11 yo DD & Hotter Shoes

TheClitterati · 28/08/2019 23:54

X took DD school shoe shopping. We discussed getting DM,s or Clark's. DD now has a pair of Hotter black school shoes. Aren't they for the over 50's?
Will this potentially ruin dds first year at high school?

WIBU to raise the matter and suggest we return them?

NB: This would also mean I'd have to spend this weekend looking for School shoes.

Jesus Christ I’ve always been all about dressing with individuality and wearing what you like but they are like shoes you get in a Sunday newspaper supplement . She will be like a lamb to the slaughter , it’s one thing letting a child cultivate their own style but I think these were chosen as she hasn’t got one yet .
Also all those who say ‘I’m not 60 and wear hotter shoes’ looked at the website , every single shoe is either pensioner or Sunday school teacher , not a single stylish thing on there . There is so much choice out there for comfy shoes you don’t need to resort to these .

amusedbush · 29/08/2019 20:22

I laughed out loud at this Grin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/08/2019 20:29

I had Ecco shoes or StartRite in first year seniors, because my feet are stupidly wide. I was a fan of being comfortable and nobody mentioned my shoes. My trainers for PE were another matter and I had pink Marks and Spencers trainers that would have been OK if I was 6, but at 11 I was a laughing stock.

Bookworm4 · 29/08/2019 21:19

@ichifanny
That’s hilarious, I thought nun shoes myself 🤣

GorkyMcPorky · 29/08/2019 21:45

I teach secondary and I'm afraid I'd probably question whether or not the Kickers were shoes during a uniform check (I actually think they're nearly as ugly as the Hotters too).

That’s bollocks. You have clearly not looked at every single shoe on the site Grin

Also, a lot of people posting on this thread would benefit from acquainting themselves with the concept of “IMO” before pontificating about style Hmm

ichifanny · 29/08/2019 22:05

Giantkitten you can say you are stylish and like those shoes but you are fooling no one , went through whole site not a nice shoe to be seen . Honestly they are boring at best .

ichifanny · 29/08/2019 22:06

We aren’t talking about 40 something style , we are talking about teenage style .

GabriellaMontez · 29/08/2019 22:17

My mum has some like this (following foot surgery). They are the only things that fit and she hates them. We try to find nice things to say about them to cheer her up.

StinkyWizleteets · 29/08/2019 22:18

I have had a good much needed laugh at some of the responses here. So thank you.

I wore a pair of men’s grey trainers to school in 2nd y high school. They were too big for me and they weren’t a fashionable brand. I never lived it down and even now in my 40s if I see one particular guy from school he still calls me the name I was slagged with at the time. Don’t do it op. Teach the dad about fashion before he gets her scone shoes for Xmas.

olivesnutsandcheese · 29/08/2019 22:26

She'll get slaughtered. Save yourself the hassle and DD the trauma and go shopping and get something else. I'm afraid those shoes are truly hideous

yellowallpaper · 29/08/2019 22:27

The Clark's and the hotter look pretty hideous but the hotter look much more comfortable

Mummyshark2019 · 29/08/2019 22:29

There are some beautiful shoes on hotters website. They are so comfortable.

GiantKitten · 29/08/2019 22:36

ichifanny

I don’t claim to be “stylish” in the first place, but did it ever cross your mind that “stylish” is entirely subjective!?

Hence the need for a bit of IMO here Hmm

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/08/2019 22:46

I've never heard of Hotter shoes until I opened this thread. I'm 28 and I'd wear them!

A girl starting secondary school is a different situation though. It's easy to say "be yourself" but there's so much peer pressure at that age.

SerenDippitty · 29/08/2019 23:11

I’ll stick my neck out and say I think these boots are pretty stylish, especially in the Regency and floral.

MollyButton · 29/08/2019 23:15

I know Hotter is a MN joke, but I love those boots! And I do have a pair of sandals from there, which I think look okay and are very comfortable.

But then my grandmother would never have worn the original shoes - they look like Nun's shoes to me, not something my Grandmother would have worn.

Polyjuice · 29/08/2019 23:50

Ooh no. Better a pair of start rite brogues OP! Definitely grandma shoes Blush

TheClitterati · 29/08/2019 23:59

I never expected this thread to be so funny - thanks all. Grin

My feet/ankles are dodgy as so I expect my Hotter days aren't far off. Thankfully DD will have a few years longer before she's wearing Hotters.

Anyone else seeing the shoes all over the Internet now? You're welcome.

AnotherEmma · 30/08/2019 00:02

"DD really wanted these Kickers - they were not available in her size in the shops"

I am a bit nonplussed by this. I can never find shoes in my size (8) in the shops as they don't stock enough and always sell out. So I just find and order them online (sometimes I do it on my iPhone literally as I'm walking out of the shop). Surely that's how it works now?!

Like your DD i was a size 7 when I started high school and then a size 8, shoe shopping was always an absolute nightmare but the internet has made it much more bearable!

(FWIW I think those Hotter shoes are hideous and social suicide and I'm so relieved you're returning them.)

CharityDingle · 30/08/2019 00:33

I know I'm repeating what many have said but please don't let her be set up from day one for teasing about shoes. Get her whatever the other kids are wearing. I wish it wasn't the case, but kids do get picked on for the most trivial of things.

Pythonesque · 30/08/2019 00:43

I moved to the UK in my mid 20s and discovered hotter shoes soon afterwards. I've got a pair of laceups that has been worn on and off for years and years; and clean up well when I start thinking maybe it's time to throw them out!

I was in boys shoes from halfway through year 7 as we had to have black laceups and I'd grown out of the clarks we'd always had up to then. I'll take a comfortable shoe designed for women that actually comes in my size, any day ...

Borntobedifferent · 30/08/2019 01:38

There are times to stand up and not worry about fitting in.

Starting comp isn't one of them. It takes one kid who sees the brand in the shoe when changing for pe or realises their Nan has that shoe for kids to Rio the shit out of her.

Once she has made friends, figured stuff out is time to be yourself but I'm 38 and can still remember the boy who had a briefcase in year 7

SardineJam · 30/08/2019 05:10

Ooh, I actually really like them. Have an air of European chic imo 🙈
If she likes them, let her wear them. I can see the resemblance to Adidas Stan Smith's...
I have never heard of the Hotter brand before and I'm reality how many children will have?

TheClitterati · 30/08/2019 08:38

@AnotherEmma I'm a size 9/43.

These days I mainly buy Wolky's. Expensive but fab quality and they wear really well. Plus I know they will fit and are great for my bad ankle.
