To wonder if some posters realise some people lie on threads?

So when people say how much they earn, how much they spend on a holiday, how handsome their DH is, do you realise that some people will not be truthful?
I ask because I see comments all the time about how well-off most MN are. I have been to meet ups, and most MN are pretty ordinary women. Lovely, funny and kind, but not super wealthy with amazing homes and husbands, just ordinary. Of course there will be some women on MN who are very well-off but they are not the norm here.

To seem more Interesting AWitcheshat particularly if they have unhappy lives

SimplySteveRedux · 22/08/2019 20:51

Some posters are men!

Rumbled Sad

lljkk · 22/08/2019 20:57

I presume most of it is false unless it's well and truly too boring to be imaginary.

NoTheresa · 22/08/2019 21:06

I actually doubt whether people lie to the extent some of you are suggesting. It would be too much like a chore, fit one thing. It’s much more interesting to participate if you are the real you. If you make mundane stuff up, such as how rich you are etc, it says a whole lot about the sort of weirdo you are. I wouldn’t like to live inside that head, frankly!

However, I do remember a thread of the “Show Me Your. Bedroom” ilk. It was hilarious because some posters were caught out using photos from the internet. One person was daft enough to post a hotel bedroom and claim it as her own. She was caught out pretty quickly and slunk off.

I wish the attractive men using Mumsnet would make themselves known. It might be interesting to start a flirty thread😉

NoTheresa · 22/08/2019 21:06

...for one thing

ThinkGlow · 22/08/2019 21:06

I live in a detached London house and spend 94 hours a week volunteering. My BMI is 2 and I do a full Waitrose food shop for £1.19 a week; this feeds two adults, my twins and my thoroughbred horses.

I never fib.

Lockheart · 22/08/2019 21:07

Lots of people lie, exaggerate, embellish etc.

I sometimes change small details to avoid becoming identifiable, but nothing major that would affect it. I.e. my car is blue when it's actually red.

Passthecherrycoke · 22/08/2019 21:07

Your BMI is TWO?

Fat cow

TrainspottingWelsh · 22/08/2019 21:10

I always think that if you’re used to having something, you don’t need to tell the world/ boast needlessly. Either it doesn’t exist or it screams new money. You don’t see threads full of people saying they have running water and electric because we all take it for granted.

Obviously it’s different for someone to post celebrating their achievement in eg losing weight, or to share a relevant experience that implies wealth. But done needlessly it just comes across as try hard. Or if I’m kind perhaps someone with miserable circumstances needing to live out a fantasy.

Personally I always ensure my pilot leaves the helicopter somewhere unobtrusive so I’m not the subject of a parking thread.

NoTheresa · 22/08/2019 21:11

Oh, and I remember a woman who posted photographs of her house at Christmas. Lots of people were oohing and aahing but the house was a hideous horror of white furniture and umpteen fake white trees. I really hope it was made up fakery or I pity her complete absence of taste.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2019 21:12

I think people tell the best bits of them and not the bits that will cause huge judgement on here

I couldn’t budget £30 a week or whatever on food cos I’m lazy AF but I wouldn’t go on to the budget food threads to say this

The “show me your pet” threads always reveal a lot of really ugly and messy beds and living rooms

BMW6 · 22/08/2019 21:12

I expect some people lie because their real lives are pretty shite, but that just makes me feel sorry for them.

I despise scammers on here though.

Zackly · 22/08/2019 21:13

A sizeable portion of the posters really getting stuck in to other posters are men IMO. Nowhere near all of them, of course. But sometimes it’s really obvious.

CruCru · 22/08/2019 21:16

I hate the ones where people talk about how much they eat / how much they weigh / what dress size they are. If people ate as little as some people say they do, they wouldn’t survive. Threads where people say “Well a size 10 isn’t actually slim!” are probably quite triggering for people with eating disorders (and really annoying).

ImNotHappyaboutitPauline · 22/08/2019 21:18

I think posters make up all sorts of shite tbh and I take a lot of what I read here with a very large pinch of salt. Saying that though, a lot of it (I think especially around income) is down to what each person perceives to be super wealthy or an amazing home, fancy holiday or whatever. For example that thread about who earns 29.5k and how they do has largely what I would consider fairly ordinary occupations and salary ranges but to some posters those are jobs and incomes they can't imagine having.

On the other hand I've seen some posters say they live and raise a family most comfortably on very low incomes eg 12/14k. Then there are the posters who declare themselves poor because they "only" had a camping holiday in the UK and haven't changed their car for 5 years! It's all very subjective and probably healthy not to take any of it too seriously.

ilovesooty · 22/08/2019 21:18

Well fuck me sideways with a parsnip. I'd never thought of that. Grin

NoTheresa · 22/08/2019 21:18

The “show me your pet” threads always reveal a lot of really ugly and messy beds and living rooms

As do some of the “What are you wearing today?” threads where photographs are asked for too. The bedrooms are almost all tiny, bland and beige, with stained beige carpets and Next-type decor. The beds are rarely made. But there is a mahoosive mirror obviously!

barryfromclareisfit · 22/08/2019 21:19

I’m autistic, I believe everyone else is as straightforward as myself.

Except for ‘real tlme’ threads on Friday or Saturday nights. Which are usually fiction.

Crotchgoblins · 22/08/2019 21:25

I tend to take most people as honest unless it's obvious. I am too trusting!

I don't get why people lie/troll make up stuff though? How have they got the time and what are they getting out of it?!

timshelthechoice · 22/08/2019 21:25

Any weight or food thread on here is total bunkum, Cru.

Topsecretidentity · 22/08/2019 21:26

The salaries don't surprise me (maybe because I'm in the South East) but I'm always surprised by how often people say they clean their houses/ bathrooms and wash their sheets.

BitOftheSea · 22/08/2019 21:27

@NoTheresa there are no attractive men pretending to be women on MN. They’re sad women haters who get their kicks thinking they’re getting one over on women online. And they’re mostly obvious and aggressive.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/08/2019 21:27

Yes @NoTheresa! But i also think there are a lot of really ugly outfits on S&B posted too

littlepeas · 22/08/2019 21:28

I’ve got better at spotting bullshit threads but was really gullible for ages because I am absolutely truthful on here and assumed that most other posters were too!

I agree that the threads that involve the most mass bullshit are the height/weight ones. I also wonder whether the dangerous nutritional advice often given on here is from posters who genuinely think this is correct, or people having a laugh at someone else’s expense.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 22/08/2019 21:28

How can you tell someone’s house and income from meeting them face to face?
I’m plump unattractive buy all my clothes in charity shops and primark yet had nearly 500k in by bank account for a few years friends and most family were unaware of my bank account status. I consider myself v v ordinary. I do “lie” all the time on here just to prevent outing myself as I know lots of people in real life in here and would be terrified of being recognised
