... to ask WTF a VSCO girl is!?

12 year old DD has just announced to me she's a VSCO girl (followed by a peace sign) then gone upstairs to FaceTime...

Google has not helped my lack of understanding. Please, someone far cooler than me, explain in layman's terms!?

Has sksksksksks come from ASMR videos on youtube? Lots of those uploaders make that sound. Or is it something different?

pontiouspilates · 30/08/2019 19:19

This is my DD13! Kanken backpack, Scrunchies, oversize Ts and Sweatshirts, shorts, messy buns, metal straws and shell necklace. She's ticking all the boxes!

ourkidmolly · 30/08/2019 19:38

@ArianaCandelabra
I think you're just virtue signalling.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 30/08/2019 20:05

@JuneFromBethesda Don't even worry about it sksksks

MarshaBradyo · 30/08/2019 20:08

Hadn’t heard of it but much prefer it to the overdone look on there

Divebar · 30/08/2019 20:21

I think it sounds totally fine... every generation has its own tribe. When I was 13 it was all pixie boots and ruffled shirts. It would be nice though if they actually did something towards “ saving the turtles” other than just using metal straws. I bet there’s not much commitment to environmental issues beyond the superficial.

cheesydoesit · 30/08/2019 20:28

It's all just 'old' things with new names isn't it? That look has been around before. Every generation is so derived. I feel so old and passionless saying that.

dementedma · 30/08/2019 20:39

Wow. I think I’ve been VSCO for the last 40 years....apart from the tsk tsk thing which I’ve never heard of.

7salmonswimming · 30/08/2019 20:57

🤦🏼‍♀️ My MIL bought my DD a scrunchy, massive sweatshirt and a pair of Daisy Dukes two weekends ago. I chastised her for the scrunchy, saying it was far too 80s.

My daughter’s GRANDMOTHER is more on-trend than I am.

(My DD isn’t a thin, white California dwelling child, btw. Nowhere near. But I think like most trends, the original version pales into insignificance compared to the bastardized versions which often end up being actually way more cool)

ChippyMinton · 30/08/2019 21:23

DD is NOT VSCO apparently. I just knocked up a velvet scrunchie from an old skirt and she is rocking the messy bun (instructions on Martha Stewart if anyone needs it Smile)

BazzleJet · 30/08/2019 22:11

Is it pronounced like cous cous several times over?

zebrasdontwearbras · 30/08/2019 22:15

It's pronounced "vis-co"

My DD has just told me she's not VSCO, she Kawaii. I googled it, and I really don't think she is. She's VSCO.

BazzleJet · 30/08/2019 22:19

No I mean the sksksksk bit Grin

ArianaCandelabra · 30/08/2019 22:38

I think you're just virtue signalling.

I don't mean to. But at the start of this thread there were lots of comments from people saying it's much nicer than trashy overblown sexiness, that it's good because it favours minimal makeup, thank god for this trend etc. To my mind that goes beyond just acknowledging that teenage girls often adhere to 'tribes' and is actually ascribing a kind of moral virtue to an aesthetic that isn't achievable for most teenagers.

I just think we can be nuanced about this and appreciate that while a certain level of tribalism amongst teenagers is inevitable and fine, it's probably not a good idea to view one group as having some kind of moral superiority because it involves less makeup, when the reality is that it caters almost exclusively to a narrow and already quite privileged group of people.

minou123 · 30/08/2019 22:39

BazzleJet

I think, (and I'm in no way an expert) but you pronounce it:

ssk ssk ssk really rapidly. Dont add an 'ooo' to the 'k'

I think Hmm

minou123 · 30/08/2019 22:43

Just thought if something that could help further BazzleJet
Think of a snake with a speech impediment. But adds a 'k' to the hiss sound

EowynDernhelm · 30/08/2019 22:57

Omg. My DD is a VSKO girl, and I didn't even know about it. We got her Vans for her birthday, from her list. She wears little makeup, messy buns and scrunchies on her wrist. This week she has been searching for a shell necklace. She has had those bottles for years. I guess as trends go, it's harmless enough.

No sksksk yet, or amioop. I suspect that might be my line in the Sand. Be interesting to ask her about this in the morning!

PlatinumBrunette · 30/08/2019 23:09

I love this thread! It’s given me lots of fodder to freak out my older teen today. The best bit was me texting her sksksksksk while she was at work. Major cringe, apparently 😂
Apparently it sounds like a snigger,

zebrasdontwearbras · 30/08/2019 23:27

Oh sorry Bazzle - I've been at the wine again. Terrible role model for the daughter thing, obvs.

sksksksk is pronounced sksksksk obvs. HTH Grin Grin

JustDanceAddict · 30/08/2019 23:30

Weird. I just asked my DD what one was as apparently she was talking to DS about them in car.

beccarocksbaby · 31/08/2019 04:27

The New York Times have weighed in

www.nytimes.com/2019/08/30/style/vsco-girls.html

LynetteScavo · 31/08/2019 06:40

Well that explains why DD wants to sleep on the trampoline!

And there was me thinking it was because DS2s friends crashed out on a trampoline at the after prom party he went to, I'm so out of touch Grin

ForalltheSaints · 31/08/2019 07:01

If minimal or no make up becomes a trend this is a good thing for skin, surely.
