understands Brexit, it is a leap in to the unknown.

I do not understand why anyone voted leave, what are the benefits of leave, what will British people be able to do that could not be done while being in the EU?

These are genuine questions and I am not being flippant but could someone (especially those who voted leave) tell me what you actually wanted/thought would happen?

KennDodd · 02/09/2019 22:21

One of the best things you can do is get yourself an EU passport if that's a possibility for you op. For most of us this isn't possible but you might have access to one through a parent. That way if the shit really hits the fan you can get yourself out of the country.

Trimummy3 · 02/09/2019 22:24

To answer a previous question, things I want from brexit:
Stop paying them money
Make our own rules and laws
Better immigration policy, based on skills/need
Fishing industry better
Eventually a chance to improve our country

doadeer · 02/09/2019 22:26

Which EU rules do you disagree with?

Before Brexit I never heard anyone complain that they were furious about an EU law 🙄

chergar · 02/09/2019 22:27

The Eu passport thing really bugs me, I think people who were born under GB being in the EU should have the option to retain an EU passport.

Bellasblankexpression · 02/09/2019 22:36

@Trimummy3 “stop paying them money” - care to elaborate on this point

Fair enough op is trying to educate herself but some of the utter ignorance on this thread is shocking. I’m sorry but it is. I don’t profess to be a great political mind or fully comprehend every single implication or how it might play out (let’s be honest nobody does) but the sheer lack of basic understanding is breathtaking.

ilovesooty · 02/09/2019 22:37

So @Trimummy3... what laws do we currently have that you hold the EU responsible for and you'd like to see abolished?

ilovesooty · 02/09/2019 22:38

@Bellasblankexpression - absolutely.

TheCatsACunt · 02/09/2019 22:45

Fishing industry better

Make schools good.

Trimummy3 · 02/09/2019 22:50

If it’s such a terrible bloody idea, why did they even ask the question?

chergar · 02/09/2019 22:54

David Cameron wanted to retain power and was facing losing votes to UKIP so promised an in/out referendum if elected never thinking that people would actually vote leave.

Trimummy3 · 02/09/2019 22:55

Ah remain calling leavers thick, what a surprise to see on this thread. I am degree educated and I have a good job. I am not stupid!

Trimummy3 · 02/09/2019 22:58

Someone else must have thought leaving the eu was a good idea at some point... not just dave. I don’t think that’s how it works.

Why did he think that would get more votes? There must have been ideas floating around before “the advert on the side of a bus” that the eu was not good for us?

Are you saying that over half the country are stupid?!

chergar · 02/09/2019 22:59

@Trimummy3 the things you have listed are all things the UK can control even in the EU, so no need to leave for that.

chergar · 02/09/2019 23:01

I think half the Country are misinformed and believed the lies and propaganda laid out by the leave campaign. Also some racism and protest votes .

Trimummy3 · 02/09/2019 23:04

Unfortunately most of the country don’t have degrees in politics.

So you are saying we could have declined paying money to eu whilst still retaining our membership?

We could only accept people to live and work here that meet strict criteria that meet our particular need for skills? But still be in the eu?

Trimummy3 · 02/09/2019 23:07

If eu is so terrible why was it even offered to us? Where did the original idea of brexit come from? Why is the country and government still split? Surely if it’s such a stinker of an idea that will lead to zombie/food shortage/nhs destruction times... why are certain members of government still pushing for it?

Bellasblankexpression · 02/09/2019 23:30

@trimummy3 I don’t think your thick at all, but I think you’re woefully misinformed on this topic.
You can be degree educated all you like (I am too but in a completely unrelated subject to politics) and it doesn’t mean you’ll have a good grasp of world events, that requires reading etc and researching to form your opinions.
The things you have listed could be controlled without us leaving the EU.
The reason people are so frustrated about it all is because a lot of people believe that a question as complex as leaving the EU should not have been given as an open stay/leave question in a referendum. It wasn’t about whether it was a good idea or best for the people, it was a power play on David Cameron’s part that backfired miserably.
Even the pro- brexiter campaigns didn’t expect us to leave, you only need to see the footage of Boris and Nigel in the days after the vote to be able to see that.
