to dislike Extinction Rebellion

I live in farming village. We are getting in harvest.
But today on village green extinction rebellion has decided to have a party with drums, loud music and a megaphone. Green is right opposite care home for elderly.
I asked them, who are you protesting? There are no corporations here. Everyone is aware of environment as we grow your food.
They have been very rude, refusing to turn down noise despite disabled residents with migraines suffering.
They made me very upset talking about how England could grow own food and have lower footprint if not so many people (I’m an immigrant) looking at me like I should leave country.

XR are not trying to recruit people to their cause. They don't give a monkey's fuck whether you recycle 10% more domestic waste.
They want to piss you off. They want you to be inconvenienced. They want you to get up and start shouting. This is the beginning of a new way of living - it's either climate catastrophe (which is probable) or IF WE ARE LUCKY a total change in society norms: No more flying - No more meat - No more plastic polyester clothing - One child per family - No cheap poundland disposable lifestyles etc.
If their protests are pissing you off, you are going to be apoplectic with rage when carbon releasing products / activities are banned or taxed to fuck.
It is not this group of fake wool waring, patchouli smelling, quinoa eating middle managers who are responsible, they just have the luxury of missing work for a few weeks to try and wake you lot up.

Changes are coming.

They want to piss you off. They want you to be inconvenienced. They want you to get up and start shouting

Well then, if that the case
SCREW THEM
Then they get absolutely no respect from me, and when it comes up that they will have laws changed so protesting is harder (which is happening in Aus), you think they will have people in their corner, the same people they openly say to piss off? Hell no, lock them up, get them outta my way.

Their message is irrelevant to if their only motive is to piss people off. Thats a bunch of toddlers having a tantrum.
They dont deserve to be listened too, they are arrogant know it alls who only have slogans and no solutions

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 13/10/2019 08:04

Ridiculous ineffective virtue signalling movement, full of middle class out of touch hypocrites.

Yes something needs to be done about climate change, this is not it.

LessonsEarned · 13/10/2019 08:41

I can't help but chime in.

Walked passed ER in our small town last weekend. There is a aggressive, superior and smug yet ignorant vibe about them. Distinctly comfortable middle class (as am I) but with that air of contempt towards those who don't jump on their particular bandwagon who are branded uneducated and what not.

Anyhow, the ER 'activists' were all lying on the ground dressed up like casualties and shouting all sorts of slogans. Fine, whatever, but it came across as SO pretentious. And worse they were handing out masses of glossy colour printed leaflets. They gave our family 3 leaflets Hmm so that's a bit of a crappy waste there. And why not use recycled paper or be more innovative than handing out bloody leaflets? Not quite so clever after all.

I believe OP and wouldn't be surprised if they are bloody xenophobes.
They published other website: "most prison officers are black and do not wish to give you a hard time" as advice to those who get themselves arrested. www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-48147915 Bloody racist comment, but not surprising at all smug idiots.

I'd like to know who founded ER and how ethically they operate. Their campaigning style feels very male, aggressive and entitled without empathy somehow.

And with regards to artificial meat..... Surely producing, marketing and selling man made meat is ONLY in the interest of big food corporations. They'll happily add it to their list of artificial processed crappy and synthetic foods and control what humanity eats. I wouldn't touch that stuff.

Also, who needs to eat meat every day? Surely that's unhealthy. Just eat a plant based varied diet with fish and meat thrown in occasionally, job done.

I have no time ER, even the name is utterly pretentious and purposefully emotive. Can't stand them.

Gennz18 · 13/10/2019 08:44

Lol at Citizen’s Assembly

Wtaf do they think Parliament is?

I have zero time for ER, in my view they are anti-capitalist group in search of a cause.

I also take a dim view of people telling kids we’re all doomed and going to die horribly imminently as a result of man made climate change. Be the adult FFS

Mimishimi · 13/10/2019 09:37

Who is having boatloads of children though? Birthrates across the world have dropped to all time lows.

LessonsEarned · 13/10/2019 10:13

I think history will look back on them with fondness and admiration ....and ask why the rest of us did not go out and support them?, when we could have made a difference, before it was too late.

Grin

I'm sure they'd love to be admired and looked upon fondly, lol though I don't believe they will. They sell a narrative based on fear (extinction) and aggression (rebellion). Instead of rebelling and being dramatic, please do come up with solutions, be part of the problem solving. Instead they cause misery for ordinary citizens and their media e.g. glossy thick paper leaflets are anything but green. Hmm Also..... who is at risk of extinction? It's such a simplistic and populist term. After all, if human were to be extinct, the planet could recover really rather nicely, no?

I'm all for supporting environmental issues and do so, after all, I know the science. However there is something weird about ER, maybe it is the fact that many of their 'activists' are actually paid actors. And it's so glossy and PR driven, it's all a bit fake and rather post modern and therefore sadly quite backwards in their outlook and approach to campaigning. It's certainly not grassroots or anything.

LessonsEarned · 13/10/2019 10:17

*plus I'm shocked though not surprised at ER 'activists' muppets buying shed loads of plastic from Pret a manager and leaving it all on the streets to be cleaned up the council. Such spoiled and rude behaviour.

CurryAndCobra · 13/10/2019 10:20

They're just a bunch of twats. Ignore and they wil move on. They organised a protest in my town and no one turned up. They tried to talk to us normal folks and they got told off. Haven't seen the likes of them after that.

worlybear · 13/10/2019 13:26

Saw them in London on Weds.
They can all fuck off.

Typooo · 14/10/2019 04:36

They want to piss you off. They want you to be inconvenienced. They want you to get up and start shouting

Haha, yes!

A world without humans would be a lot better. But it would be a pretty horrible time for us while it happens. And I'm sure Donald Trump will still be bobbing about at the end of it like the floater he is.

I'm all for supporting environmental issues and do so, after all, I know the science.

What should we do about it then? How can we make the governments of the world take the action that is needed?

CurryAndCobra · 14/10/2019 09:49

"How can we make the governments of the world take the action that is needed?"

By blocking regular people going to work, getting to their health appointments etc? How come these twats don't protest during the weekends?

Aprillygirl · 14/10/2019 10:51

Most of them would have locked up in lunatic asylums not so long ago. They are doing nothing for their cause and I hate the bastards.

AlwaysCheddar · 14/10/2019 17:16

Ironically they are making the environment worse - traffic jams, piles of their (non recyclable) waste.... twats.

sophiasnail · 14/10/2019 17:54

I think their recent antics have alienated a lot of moderate folk who would otherwise be much more sympathetic to their cause.

TonTonMacoute · 14/10/2019 18:42

YANBU, they are a perfect example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. Most of their claims are wildly overstated and inaccurate - even the IPCC are not making the extreme claims that XR are making, and for which there is virtually no real evidence.

There are growing questions about their political motives who are funding them, and their extreme actions risk alienating a lot of people, except a whole bunch of white middle class middle aged people on a guilt trip who seem to love them, possibly because they hope that 'young people' will think they are very right on.

Lovelydovey · 14/10/2019 18:45

Loved the mini protest they had in pret in the City today because they weren’t allowed to use the staff toilets - a bit entitled if you ask me!
