Our Five Guys has a notice on the door about the fact peanuts are out in the restaurant so people are informed before they go in.

Quail15 · 22/08/2019 08:43

Ate there a few times in my early 20's usually as a pre cinema quick meal. It was always noisy and chaotic but we were always in a rush so it didn't really matter. I never thought it was a cheap option.

Moved out of town a few years ago so there isn't one nearby anymore. However I rarely eat chicken (any meat) out anymore unless the menu states where it comes from so I wouldn't choose to go back.

PurpleFlower1983 · 22/08/2019 08:43

The welfare standards bother me, same with KFC.

katewhinesalot · 22/08/2019 08:45

I'm quite partial to nandos and KFC Blush

You can keep your burger places.

formerbabe · 22/08/2019 08:45

I love Nandos...don't understand why so many people are slagging it off. It's a great place for a family meal.

tappitytaptap · 22/08/2019 08:47

I don't mind it but think its overpriced. There has been one at the end of my road for about 5 years and I've never been in it!

katewhinesalot · 22/08/2019 08:47

KFC in Berlin was not nice though.

Cantsleeppast3am · 22/08/2019 08:48

Nando's is not alcohol free, always have a glass of wine there.

gamerwidow · 22/08/2019 08:49

lonelytiredlow I was responding to your post taken out of context lower down the thread and hadn’t realised we’d moved onto talking about five guys not Nando’s.
Big book of allergens is in Nando’s not Five Guys for clarity.
Never been to Five Guys but if your telling me that’s what they say on the sign then that’s good enough for me.

jarhead123 · 22/08/2019 08:51

I like it but its extortionate for what it is!

LonelyTiredandLow · 22/08/2019 08:53

Yes, I realised there was a crossed wire somewhere! Only been to Nando's twice and years ago so only know my chicken was dry.
Re: Five Guys; The peanut display was a bit Shock to me considering recent deaths from chain food outlets but if refined peanut oil is safe for most then I suppose it makes sense to make customers aware. I do think signs on the doors would put my mind at rest though.

PettyContractor · 22/08/2019 08:53

I love Nandos. I don't know what people who are eating dry bland chicken are ordering, mine is always very spicy marinaded chicken that is moist and flavoured all the way through, but with less fat than KFC.

For the haters: name a chain restaurant that is better? I'd accept the poshest pizza chain as being comparable. Cafe Rouge I've only eaten in three times, was decent one out of three times. I've only ever been disappointed in Nando's once, one particular branch I will never go back to, as I know what I got isn't how it's supposed to be.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 22/08/2019 08:55

Agree, over priced, poor food, poor welfare standards.

isthismylifenow · 22/08/2019 08:57
recrudescence · 22/08/2019 08:58

Nice enough but not deserving of its cult status.

RingtheBells · 22/08/2019 09:02

DS raves about it, I had never been and they opened one near work which I went to one lunchtime with workmates, it seemed very expensive and not that good but service was quick which is what you need when on a work lunch break. I wouldn’t go there with DH though

WhatNoNotYouAgain · 22/08/2019 09:04

I am honestly perplexed by people saying it's expensive. It costs about £35 for DH, DS and I, maybe slightly less. Is that considered pricy?! Genuine question.

Appleby39 · 22/08/2019 09:05

A Nandos opened near to us a few short years ago and for the opening were giving away free chicken. They were I assume heating it up on what looked like a small BBQ. Anyway, we picked up a few boxes as there were four of us and we were out and about shopping so headed back to the car to eat them. They seemed really nice to start with, until I saw my husband chomp down on a piece leaving a gaping gap of raw redness which was cold and obviously un-cooked. After us all gagging after seeing that, we threw the rest away. We did tell them about it but they didn't seem interested. Needless to say after that we haven't ever dined in there.

gamerwidow · 22/08/2019 09:05

Yes it’s an unusual decision given the risk of cross contamination. My niece has a severe allergy to peanuts and tree nuts and I wouldn’t even risk her sitting in there.

RingtheBells · 22/08/2019 09:06

It was expensive for what it was, I have had better in normal pubs for much less money

SinkGirl · 22/08/2019 09:06

Yes the big boxes seemed unnecessary to me too but as pp said perhaps it is to make people with allergies aware?

I’m not sure everyone would make the connection though. And given that the actual peanuts are an allergen and the oil generally isn’t, I think it’s madness.

They do have really nice hot dogs though 🤷‍♀️

If I’m in one of those places with a load of chains, Five Guys is the one i would go to. Was forced into a Frankie & Bennys recently and it was absolutely awful. When I was in sixth form my friends and I used to go to one and I really don’t remember it being that bad.

I do agree as I said above that chains are good if you’re with kids, mainly because there are always other kids there so you don’t feel like you’re spoiling everyone’s meal if they make a sound. I remember my sister taking us and our twin toddlers into a hipstery bar restaurant in London and I really didn’t want to go in. The boys were so well behaved and I relaxed, and just as we were packing up, one of the boys made the loudest most ear piercing 10 second screech you’ve ever heard. Im amazed all the glasses didn’t shatter. I moved so fast to get them out of there, I basically left burn marks in the floor. Most of their sweet potato fries were on the floor too. I left a massive tip and have avoided anywhere grown up ever since!

Tchalla · 22/08/2019 09:08

I'm from South Africa where Nandos is originally from and I love it. I go there when I'm feeling a little homesick as the decor is exactly the same and they play African music especially South African house and bands I love.

That being said prefer SA branches to UK ones because of differences in taste and price point. For our family of five i have never spent more than R200 (~£10-£15) whereas here maybe £50-70 for everyone.

But I love it. My sister lives in Belgium and we make a Nandos date every once in a while and she flies over since they don't have one there.

Azeema · 22/08/2019 09:09

I went one time because famous ‘cheeky nandos’ saying Here. To experience British culture. Food was not eatable. Maybe it was better years and years ago?

Ginnymweasley · 22/08/2019 09:09

It's no more expensive than most chain restaurants. The main meals are about 9 quid for chicken and 2 sides. Drinks are normal prices but with unlimited refills. How cheap are you all getting your food in other restaurants? Like many things in life people have different tastes.

chatwoo · 22/08/2019 09:33

Tell me about it OP! I live opposite a small Nandos, and I really don't get the fuss. That being said, I do have the tenderloins with sweet potato chips, every couple of months. Tasty and relatively low-cal for a takeaway. I give the burgers a swerve though, not a fan. (Dlsclaimer: I'm not in the UK.)

So for me, it's purely because they are across the road and offer takeaway that won't kill me (unlike my favourite pizza which probably will, eventually). Definitely wouldn't go to one that was out of my way in any shape of form.
