AIBU?

Biggest Shithole in the UK

Am retiring soon so want to relocate away from the rat race but everywhere I consider away from the Home Counties seems to be regarded as a dump. Money goes further away from the SE, I thought about Norfolk which is within reasonable distance of civilisation but my friends think that it is backwards/racist. Is it true that Lincs/Cambs/Norfolk is best avoided. AIBU to move?

There's a fab place called goadyfuckertown- you'd fit in well there I think.

Don't agree with the avoid Lincolnshire comment, Lincoln is a lovely city.

I think most people in London and certain parts of the surrounding counties actually have no idea about the rest of the country and when they venture “into England” they are genuinely shocked.

Norwich is lovely

Not worth moving OP.

Nowhere outside of the home counties has electricity, and they still try to cure illnesses with leeches out in the sticks too. Not to mention you can't buy avocados anywhere outside of central London.

OP, whoever is regarding anywhere away from SE to be a dump, is clearly a massive hypocrite! Most of the country consider SE to be a dump!
Go and stay for weekends in various places you’d consider living and get to know the areas you enjoy most.

Have you considered Blackpool?

I liked Norwich but it's not accessible to the SE by road...
That's probably the main reason that it's so nice...

Personally, when I retire, I'm putting as much distance between me and 'civilisation' as I sensibly can...

How utterly ridiculous to think that! Lincs is excellent value for money, as is Norfolk. I've never looked at Cambs.

Mid-Wales is also very good value, I've seen some cracking properties there, with land.😍

Well I don't think Norfolk and Lincs want you with that attitude. We certainly don't in Cambs,

What do you want from your new home area?

I grew up in the home counties, now live in Wales, my old homesteads have changed so much so quickly compared to Wales I would never want to go back.

Me too. I sit there on Rightmove, salivating gently.

DS2 lives in Norfolk. It's beautiful, DH wants to move there but I don't because I'm happy where we are and it's just too far away from our extended family and DS1.

Lincolnshire is gorgeous too, as is Rutland but you don't get as much for your money there.

Nowt wrong with Narfolke boi! Narwich is a fine city hinit it?

Some nice bits of other Narfolke like North Norfolk:)

Suffolke isnt that bad either try Long Melford thats nice! or Bury St Edmunds. Ipswich aint too bright.

Forget Cambridge you need stoopid money to linve there now and its too crowded.

Co Durham and Northumberland are beautiful. We have literally the Country, Coast, and urban town and city's here, all with main train links and motorways. All bordering other wonderful places such as North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Scotland.

Whitby is just stunning. I would love to retire here.

True story : everyone I ever met said the welsh are tricky fuckers and it pisses down non stop...no work....depressing to be in the towns and generally not somewhere to ever consider living ...only leaving! . Apologies to the welsh! I was from the south coast ‘ Bournemouth and Brighton ....centre of the universe of course ;) .....we wanted to move away for years due to congestion etc....stayed for several months in Somerset but as pricey as south so looked a lot further and couldn’t find anything we liked. So we went to visit a friend in north wales and stayed for a few weeks. Well. What an eye opener. My stupid preconceived ideas were utter shit. We bought a house there and then. Everyone’s so friendly - it’s hard to garden without spending half the day chatting! our ite us out. Strangers chat MUCH more than down south. Road rage is much lower ‘ A&E times lower, doctors appointments quicker...everything’s better and best of all ITS NOT AS WET AS WE THOUGHT ;) we have a bigger house and a huge chunk of money in the bank we never expected to have because it’s half the price up here ! Why the hell did we not consider moving before. Crazy. Seriously anyone down south - come to wales. It is lovely - it’s cheap and there are some amazing places to visit.

Yeah! Blackpool is full of friendly people. Why would you do that to them? We can't be ruining it with the smugs of the Home Counties...

You cannot really get to Norfolk in a car. The roads are single track and sometimes the farmer forgets to open the gate.

Cornwall’s your best bet.
