To wonder if some posters realise some people lie on threads?

So when people say how much they earn, how much they spend on a holiday, how handsome their DH is, do you realise that some people will not be truthful?
I ask because I see comments all the time about how well-off most MN are. I have been to meet ups, and most MN are pretty ordinary women. Lovely, funny and kind, but not super wealthy with amazing homes and husbands, just ordinary. Of course there will be some women on MN who are very well-off but they are not the norm here.

jenny Yes of course you're right, not all of those are logged in. However the fact is the number of people that read the threads and could post are many many times higher than those that actually do post.

The weight and measurement ones are hilarious. Everyone is a size 8, 9 stone and at least 5ft 7. Don't see this in real life at all!

I can't claim to be 5'7" but can claim to be 5'6", sub size 8, under 9 stone in real life and have posted pics to prove it.

Slim people do exist, like it or lump it!

SolitudeAtAltitude · 24/08/2019 22:38

Sproink, what is your reasoning: your measurements are real, so everyone else's posted true measurements as well?

I do not dislike people for having that (or any) measurements, but neither do I believe that 90% of women are size 8 Grin because I have eyes!

LEELULUMPKIN · 24/08/2019 22:52

I know a bloke who lives for his daily Mumsnet fix. Yes Henry, I am talking about you! :)

Well said. The 'Popular Troll' is everywhere right now (there's a live one right now) they are incredibly similar, written in the same style and obvious but people fall over themselves to cheeerlead and comment. Bonkers.

Sproink · 25/08/2019 05:18

90% of women definitely aren't size 8, however, that doesn't mean that women that post their measurements on MN are necessarily lying about their size. It may be that slim women are just happier to divulge the info on a public forum.

Caucho · 25/08/2019 07:19

I accept that there will be a small sample who lie but it really is pointless to do on an anonymous forum. I personally believe is indicative of some kind of mental illness for those that do because well, like I said, what’s the point?

daisychain01 · 25/08/2019 08:22

What's the point?

Light entertainment.
Reaction
Attention-seeking
Fantasy

And it costs zero.

There are countless threads started by obvious trolls with an inflammatory opening post (eg AIBU to have just one little golly in my DCs window, it's only a tiny one but it has sentimental value... yeah right ....) which sets off a chain-reaction of responses, 10 pages of comments but no OP.

They just love throwing a hand grenade into the crowd and sitting back laughing at the mayhem. Zero cost other than 1 minute to set up a new thread. Or 10 seconds to type " I earn £60K + company car for a 30 hour week and I only have 3 GCSEs to my name ". Give me strength!

BalloonSlayer · 25/08/2019 08:57

I thought there were a lot of lies on the weight, height and measurements thread. Lots of people the exact same height, weight and measurements as me wearing two sizes smaller! What nonsense.

PegasusReturns · 25/08/2019 10:02

People who are 5'4 and a size 16 probably don't bother to post on the threads about size weight because they know that there is absolutely nothing exceptional about that height/wait profile and they're not seeking praise.

Those threads will be read by 1000's but it's natural will be posted on by those who fall outside of the norm.

CookPassBabtridge · 25/08/2019 11:14

Sproink I believe you, and I'm slim myself. But nearly everyone on those threads are tiny, it just doesn't compute.. Unless like you say, only the slim ones respond. Wherever I go in the UK, aside places like London/Brighton, are average 14-16.

Camomila · 25/08/2019 11:24

They do a mumsnet census every now and then don't they?

I think sometimes people expect mumsnet threads to be representative of the country, rather than representative of the mumsnet demographic (higher than ave qualifications, lots in the home counties etc.) which imo they usually are.

NoTheresa · 25/08/2019 12:12

weight

NoTheresa · 25/08/2019 12:14

So many people with PhDs in Mumsnet too! Just astonishing!!! 😉

NoTheresa · 25/08/2019 12:14

Actually, that's why I posted up my stats and added a picture. Lots of people more or less the exact height, weight and measurements as me but two sizes bigger!

EntirelyAnonymised · 25/08/2019 13:22

The weight thing can be for a number of reasons.

Body type; muscular, stocky types can be heavier on the scales but not necessarily look it, whereas ectomorph skinny types with not much muscle mass can be light on the scales but a bit flabby/skinny fat.

Clothes sizes vary massively from brand to brand/shop to shop. Also down to fit preference, some people may be wearing a size X but they might be vacuum packed into it, whereas their neighbour, also wearing the same size but weighing a stone+ less might prefer their clothes a bit more loose.

transformandriseup · 25/08/2019 13:29

I lie a hell of a lot less on Mumsnet then I do in real life!

Me too Grin
