Aibu to think I am the only person who didn't take out PPI?

With the deadline nearly here and the constant reminders from ads on TV and radio, I feel a slight panic rising that I actually did have it and I'm missing out on thousands. We don't believe we had PPI but made an enquiry as a friend said the same and got some money back but we were told we had no claim. Everyone I know has had some money back. Never had car finance, or loans only mortgage and credit card bit no fees to policies attached. Are there others like us out there ? Have I missed something?

We did check a subsequent joint mortgage - nothing.

I do not know if DH has checked the credit card (we have only one and it's in his name). When I had my own, I didn't sign up for any payment protection, and never paid any fees, so there's nothing to return

AuntieStella · 29/08/2019 08:29

I stuck with a basic bank account!

Never bought anything on credit

I'm a bit of an outlier??

Redspider1 · 29/08/2019 09:03

Good luck everyone. Come back and share if you get anything unless you’re too busy cruising round The Caribbean !

Has anybody been successful with claims from HP purchases from the 80s/90s?

Friend said she had HP with PC World and Dixon's (Lombard Finance). Although she would struggle to find any paperwork and deadline has passed.

Ichangedmynamebecauseofmice · 29/08/2019 09:07

I didn’t and I could really do with a refund at the moment Grin

although getting annoyed with people who claimed PPUI and therefore benefited from it then trying to say they were mis sold it

Cookit · 29/08/2019 09:24

Its bank accounts, credit cards, sofa's, catalogues, car finance etc.

Buying a car, sofa, buying from a catalogue on finance are all loans. I haven’t ever done that and I don’t think that’s that unusual.
Credit cards - I assume no PPI. Haven’t ever paid a penny for a credit card and always repay fully monthly so no idea what I’d be refunded on.

Mortgages I do know from my first mortgage they did try to slip on a few extras but I did say no. Last few remortgages these extras weren’t suggested so I guess that the first lot just have been PPI.

I don’t think it’s that unusual not to have any surely.

SweetNorthernRose · 29/08/2019 09:53

@Tippexy if it was a loan it wouldn't necessarily be on a monthly statement, it would have been added to the total repayable at the beginning so could easily have been mistaken for part of the interest.
Plus, these aren't windfalls, they're repayments of what people have already paid out (with interest added, granted)...

FajitasForTea · 29/08/2019 10:02

Was talking to DH about this this morning, he's just remembered a car loan he had right when it was at its height.... Think it is worth applying today? Grin

Redspider1 · 29/08/2019 10:22

Deadline tonight! Sorry for misinformation, I thought Martin Lewis or Jeremy Vine said it was last nightBlush You’ve still got time!

cookit I’m realising from this thread it’s not that unusual to have not had PPI. I’ve just heard quite a few people at work etc say they’ve had lots. I doubt my DFS claim will pay because it was interest free so we would have noticed if the total to pay was higher than the cost of the sofas.

I remember applying for a personal loan with Barclays when I was 20 and struggling to pay rent. They offered me PPI which I declined then they said I couldn't have the loan without the PPI.

I had something similar out of uni. I wanted a loan to consolidate debt and was told taking out PPI would make it much more likely the loan would be offered so it was worth doing even if I didn't need it. He also tried to convince me to take out a bigger loan that I needed and treat myself to "a holiday or something". I said no to that and was fuming about it for years afterwards. Until HSBC paid me the best part of £9k for the trouble - I calmed down then! The loan was for about that amount so I have no idea how they came to such a high £££ but cashed the cheque all the same Smile. In this case, I had no intention of claiming until HSBC wrote to me three times telling me I should. I don't really know why they did that, either, but the form they sent took me 2 mins to complete and they sent the money about 8 weeks later. Nice suprise.

Egg also paid up £2k because they added PPI automatically, without checking with me first. The statements did not refer to it as PPI.

Goawayquickly · 29/08/2019 10:50

Yes missbattenburg Barclays here too, I was mid-sold 5 financial products with barefaced lies. I remember a time when people were being offered cheap money, back when loans and cards were easy to get and my Barclays branch had people trying to sign up customers to things as they queued, then at the counter the threat of closing accounts if you didn’t switch to a packaged one.

MissDew · 29/08/2019 12:07

Hear Me Snore
Thanks. I'm a bit peeved by the pretty much snotty high handed letter we got from our old mortgage lender. They said our PPI was not mis-sold because we say so. It actually states that we should have complained about PPI at the time back then when we sussed the game and cancelled the policy.

They enclosed a leaflet about how to go to the ombudsman but pretty much told us not to bother as the ombudsman will tell us the same as they've told me.

The refund of the payments would not have come to much, but I understand there's a compensation pay out of, 'a couple of grand' for any mis-sold PPI. However, they've said no so that's it.

I've made claims to other lenders and so far been told nope. I've got other claims to other lenders i.e. store card, old credit card etc and I'm waiting for a response. I'm not holding out much hope.

My husband and I took the view that if we lost our jobs we would be in the mire regardless of any pretty much useless mortgage insurance. So, if we weren't insuring our mortgage repayments, anything like credit cards etc just weren't important.

I understand the most important financial liability in life is what ever keeps a roof over your head.

Tooner · 29/08/2019 12:27

I get rather quite annoyed at myself for being so bloody financially savvy even when I was in my 20's that I said no to every attempt at getting me to pay insurance for loans etc.

When I hear of people getting thousands of pounds back I am envious and wish I hadn't have been so savvy which is totally crazy really.

I can't even imagine how many loans etc some people must have got out to be getting so many thousands back now.

Appletina · 29/08/2019 13:10

@missbattenburg was your Egg refund for a credit card or loan?

missbattenburg · 29/08/2019 13:12

@Appletina credit card

GetUpAgain · 29/08/2019 13:54

Yes @Tooner - someone I work with is dreadful with money and was delighted to 'get some PPI' like it was a present, and unrelated to the £££ she spent borrowing money to start with Hmm

usernotfound0000 · 29/08/2019 13:56

My dad always drilled into me that PPI wasn't neccessary, parents weren't well off but always assured me they'd offer help if needed. I am grateful that he taught me this life lesson but feel slightly cheated now!

PinkiOcelot · 29/08/2019 14:00

I haven’t either was gutted when I was told I didn’t have a claim, but when I think about it, I always refused to add it to a loan or card etc.

Saucery · 29/08/2019 14:00

We had a 100% mortgage insurance thing that we stopped after about 10 years. They were careful to say it wasn’t PPI but now I’m wondering.

Tippexy · 29/08/2019 16:34

Is there anything you can do if you can't remember the name of the lender? It's been over six years so isn't on credit file.

Benjispruce · 29/08/2019 17:00

Not sure Tipp I think someone mentioned looking up your credit history.

Benjispruce · 29/08/2019 17:01

Oh is that what you mean? Not sure if a claims company can do a check on your addresses or maybe your bank statements.

Goawayquickly · 29/08/2019 17:09

A claims company can't do anything you can't do. In fact I wonder if they'll be the next scandal with their false claims of PPI databases. I've been told more than once by claims calls you can't do it yourself and they have inside information which is pure bollocks.

dancerdog · 30/08/2019 15:01

Oh! Just got another letter from Santander, another £100, on top of the £86! RICH!

Husband will probably be wishing he had listened to me now

I wish I'd tried a bit harder too - was trying to trace down loans I took out via work/works bank- too complicated to explain- but last resort was to go to my old bank, Clydesdale, to see if they could find evidence in statements covering the period of the loans.

Very nice Clydesdale bank lady took all my details, and called back the next day to say they had no record of me WHATSOEVER. Which is strange as I opened my account with them when I was 16, and stayed with them until I was 28/29. TBH I do think these were interest free, and prob no PPI, but was heading on a short break when she called, no time to argue.

Anyway, this almost offsets the damage I did to my car last week....
