To ask how much you pay in rent each month?

Just out of simple curiosity really, and to see how our rent compares with other parts of the country.

I’ll go first. We pay £700 a month for a privately rented three bedroom flat in East Anglia. That’s actually relatively cheap for a three bed (most go for around £800/£900 here) but that’s probably because the third bedroom is tiny.

£650 for a 2 bedroom flat in Cardiff.

lonelyheartsclubband · 11/08/2019 11:49

£805 for a small 2 bed flat in Southend, Essex.

TheInebriati · 11/08/2019 11:58

Just under £360 for a new build 2 bed house with a garden; but its on a very rough estate where most of you wouldn't want to live.

TinyMarie · 11/08/2019 11:59

£820 for a good sized two bed flat in North Hertfordshire.

ElizaDee · 11/08/2019 12:00

The last time I rented I paid £1250 for a 3 bed house with front and back garden, 5mins from a train station. Zone 4. This was 10yrs ago.

More recently, my sister was paying around £1150 I think for a 2 bed flat 10-15mins from the main shopping centre and train station. The 2nd bedroom couldn't even be called a room in my opinion though. Zone 4.

ElizaDee · 11/08/2019 12:00

3 bed houses are about 2k in that area now I think.

Heymummee · 11/08/2019 12:02

£1000 a month for a new build townhouse in Cheshire. More than I want to spend, but nice area and lovely house.

darkriver19886 · 11/08/2019 12:05

£305 HA
However, rent for private landlord is £450.
I am very fortunate.

DwightYouIgnorantSlut · 11/08/2019 12:13

£1100 for a 3 bed, 2 bath detached about 20 minutes drive from Cambridge.

henpartystress · 11/08/2019 12:19

£1200 for a 2 bed 2 bathroom flat in a nice area in Bristol. We love it. If the guy was selling we'd buy it for sure

mybabyisteething · 11/08/2019 12:20

£520 for a three bed end terrace. We live in Suffolk.

But it's quite big. Bedrooms are 11ft x 9ft, 12ft x 9ft and 7ftx9ft.

Fuma · 11/08/2019 12:25

£380 for a three bed from the council. Private rents here for the same start at £850. I am very lucky and believe most fervently that everyone should be able to access social housing. Getting this house quite literally changed our lives.

Charley34 · 11/08/2019 12:30

£795 , 2 bed gf large flat large garden private tennant Southend essex

Badabingbadabum · 11/08/2019 12:32

£785 for a three bed semi in a nice family suburb of Birmingham. Since we moved her about three years ago the area has increased in popularity so this would probably be let for more than £800 now.

elQuintoConyo · 11/08/2019 12:41

£600 for a 1,000ft2 four-bed, one-bath flat, incredible seaviews, centre of town. Just south of Barcelona.
When we left Barcelona 15 years ago, our rent was £700 for a 37m2 studio in Gracia! That city is nuts! Off I go to check rents in that area now....

MT2017 · 11/08/2019 13:56

JFC I can't believe how much rent is in SE/London. No wonder lower paid workers (but not entitled to benefits or cheaper rent / HA) are leaving Hmm

And what happens when your rent goes up but your salary doesn't? Or when you retire?

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 11/08/2019 14:09

Or when you retire?

This seems to be huge ticking time bomb. In about 30 years there will be a huge cohort of people reaching an age when they can't work any more who will have no means of accommodating themselves on the small retirement incomes they will have.

ParrotsForLife · 11/08/2019 14:11

£600 for a three bed in Leeds/Bradford border. Two double, one single, garden and garage. Close to work. Excellent motorway links.

lanbro · 11/08/2019 14:12

600 for a 3 bed semi in north east, shortly moving to a 2 bed for slightly less but releasing £2400 in upfront rent that I don't have to pay in new place

Helpfindme · 11/08/2019 14:13

£600 4 bed (all very good sized rooms) 1 bath, 2 ensuite, house. No dining room, small yard. Location not great, but area isn't rough. Worcestershire.

Omega369 · 11/08/2019 14:14

I think a better question would be what percentage of your income do you spend on rent? £2k a month seems a lot but if your household after-tax income is £10k a month (not uncommon for DINKs in London) then it's not so bad

Armbow45 · 11/08/2019 14:18

£750 for a 2 bed new build semi-detached in a small rural village in Norfolk.

We sold it earlier this year to an investor and have been renting it until we relocate to Scotland next week.

We’ve just bought a 2 bed new build apartment in Edinburgh, with identical apartments currently being rented for £1,300 per month.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 11/08/2019 14:20

I'm still baffled by what earthly use the thread is! Rents range from very low to very high according to where you live and how big the place is. Isn't that all that will be established? Some people will express shock at Londoners paying thousands for something that would cost tuppence ha'penny in Dingleberry-on-the-Minge. It's all so predictable!

Fuma · 11/08/2019 14:59

Re retirement, people's rents will (mostly) be paid for by housing benefit. And all of their pension, if they have one. Which is why many private sector tenants don't - why would they, when it would take a substantial pot to cover the amount they'd get for housing benefit+ state pension before they were even marginally better off. Also ofc there's limited scope for pension saving activity when you're paying private rent prices.
