AIBU to think dogs should be banned from parks?

They're everywhere, crapping, barking, smelling one another's arses and fighting. Then there are those jumpy ones trying to get a lick of a child's face before bounding off to piss up the nearest tree. Not everyone likes dogs and they spoil the park for kids. I'd love to see them allocated their own area away from the rest of the park where like minded dog owners can all hangout together picking up their pet's turds and convincing each other that "he's usually so gentle". AIBU??

Parks in general or play parks?

BossAssBitch · 27/08/2019 11:46

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin

I hate everything about dogs and thanks to twattish dog owners, who don't control their hideous animals, so does ds

Nah that’ll be because your DS has learnt from your unreasonable hatred of dogs Hmm

PookieDo · 27/08/2019 11:47

Play parks where I live have fenced in equipment areas

The rest of the park is used for:
Sunbathing
Teenagers drinking booze
People riding bikes
People exercising & boot camps
People walking dogs
People eating their lunch

Children do not have and have never had exclusive use of any green space. Play equipment and paddling pools - agree kids only no pets. Grass and trees - ridiculous

jcorbyn · 27/08/2019 11:48

I've bought a National Trust membership just so that I can take my family for picnics without the threat of dogs jumping all over us. YANBU.

Whosorrynow · 27/08/2019 11:49

I think we need a proper system of licensing for dogs, the license money could fund areas where dogs can have free rein.
I would like to see restrictions on the numbers of dogs per household and some way of restricting larger dogs, have other countries managed to do this successfully?

Chuchyduck · 27/08/2019 11:49

YABU i don’t enjoy hearing kids screeching when I’m on a lovely walk with my dog.

Whosorrynow · 27/08/2019 11:51

This isn't a thread about children, this is a thread about dogs, why does everyone keep bringing children into it?

LeysaV · 27/08/2019 11:53

Oh get over yourself

This would mean only the very wealthy, or the MC with a huge park like garden, could have dogs .

londonloves · 27/08/2019 11:53

There should be more areas in parks where dogs aren't allowed off the lead, and it should be enforced. I don't think it's ok for massive dogs to be bounding up to toddlers.

LeysaV · 27/08/2019 11:53

I don't even have a dog by the way so no vested interest.

Cherrysoup · 27/08/2019 11:55

Yabu. Let’s ban screaming tantrumming kids and feral bloody teenagers who swing the swings up and over the bar so they’re unusable. Oh, and the ones whose parents use me and my dogs as childcare while they chill out stuffing their picnics down their gullets when I’m just trying to walk my dogs. Again, YABU.

Actually, me and my dh had a highly entertaining half an hour last week with 2 little ones (whose mum was miles away with 2 others, we could easily have kidnapped both the boys with us!). They wanted to help us train, so we taught them to keep the dogs in a sit, make them wait, send them on, retrieve and use hand signals and voice to move them round. The boys were so chuffed with themselves!

I agree, actually, OP, some dogs are a total pain, but that’s the owner’s fault for not training them and thinking that their dogs are more important than other park users. I get extremely riled when other dogs are allowed to hound over and harass my dogs. And yes, dear lord, you choose to own a dog, bloody well pick up after them!! 💩

PookieDo · 27/08/2019 11:55

@Whosorrynow

You mentioned children Hmm
You said they may well one day pay council tax but a dog never will

I live next to a national trust property and I walk my dog all over the dog areas regularly. There are dog free areas where you can’t take a dog. So there is something for everyone!

WhyBirdStop · 27/08/2019 11:56

I don't have a dog and I'm not really a dog person but even I think YABU, he's there should be more emphasis/enforcement on not picking up after your dog, and probably a law that states dogs must be on a lead unless in a designated off lead area, but children are noisy, annoying, come up to you unbidden drop things, make a mess, randomly throw up etc, so using your argument they should be banned too.

Benjispruce · 27/08/2019 11:59

Yabu. They should be on a lead unless in a wild / Fields type park, which is where I walk my dog. Owners should be responsible like me.

HauntedPinecone · 27/08/2019 12:01

not animals that some humans choose to impose on said society with varying degrees of inconvenience to other members of the society itself

Humans are animals. None has greater right to the planet than any other. In fact, given that we are the species who are fucking up this place we call home, maybe we should be banned?

Chuchyduck · 27/08/2019 12:02

The reason why people keep mentioning children is because the poster said that dogs spoil the park for kids. I get sick of picking up sweet wrappers and juice bottles after other people’s kids, but at the end of the day, the parks are public spaces and it’s live and let live.

ClaraThePigeon · 27/08/2019 12:02

With a quick Google I can also find studies saying that the opposite is true, and that people with certain beliefs are more likely to suffer from a number of mental health issues.

ClaraThePigeon · 27/08/2019 12:02

Sorry. Wrong thread.

LolaSmiles · 27/08/2019 12:04

I agree.

Some people seem to think the whole world should cater to their child and their wishes. There are some inconsiderate and ridiculous parents and there are some irresponsible dog owners. Most of the time the sensible rational people understand that it's perfectly possible to rub along with others just fine without expecting the world to bendto yourwhims.

beccarocksbaby · 27/08/2019 12:06

Can we ban people whose kids run up to my (on the lead) dog and start petting her with no warning or permission?

Also people who drop litter

Also people who scream "JUCINNNNNNNNDA COME HERE POPPET" across the park instead of getting off their asses and talking to their child.

Please can we ban people who think the park and outdoor spaces are just for them and their precious babies.

Vilanelle · 27/08/2019 12:07

Should dogs just stay in then? Perhaps you should consider how annoying your children are to some people

PookieDo · 27/08/2019 12:10

I picked up litter all around benches last night from a lovely park because I was worried it might hurt my dog. Families had been over there all day the bins were a bit full so it was also all on the ground. Some teenagers watched me pick it all up. There was no visible dog shit. People leaving dog poo on the ground is very annoying but where I live and walk every day x 2 I see far more litter than I see dog poo

People who go out on a bank holiday Monday to a tourist destination are going to see inconsiderate mess from humans and dogs. Or perhaps once every few months on a nice day for a picnic. Those of us who walk every single day and night around various parts of the UK can honestly tell you that human mess is a far larger issue

LolaSmiles · 27/08/2019 12:11

beccarocksbaby
Can we also ban any parents who manage just fine to keep their 2/3 year old from running into the road, but when it comes to preventing their child running up to unknown dogs yelling 'DOGGIE!!!' and grabbing the dog's faces, suddenly they couldn't possibly do that because their child is only a toddler, that's what young children do, they can't be reasoned with and they can't help running wherever they like.

WednesdaySpinner · 27/08/2019 12:11

I am a dog owner and I do agree with you. I wouldn't let my dog off the lead if I couldn't trust her not to run up to people. It doesn't matter whether she would jump up or not, some people are scared of dogs and some just don't want to be approached by one and that's fine. YABU for suggesting that people can't take their well behaved dog to a park!

The comparison to children comes about because the OP hasn't mentioned anything about screaming, whinging children who are not controlled by their parents. I was sunbathing in a park over the weekend and a toddler ran over and tipped a whole bucket of water over my friends face - his mum found it hilarious Hmm. Parks should be for everyone, animals and people, as long as they can all behave themselves!
