11 yo DD & Hotter Shoes

X took DD school shoe shopping. We discussed getting DM,s or Clark's. DD now has a pair of Hotter black school shoes. Aren't they for the over 50's?
Will this potentially ruin dds first year at high school?

WIBU to raise the matter and suggest we return them?

NB: This would also mean I'd have to spend this weekend looking for School shoes.

AIBU?

Those Kickers would definitely be seen as trainers at my Dd's school.

TheClitterati · 29/08/2019 10:49

arrgh!! thanks @KnifeAngel

I have emailed the school - I am assuming staff will be in today.

DD (going into Y8) says that loads of girls have shoes like that at her school and they are quite fashionable.

Dipi · 29/08/2019 11:35

@iamthere123, the manner in which you have spoken about Bookworm's child is unfathomable and TOTALLY unacceptable. I can only imagine what victimisation you have been subjected to in your life to warrant your level of misplaced vitriol. You, my dear, are the 'nasty' one.

cookiechomper · 29/08/2019 11:45

Do not send your daughter to school in Hotter shoes. They are awful and they stand out as a shoe for the elderly.

Alsohuman · 29/08/2019 11:47

The Hotters shoes look pretty much the same as the Kickers.

TheClitterati · 29/08/2019 12:00

Not hear back from school yet - concerned both the Kicker and Hotters will be considered "trainers".

So I've ordered some lace up Lo Kickers which will be delivered tomorrow - so if they don''t fit I can order some more for delivery Monday.

Even if the hotter shoes look like Kickers (as some are saying), they are not Kickers. Kids would prefer a complete non brand - Tesco or Primark - over something that’s trying to be something they’re not or an old fashioned brand.

I remember once my Mum got my some Matchstick trainers that she thought looked like Reebok classics and they did - except they weren’t Reebok. I was teased terribly every single PE lesson. Kids would all shout “oooo Matchstick!” in a really insulting way every time. Kids can be absolutely vile at times.

TheClitterati · 29/08/2019 14:42

Kids can be absolutely vile at times.

absolutely and sadly things like brands/trends can become a focus.

DD has avoided it so far really well and I hope she continues to be her own person, but I know choppy times/challenges are probably ahead.

DD1 has these:

www.schuh.co.uk/womens/schuh-house-party-black-flat-shoes/1339137020/

In her school in Y9 most girls have these kind of sturdy lace up shoes, ballet flat slip-ons or loafers. A few have Mary Janes.

SandraOhshair · 29/08/2019 17:17

Hotter shoes would be social suicide for a tween. She might be ok about it now, but that's before taunting and ridicule that she'll inevitably get once some bright spark spots the brand.
Take them back to spare the heartache and wasted money.
This is from someone who chose to wear jesus sandals and couldn't give a stuff about the comments! But I did get them!

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/08/2019 18:14

Some 'Hotter' shoes are really cool. Hotter shoes are not old fashioned

I'm trying not to fall around laughing at this. There is absolutely nothing cool about any Hotter shoes and someone suggesting they are "really cool" is just batshit. I've dialled 0800-Fashion Police and reported this madness.

In the meantime, get the your poor DD some Kickers OP.

berlinbabylon · 29/08/2019 18:25

There is absolutely nothing cool about any Hotter shoes

I do agree with this, but school isn't the place to be cool.

Different example but I was quite shocked by this. Work colleague said her mother had bought a new mobile phone and been given a Samsung tablet computer with it. She offered it to my colleague's son who was in year 7 at the time. He refused it because it wasn't an Ipad and he'd get the mickey taken out of him. This is a state school in a fairly affluent area. I mean, really? At ds' school nobody would have cared and we are in a fairly affluent area. Kids had all sorts of mobile phones from bricks to stupidly expensive iPhones.

CottonSock · 29/08/2019 18:30

I doubt the 'cool kids ' will know what hotter shoes look like though.

Alsohuman · 29/08/2019 18:33

Especially as they look exactly like the Kickers that are apparently as cool as fuck.

thirdfiddle · 29/08/2019 18:47

Hotter shoes would be social suicide for a tween.
Sounds good to me, brush off all the shallow types and make nice friends instead. Now tempted to suggest to my kids deliberately starting school armed with uncool shoes and snappy comebacks.

AuntieMarys · 29/08/2019 18:51

They are hideous.
I speak as a woman of 60.

Mummyshark2019 · 29/08/2019 19:06

Hotters are great. The most comfortable shoe ever. I wear them and in early 40s. That black one you showed not so nice, but ideal for school.

Glitterblue · 29/08/2019 19:17

They're awful, my 90 year old grandma has a pair of these exact shoes and DH's 76 year old step mother wears Hotter and only Hotter.

Proseccoinamug · 29/08/2019 19:40

The cool kids will know what hotter shoes are because their grandma, great aunt and the occasional unfashionable mum -like me- will have them.
Even I wouldn’t wear those. I like comfort but I’m selective!

Proseccoinamug · 29/08/2019 19:40

Strikethrough fail

NerrSnerr · 29/08/2019 19:57

In an ideal world that'll be great and 37 year old me looks back and wishes I could have been like that. I had the friends who were not interested in being 'cool' but it still hurt every time I got picked on for my hideous green backpack, my coat that was 2 sizes too big and my shoes that were falling apart. I didn't want really expensive stuff, no one in my school had that but I didn't want to stick out like a sore thumb.

Now I don't care and will wear what I want but 13/ 14 year old didn't want to fight that battle.

ElizaPancakes · 29/08/2019 20:01

I must be getting old or daft because practically all these shoes look the same to me Confused

I think you’ve made the right decision though, kids can be merciless and it’s especially tough going into y7 without too many friends.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/08/2019 20:09

Would I wear my white Pods buckle shoes, or my Dinosaur Converse for a first meeting with someone?
No, of course not, I love them, but they're unconventional.
Sometimes it's good to fit in until you find your tribe, then you can be a bit more expressive.

ivartheboneless · 29/08/2019 20:13

I'd return them, she will most probably be picked on for them. They are to me old lady shoes (sorry 🤭)
Your daughter may be okay to wear them now but in a week or so she will probably not feel the same and you will then need to replace the shoes anyway.
My DD has just gone in to second year of high school and she would not be seen dead In these.
Although she is lucky that she can wear her black Vans or Nike trainers to school as they are all black so her school isn't as strict with footwear.
