Aibu to think I am the only person who didn't take out PPI?

With the deadline nearly here and the constant reminders from ads on TV and radio, I feel a slight panic rising that I actually did have it and I'm missing out on thousands. We don't believe we had PPI but made an enquiry as a friend said the same and got some money back but we were told we had no claim. Everyone I know has had some money back. Never had car finance, or loans only mortgage and credit card bit no fees to policies attached. Are there others like us out there ? Have I missed something?

@Redspider1 I never had PPI either and feel quite cheated!!! I had LOADS of storecards etc in the 80s/90s but always paid them off in full each month as I did with credit cards. Never had a loan and the one mortgage I took out didn't include PPI either

I feel quite cheated Grin

dollydaydream114 · 28/08/2019 13:27

For some reason, I declined PPI every time I was offered it even when the lender was really pushy about it. There was a time when I had a lot of different loans and credit cards due to financial difficulties and I was probably pushed towards PPI a dozen times but I always said no as it seemed like a rip-off to me.

Obviously at the time it was the sensible thing to do but, ridiculously I almost wish I'd been taken in by the sales spiel back then as although I'm financially OK these days I'm quite envious of all the little windfalls my friends seem to getting from their claims!

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 28/08/2019 13:27

I've had credit cards but rarely owed money on them
Friends were getting £5,000 or more so I claimed following the advice on the money saving website
I was excited to have my claim upheld and received £10.70Grin

PiggyPokkyFool · 28/08/2019 13:27

I never had it either. Worked in finance and read everything before I signed it, just like my Mum and Dad taught me to do. I also feel a bit left out..Grin

Goawayquickly · 28/08/2019 13:28

A lot of people didn’t ‘take out’ PPI but had it added anyway (I’d said no on one credit card for example but it was still added) so I’d say it’s worth checking. A lot of people were outright lied to as and told they couldn’t get a loan or overdraft without having it regardless of the fact they were self employed or whatever so it would never have paid out and it wasn’t required for the product.

LazyLizzy · 28/08/2019 13:28

I didn't take any out either OP. I worked in insurance decades ago so knew what they were about.

MissDew · 28/08/2019 13:29

We took out PPI but within three years realised it was useless and stopped paying/cancelled the agreement.

I wrote to our old mortgage provider to ask if we were due any compensation and got told no. We could appeal to the Ombudsman if we like but were unlikely to get a different answer.

I'm not that bothered, nothing ventured nothing gained that sort of thing. However, I'm just wondering who genuinely believed they were due some PPI compensation and were told no.

Redspider1 · 28/08/2019 13:31

Oh I feel a bit better now. It's my default response to say no to anything being sold to me. If I had it on a credit card, wouldn't I see a charge on my statement? I only tend to use them occasionally and then repay in full apart from one interest free one that I repaid over a year for a big expense.

I thought I was in your shoes too but remembered I'd had some sort of protection on a mortgage I took out with my ex. So I claimed and got £1600 back which coincided with a big car repair bill :)

WrongKindOfFace · 28/08/2019 13:33

I didn’t have it either. Still, better in my pocket than theirs.

berlinbabylon · 28/08/2019 13:34

I didn't have it except for one storecard where i probably paid about 21p altogether, so not much to claim there!

Redspider1 · 28/08/2019 13:35

That's great Alun We queried decreasing term assurance that we took alongside our repayment mortgage in the 90s but that doesn't count.

I hate debt and have never had a storecard. Only 2 years ago did I start playing around with credit cards (which I pay off in full) to collect points and bonuses.

I also feel cheated haha. Friend of mine got £40,000 a couple of years ago but he is fucking awful with money (e.g. currently paying ~£1500 a month PCP for a Range Rover Vogue) so wasn’t a surprise.

leghairdontcare · 28/08/2019 13:41

Same here. I worked for Lloyds 06-12 so wasn't to keen to buy into the consumer credit bubble. I did have CPI refunded from a credit card I signed up for at Freshers fayre. Payouts are much less though so it was around £250 back.

Totally agree with pp though that in a lot of cases the adding of PPI was hidden from the customer. Our ppi claim team had a list of salespeople and anyone who took out a loan with them would automatically get their ppi refunded, even without evidence of miselling, because they were so corrupt.

Redshoeblueshoe · 28/08/2019 13:45

I've never had it either. I'm going to be so happy when those bloody adverts stop

Redspider1 · 28/08/2019 13:45

leg would that not show as a debit on their statement though? I might be weird but I check my statements.

ThighThighOfthigh · 28/08/2019 13:45

I've just filled in the forms, i don't think i had any but worth a form fill.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 28/08/2019 13:47

I genuinely don't know if I had PPI. I had several credit cards and a personal loan in the early 2000s and I doubt I'd have said yes to PPI if they'd asked. That said, DH had it added to something without knowing so he got about £2000 back last year. I've put in three claims just in case. I don't want anything I'm not owed, so I figured it won't matter if it turns it I didn't have any.

What I'm not sure about is whether I'm supposed t check for absolutely everything - I've done two credit card ones and my loan, but I know I had an Arcadia store card through my work and a credit card and overdraft through my bank. Does that mean I need to do several complaints against the same bank, one for each thing?

Redspider1 · 28/08/2019 13:48

Me too Red

We’ve just had s big pay out on a teeny tiny well managed post student loan.We didn’t ask for PPI, it was hidden. We were clueless until we filled the forms in just in case.

Really angry they did what they did actually. The inference that those with payouts were reckless dim debt ridden consumers is a bit annoying. We would never have needed insurance. Two healthy youngsters with good careers ahead of us.

Redspider1 · 28/08/2019 13:49

I think so Zelda but probably not the best person. Have a look on the Martin Lewis site-Money Saving Expert.

OP posts:
Drogosnextwife · 28/08/2019 13:50

Pretty sure I don't have it. I was going to look into it a while ago, but someone told me it was unlikely I would have any because they stopped selling it when all the ppi scandal surfaced.
I don't have any loans or credit cards before 2011 so apparently unlikely that I am owed anything. Its very disappointing.

Redspider1 · 28/08/2019 13:50

AB when you say hidden do you mean they didn't take a premium? How does it work?

OP posts:
ABy1er · 28/08/2019 13:53

Not sure dh did the claim. We didn’t request it and I think they hid it in the fees. We would never have taken out insurance so it was easy to prove. We were young, Loan was tiny and we were on two good salaries.
