AIBU to think dogs should be banned from parks?

They're everywhere, crapping, barking, smelling one another's arses and fighting. Then there are those jumpy ones trying to get a lick of a child's face before bounding off to piss up the nearest tree. Not everyone likes dogs and they spoil the park for kids. I'd love to see them allocated their own area away from the rest of the park where like minded dog owners can all hangout together picking up their pet's turds and convincing each other that "he's usually so gentle". AIBU??

Yanbu

I think as a nation we are dreadful as regards controlling dogs.

In the US the difference is stark. Everywhere you go if there are dogs they are on leads and under control. It makes beaches, NP and parks so much more enjoyable. It’s safer and better for wildlife too.

But then we have a bigger sense of entitlement in the UK and we’re lazier too. I think Americans walk and do more in their parks whilst we seem to sit/ and expect dogs to exercise themselves.

CheeryB · 27/08/2019 12:12

YANBU we need more dog parks more dog wardens and more fines for dog owners who think its ok to let them run riot off lead and not pick up the mess they leave behind

I agree with this. We have a section, about a quarter, of our local park in which dogs are not allowed. It's fenced and clearly signposted, but guess what? People ignore it and take their dogs in both on and off lead because, well, it doesn't apply to them does it?
If you point the signs out (which I have done only once) you get a glare and a gobful of insults.

mumto2teenagers · 27/08/2019 12:16

YABU - parks are for everyone to enjoy not just children.

I agree that owners should always pick up dog mess and dogs need to be kept under control.

meditereb · 27/08/2019 12:16

People who compare dogs (animals) to kids (humans) is doing my head in ! You were a kid once ! That's why humanity is going the way it does no respect for human beings !

Fuma · 27/08/2019 12:30

@hauntedpinecone, agreed that humans are fucking up the planet. Pet ownership is just one of the ways they are doing this. Pets are an unnecessary and damaging aspect of human activity.

Fuma · 27/08/2019 12:32

@meditereb it happens all the time on these threads. There does seem to be a sizeable amount of people who view children as an owned extension of human activity ie not really part of human society, in the same way that dogs are.

Yes, and my parents taught me not to run around shrieking at people, not to approach unknown animals, not to run up to dogs and generally how to be responsible and considerate. My parents wouldn't have laughed in the situation from WednesdaySpinner. They'd have told me off for it. My parents wouldnt do what I've seen on MN And argue they couldn't possibly keep little Lola from running and grabbing a dog's face because she's just a child.

The major problem is that the unreasonable, irresponsible people in life seem to think the whole world should cater for them and they have no responsibility to others as part of being a member of society. That includes irresponsible dog owners, but also includes people who think that their children are some sort of special unique case who should be allowed to bras obnoxious, disruptive and inconsiderate as they like.

Meanwhile all the responsible and considerate people (dog owners and parents) are getting on just fine with life and rubbing along with others in parks just fine.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 27/08/2019 12:43

YANBU.

Dogs off the lead or ones that are poorly controlled can be frightening and dangerous.

I say this as an RVN so I do actually love dogs.

And the people comparing an out of control dog to an out of control toddler are being ridiculous.

Dogs should be on leads at all times in public places and certain breeds should be muzzled.

ABy1er · 27/08/2019 12:44

To be fair I’ve seen very few disruptive out of control children in parks, beaches and National Parks. Dogs on the other hand, is a whole different ball game, it’s a frequent occurance.

What have you been smoking?

joystir59 · 27/08/2019 12:47

I'd much prefer children to be banned. They are much more out of control as a class of beings than dogs. And human mess in our seaside town beaches and parks after the bank holiday has to be seen to be believed.

Whosorrynow · 27/08/2019 12:48

I agree that strictly speaking dogs aren't necessary (aside from their roles as working dogs of course) but I think dogs can bring benefits to human lives via their companionship etc

MagicKingdomDizzy · 27/08/2019 12:49

Sorry I misread the title. They shouldn't be banned, but it should be a legal requirement for dogs to be on a lead and under control in a park.

CheeryB · 27/08/2019 12:51

It's always the same on these dog threads. No reasonable defence so try to think of an attack and fail miserably. Not all dog owners obviously. Just the ones who recognise themselves.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/08/2019 12:52

I'd love it if we had dog parks, the problem is it wouldn't stop random dog shit because some dog owners don't care.

I don't think dogs should be segregated though, most dogs at lovely. Where I live the PCSO's ignore all the badly behaved dogs and litter louts and wander off to pick up yellow sticker good from M&S. That I would like to change.

ABy1er · 27/08/2019 12:52

I don’t see that re children at all and live in a tourist area.

Children don’t run through picnics, bark, corner and run at people on walks. They don’t run through and chase nesting birds and lambs barking aggressively. They don’t leave excrement and excrement bags everywhere. They don’t sink their teeth and draw blood warranting anti bs. They don’t rip into coats and cause damage.....

All the above has happened to us. Some of it is a frequent occurrence.

As I said it’s hugely different in the US. Why can’t we be the same?

Fuma · 27/08/2019 12:53

Yes, they benefit the person who owns them. But that is the extent of their beneficial effect.

areyoubeingserviced · 27/08/2019 12:54

I agree Op
My six year old niece was bitten by a dog last week. To make matters worse, she was in my care so I felt absolutely awful. The owner of said dog muttered the immortal words ‘she doesn’t bite’ and then the dog proceeded to bite my niece.
We spent that afternoon at the hospital
I think that there should be designated dog parks

Whosorrynow · 27/08/2019 12:54

Dog owners will argue that their pets needs time off lead in order to have happy fulfilling and flourishing lives
those of us who prefer not to be inconvenienced by dogs will argue that the needs and desires of dogs are incompatible with the needs and desires of humans
who should take preference?

MagicKingdomDizzy · 27/08/2019 12:55

joystir59

You're being ridiculous. The physical injury an out of control dog can cause is horrific.

And the mess you're talking about is down to the (adult) parents to sort out.

ABy1er · 27/08/2019 12:55

Yes those words were muttered before and after to us when my ds had his bottom bitten by a dog.

LolaSmiles · 27/08/2019 12:58

It's always the same on these dog threads. No reasonable defence so try to think of an attack and fail miserably. Not all dog owners obviously. Just the ones who recognise themselves.
Most of the dog threads seem to be responsible dog owners proposing resepectful and sensible conduct from ALL people. That means being a responsible dog owner AND that parents don't whine about the fact they couldn't possibly stop their child running up to an unknown dog.

Hardly rocket science. Parks are there for lots of people. Lots of people will do lots of different things and some will suit me, others won't. It's ridiculous calling for anything that doesn't fit how I want it to be to be banned.

Alsohuman · 27/08/2019 12:59

We walk ours early in the morning and early evening when there are no children around. Most dogs don’t get enough exercise on lead and allowing to run free in an open space is the only way to allow it. There’s a children only section in our local park and I never see dog shit. I did see one poor woman who’d run out of bags picking it up with dock leaves - needless to say, I gave her a handful of bags.

Whosorrynow · 27/08/2019 12:59

@AreYoubeing
A dog attack is extremely traumatic, were you able to report this to the police, are they going to take action?
How is your niece?

ABy1er · 27/08/2019 13:00

Do kids run up to dogs though?🤔IME it’s the other way round.
