Biggest Shithole in the UK

Am retiring soon so want to relocate away from the rat race but everywhere I consider away from the Home Counties seems to be regarded as a dump. Money goes further away from the SE, I thought about Norfolk which is within reasonable distance of civilisation but my friends think that it is backwards/racist. Is it true that Lincs/Cambs/Norfolk is best avoided. AIBU to move?

Lincoln itself is lovely. I’m not from the UK and I’ve met so many lovely, warm, welcoming people here.

How can your friends label a whole county as backwards/racist? On what evidence are they basing this observation?

I'm in North Lincolnshire and I love it when people slag off Scunthorpe. Keeps the twats out. We have amazing sports facilities, stunning and huge green park areas, fab community spirit, lovely people who say good morning on the street, every kind of restaurant you could wish for, no traffic jams... I could go on.

I'm from Cambridge, wouldn't live there again, I don't think. I hate great Yarmouth and Lowestoft with a passion, I've lived in both places and can say I don't plan to step foot in either place ever again. If you want to see backwards, you'll find it there! Lincolnshire have the worst drivers in the country (don't try to argue with me about that 😂)

It's not racist in my opinion, there just aren't many people in Norfolk who aren't white. That's a fact. We have more and more differing cultures in Norwich though and it is a very vibrant city.

Lincoln is similar but less going on. Cambs is lovely but pricey, closer to London though

I live in a Yorkshire dales village just outside of Ilkley, I've lived in lots of places including the South East and this place is amazing! Stunning countryside, good schools, 30 mins on a train to Leeds.

What's your budget and requirements OP ? There is a hell of a lot of the UK outside the home counties and most of it is lovely

I’d decide what you want before you decide on an area. Do you want to live by the sea or in the country? Is having a city nearby important? Do you want shops and restaurants within walking distance? Are you looking to join community groups?

Luton is the biggest dump I've ever been to in Britain. Rubbish all over the streets, run down houses, I couldn't wait to get out.

If you like the home counties I suggest staying there as other parts of the UK are very definitely not like, er, Surrey. Thankfully.

Interesting to read all your views. Can’t really afford Cambridge itself, it is just as expensive as where I am currently so there would be no benefit to moving. We be visiting Norwich next week!

Traffic around Lincoln can be bad, but the city itself is very nice. Apparently it's the 5th happiest place to live in the UK!

Lincoln is a bit up itself. I live half way between Scunthorpe and Lincoln and I always choose Scunny to do my shopping, cinema visits etc.

With that attitude I'd stay where you are, as the rest of the U.K. is such a shithole, please don't inflict yourself on innocent friendly non racist people, just stick with the dickheads you know.
