Aibu to think I am the only person who didn't take out PPI?

With the deadline nearly here and the constant reminders from ads on TV and radio, I feel a slight panic rising that I actually did have it and I'm missing out on thousands. We don't believe we had PPI but made an enquiry as a friend said the same and got some money back but we were told we had no claim. Everyone I know has had some money back. Never had car finance, or loans only mortgage and credit card bit no fees to policies attached. Are there others like us out there ? Have I missed something?

Midnight deadline. Takes minutes.

BenjiB · 28/08/2019 21:58

We never had loans apart from the mortgage. We had no idea we had PPI And got back £5k.

PickAChew · 28/08/2019 22:00

Hah! SIL was hassling DH to keep checking if he was owed any. He gave up explaining that he never took any out.

I spent about £100 on some once. Buggered if I can be arsed.

PavlovaFaith · 28/08/2019 22:01

I've got my fingers crossed for my DM who paid PPI on a mortgage for 20 odd years and didn't really know what it was.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 28/08/2019 22:01

I never got it. I saw it for the con it was. I'm too clever for my own good!

ExpletiveDelighted · 28/08/2019 22:03

I did have it once, for a mortgage, but I don't really think it was mis-sold, I did understand it and the premiums weren't much, I've put in a claim just in case and have also put one in for another mortgage just in case. I always avoided it otherwise, my parents did a good job at teaching me to read the small print.

Actually there was one other time, I got collared into signing up for a storecard that had it but when my first statement came with its 75p PPI premium I paid it off, cut up the card and cancelled it. Not bothering with that one.

PinkSubscriber · 28/08/2019 22:03

I was sure I hadn’t had it as I always declined it. Initially when it all kicked off being able to claim PPI. I managed to claim back £360.

However recently I had another go through a claim company and was amazed when in total I was compensated for 6 different loans and credit cards for £11k! I was in shock. All claims went to the ombudsman and they agreed by compensation.

Elieza · 28/08/2019 22:06

I only had it once, my choice when my job looked ropey, and I wasn’t missold. So no claim for me. Won’t miss the adverts though. Wonder what shite will be next. There’s always something. Trips or falls yada yada, yawn, wish they’d bog off.

MollyButton · 28/08/2019 22:07

I didn't either - I do feel a bit fed up as I deliberately avoided it as I did my research and realised it wasn't a good deal.

Deelish75 · 28/08/2019 22:11

I turned down PPI on a credit card. The bastards still added it, it was only when I checked my first statement I saw it, contacted them and cancelled the credit card. If you say you turned it down you may still have been charged.

pumkinspicetime · 28/08/2019 22:13

DH and I always refused it, rather wish we hadn't bothered now!

Bluesrunthegame · 28/08/2019 22:17

I didn't have it, I only had credit cards and none of mine had it. I was too scared of debt to take out any big loans.

theSnuffster · 28/08/2019 22:26

I've never had PPI. I had a store card 13 years ago that I used once the day I signed up for it, then paid off in full the next month. No mortgages, loans, finance.

BMW6 · 28/08/2019 22:38

I never had PPI either. Always refused as was Civil Servant so job 99.9% secure. Never took out loans, but had credit card.

DH (met and married late in life) wasn't so financially secure or savvy - got over 4k from Nat West and his claim was instigated by them!

Very nice windfall - paid for demolition of "garden room" and rebuilt as utility room, so added value to house.

He was told he HAD to have PPI when he applied for a couple of small loans from Nat West......

SweetNorthernRose · 28/08/2019 22:46

I was sure I didn't have PPI as always refused it when asked (another civil servant with a secure job) but made an enquiry to my bank anyway on the off chance as I knew the deadline was approaching. Turns out I had it on a graduate loan, which had obviously been added without my knowledge. Banks used to have ways to dupe people into having it...quoting monthly repayments including the ppi so you wouldn't automatically know it was added, and not directly asking you if you wanted it. I'm certain that's what happened with mine...claim is in at the moment so we'll see!

Littlechocola · 28/08/2019 22:47

@Benjispruce thanks. Sorted.
I don’t know if I have ppi. I lived from catalogues because I had to at the time.
I’ve done a few just in case but name has changed twice and I’ve moved a million times.
Nothing to lose I suppose.

bluechameleon · 28/08/2019 22:55

I have spent the past few years ignoring all the adverts and cold calls then panicked a couple of weeks ago that I was missing out. I did the Martin Lewis checker but I've heard back from one bank so far and I didn't have PPI which is unsurprising but still disappointing. I'm not holding out much hope for the other one.

zen1 · 28/08/2019 22:56

@BEDinhalfanhour I got through to Santander after waiting half an hour just after their phone lines opened on Bank Holiday (wasn’t expecting them to be open on BH) to clarify what to do as their website said you had to wait for the results of the check (which would obviously take 6 weeks) before putting in a complaint. Nice woman who answered the phone said don’t worry about checking, just put a complaint in anyway, even if you weren’t sure if / when you had any products with them.

GetUpAgain · 28/08/2019 23:00

I always refused it, did some claims anyway just in case I'd been cheated, and guess what? I got NOTHING WHATSOEVER.

Tippexy · 28/08/2019 23:02

YANBU - we all knew back then that PPI wasn’t necessary but it didn’t stop those with limited sense signing up for it - and now they’re getting these windfalls! Hmm

And once more, those who are sensible and research their finances end up with no reward!

Charley50 · 28/08/2019 23:03

I didn't get any either and I feel gutted too!

Tippexy · 28/08/2019 23:06

The point is I read everything. Diligently. But they still caught me with PPI, which is exactly the point about these claims - it was most definitely being missold if I didn't spot it. I still had the paperwork for the loan and I still couldn't see it in the terms!

But didn’t you read your monthly statements?

Speakercube · 28/08/2019 23:09

Just remembered had a lease car years ago where I had to pay so much a month but that can't have had PPI surely as that would've been covered by work/taken the car away if I could've paid it? Just thinking as someone mentioned car loan.

I tried to do the Experior credit check on mse site and although all my details were correct it wouldn't do it for me! It said that it sometimes happens and they can't do anything about for security reasons. Advised checking my details were correct which I did.

Autumnintheair · 28/08/2019 23:11

Would it be possible to have loan, default on loan and still have ppi?

LittleAndOften · 28/08/2019 23:16

I absolutely declined PPI when offered. However it seems they ticked the box anyway. The first time it happened apparently was when I was at uni, I had a student account at the time with my bank and turned out they'd decided I needed PPI on my credit card even though I had no job! When I claimed, stating I'd been in full time education (the clue being in the name 'student account') my application was initially turned down, then the ombudsman forced my bank to stop being a knob.

Then I found out they'd also taken it out on my behalf for two loans I'd had in the noughties. This time I distinctly remember turning it down as I was a teacher and felt job security was not an issue. Made no difference, they'd done it anyway.
Seems banks can't be trusted. Who knew?!
