Aibu to think I am the only person who didn't take out PPI?

With the deadline nearly here and the constant reminders from ads on TV and radio, I feel a slight panic rising that I actually did have it and I'm missing out on thousands. We don't believe we had PPI but made an enquiry as a friend said the same and got some money back but we were told we had no claim. Everyone I know has had some money back. Never had car finance, or loans only mortgage and credit card bit no fees to policies attached. Are there others like us out there ? Have I missed something?

If you claim against a bank you still have an account with is there any chance of it impacting you / having your account closed etc?

Geometric · 28/08/2019 16:44

Pretty sure the FCA would have something to say about that! Nationwide explicitly state that that’s not the case on their check page, it’s not mentioned by the others I’ve been on.

LatteLove · 28/08/2019 16:46

I didn’t either, I always refused it and when people tried to push it I got all snotty law student/graduate and told them it wasn’t lawful to force me to enter into another contract to take out the loan/card. Obviously I was right but a windfall would have been nice!

Redspider1 · 28/08/2019 16:49

Shearwater just have a look on the MSE website(Martin Lewis)

@Redspider1 Two loans and a credit card, all with the same bank.

I still had the paperwork for one of the loans (sheer fluke) and I had declined all the extras, but it turns out they added them on anyway.

It's particularly enraging for me as the second loan was taken out to pay off part the first after I got into a mess when I was hurt and unable to work for a while - so the PPI I didn't know I was paying for didn't even pay out anyway!

shearwater · 28/08/2019 16:52

Thanks, spider.

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 28/08/2019 16:52

Thanks Geo, so if I don't know who my various interest free credit agreements were backed by (ie I bought a computer from a shop but the the bank would have lent the money right ?) I can just to a methodical work through ? There's a job for this evening.

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 28/08/2019 16:54

Thanks geometric... might as well send the claims on then...

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/08/2019 16:57

I've submitted my claim and waiting to hear back. I want to check if DH had any but am struggling to know where to start. The Martin Lewis guidance is confusing for probate queries.

ABy1er · 28/08/2019 17:03

puttgehamster not in our case. All with Lloyd’s and they’ve been lovely. Guy dealing with it clearly on our side.

ABy1er · 28/08/2019 17:04

Balance went in to account immediately, was s couple of months ago. Application very quick.

Coquohvan · 28/08/2019 17:06

We claimed every card and mortgage we ever had last year. Always kept account details online in a file.
As we’ve paid of every debt and mortgage this year we were stunned to get cheques to the value of £38k
Biggest was Clydesdale Bank we’ve bank with them since early ‘80’s
£18k
Weren’t sure how many had PPI just added them all to our claim.

Doilooklikeatourist · 28/08/2019 17:11

I don’t think we ever took out PPi , but our son was nagging us about it ( he’s 24 ) and I said he could do the claim if he wanted , and if we got anything back , I’d give him half
He’s put a claim in , we’re still waiting to hear 👍

dancerdog · 28/08/2019 17:13

I got £86.41 this week! Didn't expect anything at all, knowing my luck. A family member got £3500 .

What annoyed me was the fact that Santander - who were the main focus of my inquiries, obviously had info in front of them but didn't supply it to help to help me make my claim, ie

I wrote listing the store cards I thought may have some PPI on them.

They replied with a list of 16 digit account numbers, no card name, and no info on the dates the cards were in use, and a request that I supply details of who the accounts were with, and when......

I finally managed to get someone on the phone, explained that I could hardly make a specific claim without the details. And he said 'oh, let's see now....' and supplied all the cards names and start dates. Which I then added onto their form and sent it back. A waste of everyone's time!

I too made a claim on my husband's behalf, which he very grudgingly finally completed last night. I expect nothing from that either, though.

I was time bound on some of my claims, should have started sooner. However, if would have been pennies, if anything I think as I tended to avoid any insurance things.

Redspider1 · 28/08/2019 18:00

Right, despite DH putting in a claim enquiry last year and getting nothing back, I have put one in via the MSE site. The only time we have ever had finance was interest free credit on 2 DFS sofas about 15 years ago. We would have said no to any PPI but have found some cases online of DFS adding it and it being hidden in delivery or stain guard protection. We have no paperwork as sofas were sold 2 years ago and I clear out paperwork regularly. Don't expect anything but some of you have inspired me. Thanks and good luck to everyone else.

I remember applying for a personal loan with Barclays when I was 20 and struggling to pay rent. They offered me PPI which I declined then they said I couldn't have the loan without the PPI. So being desperate, I took it. I have applied direct to Barclays and supplied every scrap of detail - even a postcode from 30 years ago but what I don't have is an account number and the bank account was closed long ago. Barclays say they have no record of my account. I then went through a claims company and they got the same response. Martin Lewis got my hopes up!

Same here. I worked for Lloyds 06-12 so wasn't to keen to buy into the consumer credit bubble. I did have CPI refunded from a credit card I signed up for at Freshers fayre. Payouts are much less though so it was around £250 back.

Totally agree with pp though that in a lot of cases the adding of PPI was hidden from the customer. Our ppi claim team had a list of salespeople and anyone who took out a loan with them would automatically get their ppi refunded, even without evidence of miselling, because they were so corrupt.

That's shocking lg. I wish the FSC had ordered the banks to refund the missold PPI themselves instead of leaving the onus on customers to ask. Would have been fairer and simpler surely?

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 28/08/2019 21:26

I've applied to every credit card I ever had, and to the bank and building societies that I had accounts with - not a bean...🙄

Misty999 · 28/08/2019 21:37

Same here never had it.

Woodlandwitch · 28/08/2019 21:38

No PPI here either despite taking quite a few loans when I was in my younger years.

Potentially @jente - although speaking for Lloyds systems I'm not sure how it would be feasible technically. Especially on historic loans.

I had the exact same situation - 25 yrs ago, he was a obnoxious little shit the personal loan advisor. I suspect I won't get anything back but I've submitted a claim and will wait and see.

BEDinhalfanhour · 28/08/2019 21:49

MadisonAvenue I woukd try again..maybe the goodwill gesture was a cover up by the bank?

Santander are the only bank that will not accept a PPI check as a complaint.

I have spent 3 hours in total trying to get through to them yesterday & today.

Still no luck.

ragged · 28/08/2019 21:51

Me neither. I never took out any loans. Or any bank account with any insurance 'features'. Nor bought anything on installments; never paid charges on any credit card or for overdraft. It was in the news constantly at least from 1992 (when I came to UK) that these PP insurance schemes were bad value. How did so many people get caught? DH didn't know endowment mortgages were bad value in 1999, I suppose he missed hearing something I thought anyone paying attention would have known I suppose.

Littlechocola · 28/08/2019 21:53

Isn’t the deadline tomorrow? So too late?
