You can get a cooked whole chicken like that from the store for like £5. Mash would be £1 to £1.50 and a large soft drink bottle probably another £1.

But that’s a ridiculous comparison.

Who’s expecting to pay this same for a restaurant meal as one you’d make at home?

You’re paying for someone to serve you, wash up, somewhere to sit and have a chat, the ambience of the place.

It should be judged against other mid level chains, pizza express, cafe rouge, that sort of thing.

I love Nando's it's usually my choice of birthday treat. I was also very very impressed at my most recent visit with my best friend who has a dairy and egg allergy and has to be very careful when eating out, their till was set up so that they could tick the things she was allergic too and then as she was ordering it would flag up if it contained any of the ingredients she couldn't have. So much easier than in other places we've been where she gets handed a book and we have to spend ages going through every different combination of things to see if she can have it safely. I'm not sure if this is standard in all Nando's but it made eating out for us that day a real pleasure.

Mummoomoocow · 22/08/2019 11:51

I’ve worked for nandos for years and there’s a large amount of incorrect information in this thread

Did you know food poisoning can take up to 10 days to present as d&v? The food giving you nearly immediate vomiting and no diarrhoea is more likely down to something else or intolerance to one/some ingredients 🤷‍♀️

FWIW we get some serious health and safety training and document all the cleaning and cooking procedures so do complain about your upset stomachs as the store will have evidence to support or disprove your meal was to blame

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/08/2019 11:51

If their chicken is really free-range/organic or whatever, I'd just like to point out that that kind of chicken in ASDA is £11. Not £5.

You can get a cooked whole chicken like that from the store for like £5. Mash would be £1 to £1.50 and a large soft drink bottle probably another £1. You're total cost to have the same ready made meal at home would be £7.50 and they want £20.95 for it. I don't see it as a good deal.

The point of eating out is because you don't want to cook yourself. Or an evening out. You can't buy all that and put it together outside the pub or cinema, can you, or even if you could, why would you want to Confused

CedarTreeLeaf · 22/08/2019 11:53

I only have Nandos as a takeaway, since I don't really like sticky tables so I'm comparing it to food that is already cooked that can be bought and taken back home. I could understand profit, but charging nearly 3x the cost of what you could get it for is a bit much. That's why I agree with other PPs that it's overpriced. I think there are other places that are far more reasonable with their pricing, and usually include a side.

ElizaDee · 22/08/2019 11:54

Plus a cooked chicken from the supermarket doesn't taste like nando's.

And my point, anyway, was that 25 quid for a meal out for 2 is cheap. Nothing to do with cost per meal or whatever.

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/08/2019 11:57

Personally I think the cooked supermarket chicken tastes much nicer...but then I am one of the many saying Nando's was dry and stringy (also remember hating their coleslaw too in agreement with pp).

Eh? We are talking about eating out Hmm

Next time o want a McDonald's I will just pop some chicken dippers and fries to go on then Confused

LaurieMarlow · 22/08/2019 11:59

Sure, but their proposition as a restaurant is different.

Nando’s is akin to something like Pizza Express or Giraffe. It isn’t expensive compared to them.

LaurieMarlow · 22/08/2019 12:00

Really not understanding the dry, string tasteless chicken comments. I’ve always found the chicken very tasty.

stucknoue · 22/08/2019 12:00

I don't get it either, I prefer kfc (actually I get my chicken fix from Morrison's rotisserie counter!)

CedarTreeLeaf · 22/08/2019 12:03

I'm not saying the pricing would or should be as low as Costco's food court but just for comparison you can get cottage pie for £2.75 and a butterfly burger without any sides is £9.75. If you want that with two regular sides it's £13.25 which is a meal for one person. You could buy a whole pizza from Costco's food court to feed the family for £7.95.

Like I said I don't expect many to meet Costco pricing, but £13.25 for a takeaway for one is too much. You could get Domino's for £20 and have multiple meals for a few people rather than have 2 meals for 1 evening from Nandos. I don't think their food quality is better than Domino's either.

I personally really dislike the restaurant experience of Pizza Express since they always seem over crowded with loud kids whenever I have visited. I haven't bothered to try Giraffe since I assume it will be similar.

reetgood · 22/08/2019 12:08

The dining experience of Costco and Dominos is a bit different to Nando’s. Even if you get takeaway, you are paying for additional premises, rates and staff at Nando’s.

Now in other catering 101, did you know you can make a cup of coffee at home for PENCE! PENCE I tell you!

HopefullyAnonymous · 22/08/2019 12:09

I get 25% discount in Nando’s. I like the food. The olives, pitta and red pepper dip, butterfly chicken...

It absolutely baffles me that anyone could say the portions are small though. Just shows how distorted our view is of what constitutes a meal.

CedarTreeLeaf · 22/08/2019 12:11

Some people like larger portions because they eat them the next day as leftovers so you're getting more meals for the price you have paid. It's not about eating it all at once, it's about saving money.

PumpkinP · 22/08/2019 12:11

I love it and don’t find it expensive. I went a few days ago and paid £40 for me and 4 kids how is that expensive?! Less than 10pp they also got unlimited frozen yogurt Confused I don’t agree that it is dry and bland either, my local one is always busy so it’s clearly popular

MitziK · 22/08/2019 12:18

Kids at school who are Portuguese say it's the nearest thing they can get in the UK to food from home. There are plenty of west African and Caribbean places around, but that isn't the same, according to them.

I've never been. But I'm not the target demographic - as one of them pointed out, I'm the demographic they have at home saying 'why are you paying so much for this stuff when I can make better at home?'.

ursuslemonade · 22/08/2019 12:20

We used to eat out in Nando's quite frequently before kids. I've stopped going for years as my young DC were anti-social.
Years have passed and it tastes different and not good value for money imo.
We've swapped to Pepe's piri piri. Granted it's not a restaurant per se, more like the usual fast food place but food tastes great and we're not after 'the restaurant experience' anymore.

MummytoCSJH · 22/08/2019 12:40

Pepe's is AMAZING ursus Grin

ursuslemonade · 22/08/2019 12:44

I bloody love it Mummyto 😀

CedarTreeLeaf · 22/08/2019 12:45

ursuslemonade

Completely agree and I relate (same reason we usually do takeaways). Nandos is better for a date night or something, but if you're just going for the food, there's better value elsewhere.

But again, costco is not a restaurant.

LaurieMarlow · 22/08/2019 13:01

If you’re comparing it to Costco/Dominos then you’re not understanding the point of it.

I wouldn’t get Nando’s for takeaway. I also wouldn’t do date night there. But it’s great for groups, casual lunches, before the cinema and going out with kids.

Portions are spot on, which is part of why I like it.
