To ask how much you pay in rent each month?

Just out of simple curiosity really, and to see how our rent compares with other parts of the country.

I’ll go first. We pay £700 a month for a privately rented three bedroom flat in East Anglia. That’s actually relatively cheap for a three bed (most go for around £800/£900 here) but that’s probably because the third bedroom is tiny.

Another worry with this for me will be all the Londoners forking our 1.5 k a month , the government won’t pay this for you wen you retire and can’t afford the rent so what ya gonna do then ??

There could be three problems with the idea of pensioners in private-rented accommodation.

Housing benefit, or whatever (probably less generous) means-tested benefit replaces it, will only provide them with very basic accommodation.

Even then this will represent a huge increase in the state's housing-costs bill. As "generation rent" hits retirement a demographic who previously would have been owner occupiers will need to have their rent paid from the public purse. This could have a huge impact on welfare and state-pension spending elsewhere.

And, without substantial reform of the sector, elderly people could find themselves on short-term tenancies having to up sticks and move every year on a couple of months notice at the landlord's whim. It's bad enough when you're 25, but what about when you're 80 or 90.

Agreed that it will cost the state a fortune. Having so many private sector tenants already does anyway due to Hb top ups even for those of working age but yes it gets more expensive as people get older and can't work at all

It is easier to get social housing once you're over 55 though, so hopefully some people will do that.

But having the majority of tenants in the private sector as opposed to the public sector was never going to be a good long term economic move.

€1800 per month for a period (Rococo, built 1774) 5 bed, 3 bathroom house between Brussels and Leuven. We were paying €2600 for a more modern one, but I love this house as it makes sense to me.
