12 year old DD has just announced to me she's a VSCO girl (followed by a peace sign) then gone upstairs to FaceTime...

Google has not helped my lack of understanding. Please, someone far cooler than me, explain in layman's terms!?

✌🏼

I don't really get it. They're wearing all the stuff I wore when I was 15 in 1992. How can that possibly be fashionable?!

PookieDo · 29/08/2019 12:07

Because 90’s fashion is HUGE again right now. Some people are calling it vintage Hmm

And one look they like is pretty hippy beach surfer boho girl mixed with some pop culture

Soccermum256 · 29/08/2019 12:07

Vsco girls are a trash brand of girls trying to be unique and quirky while actually there just as annoying as the millions of others trying to be different

NewtonPulsifer · 29/08/2019 12:19

Thanks Henny. Have googled and my son isn’t one lol. I’m going to catch him out on trends later Grin

Goawayquickly · 29/08/2019 12:23

Trash brand of girls? soccermum delightful way to describe our daughters.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 29/08/2019 12:31

That's a horrrible thing to say Soccermum, really nasty.

Bloody hell, poor girls.

NekoShiro · 29/08/2019 12:32

I hadn't heard of this but it's so cute, like a laid back cali surfer vibe, I saw someone at the start say e-boys are the opposite for boys but e-boys and e-girls are probably closer opposites and thats more of an internet based style than this which looks more real life based, like beachy eco warrior vs video game anime character

PookieDo · 29/08/2019 12:59

What is wrong with people such a horrible way to talk about girls

I hope the trashy slut porn thinking people are perfect virgins

SarahTancredi · 29/08/2019 13:07

Suddenly the mother in law threads make more sense.

Non compliant high achieving high earning girls are no good. It makes their sons look bad. How dare they be the ones having to stay home and raise the kids as their wife earns more.

The ones with their own opinions well they just antagonize their boyfriends dont they.

Thise who wear no make up and baggy clothes should make nore of an effort they are an embarrassment

And the rest are all just slutty dressing tarts out there to lure their precious sons away and trap them.

Just what kind of girl can your sons bring home? Hmm

BlooperReel · 29/08/2019 13:27

Ah so this is what DD (10) is trying to achieve.

She has asked for Vans trainers, pinched some of my metal straws for herself, bought scrunchies with her pocket money and is all about the baggy tshirts.

All falling into place

Doobigetta · 29/08/2019 13:57

Is the “oop” like “ey oop mam” or like “it’s dinner time an I’m avin ooops”?

GilbertMarkham · 29/08/2019 14:22

The Instagram generation seem quite good at celebrating their uniqueness by being clones of each other.

Grin
Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 29/08/2019 14:28

They make a stupid noise like they are calling a cat over, my DD does it frequently. I tell her to stop or all the neighbourhood cats will come running

HennyPennyHorror · 29/08/2019 14:55

Doobi the "Oop* rhymes with goop.

Like "Spaghetti oops" Grin

TitianaTitsling · 29/08/2019 15:08

Sounding v 90s reminding me very much of I think Topanga from boy meets world!

CorBlimeyGovenor · 29/08/2019 15:13

@Doobigetta

pumkinspicetime · 29/08/2019 15:15

Dd mentioned this yesterday and I was all over it, thanks Mumsnet 😀

Coldishfeet · 29/08/2019 15:23

Maybe. Are they trying to pronounce uniqueness though? They're probably trying to differentiate themselves from other groups but very much trying to fit in and identify with the group they've chosen.

AGnu · 29/08/2019 15:39

I read this thread this morning & I've had that sksksksk noise & "and I oop" stuck in my head all day. It's like I'm being haunted by the ghost of a VSCO girl.

I currently know no VSCO girls, AFAIK. The style sounds v like how my niece dresses but I've never heard her express any concern for turtles or make any weird noises. Next time I see her I'll try to remember to bring scrunchies & mention saving turtles to see how she reacts.

Does anyone have links to YouTube videos by actual VSCO girls? I've tried searching but all the ones I've found seem to be parodies or girls turning themselves into VSCO girls, rather than ones who already are. Do VSCO girls even do YouTube or is that not cool anymore?!

I feel old.

ditavonteesed · 29/08/2019 16:00

Me and dd been looking at hydro flasks all afternoon. Anything that helps teens feel a bit more confident and like they belong works for me.

BazzleJet · 29/08/2019 16:22

What's a hydro flask? And please tell me that video of that girl making strange noises is a parody. Please Grin

BazzleJet · 29/08/2019 16:22

PS I'm glad I'm old...

BroomstickOfLove · 29/08/2019 17:51

A hydroflask is a brand of insulated bottle that keeps your drink hot or cold.

ToddlerTwinsAndUnhinged · 29/08/2019 18:05

Clones with no personality.

I'm sure she will grow out of it.

ditavonteesed · 29/08/2019 18:06

In
M afraid to say the and I oop tsksksksk is real, it's burned into my brain forever. Hydro flask is like a chilly bottle but even more expensive 😱
