Am retiring soon so want to relocate away from the rat race but everywhere I consider away from the Home Counties seems to be regarded as a dump. Money goes further away from the SE, I thought about Norfolk which is within reasonable distance of civilisation but my friends think that it is backwards/racist. Is it true that Lincs/Cambs/Norfolk is best avoided. AIBU to move?

I don't much like the sound of your friends. Wherever you go, be sure to leave them behind.

flirtygirl · 10/08/2019 21:08

Lots of pp on this thread are showing a lack of comprehension. The Op clearly says considered a dump and that her friends have said these things and is asking for opinions.

If her friends are not white then they may have the right opinion of those places.
Lincoln, Norfolk and Cambridge are very mono culture out of the main cities. This is not considered a good thing or place to live for many different reasons.

But the four pages shows so many lacking comprehension and jumping down the ops throat.

The only thing I do agree is op get the title changed, that is rude and if you want well thought out answers and not just those frothing at the mouth, then you need to ask your question in a different way.

TroysMammy · 10/08/2019 21:09

Swansea is civilised. We've even got a train that goes straight to London.

MaybeitsMaybelline · 10/08/2019 21:10

I say stay in the Home Counties. The rest of the UKs amazing spots doesn’t want or need you.

thenightsky · 10/08/2019 21:10

@LadyCarolinePooterVonThigh Aye... get Queenway on all green like my and DS did this morning on the way to parkrun, and yer laughing.

NeverSurrender · 10/08/2019 21:10

@darkcloudsandsunnyskies Grin 😂

South Lincolnshire is a fab place to live, friendly people , lots of work, doctors and schools aren’t oversubscribed, direct trains to London, well situated for driving around he rest of the uk, no hills hillstarts
I do agree with the bad driving though!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/08/2019 21:11

Have a look at Holkham beach when you're in Norfolk OP it's beautiful!

isseywithcats · 10/08/2019 21:12

please dont move to the Yorkshire Dales its so dire here that im sure you would hate the miles of stunning scenery, the seaside towns that are still lovely to visit, all the heritage in the area and the fantastic towns like York and Harrogate

Jsmith99 · 10/08/2019 21:12

@Ellisandra

Lucky you!

Do you have any other helpful suggestions for our delightful OP? I wondered about Luton or Crawley, but thought they might be a bit too close to home...

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 10/08/2019 21:12

Glossing over your friends imagined dragons presumably invented to convince themselves what they paid for their house is reasonable what do you want from retirement? Are you social and easily able to make friends? Do you have specific hobbies?

Moving somewhere you know basically nothing about is quite a bold move. If you haven’t thought about what YOU are going to do to get on there and have the life you want you’ll have a crap time regardless of how leafy it is.

ohrosy · 10/08/2019 21:12

the language of OP [could we have a cringe emojo?] hardly sounds classy!

TheFairyCaravan · 10/08/2019 21:13

If you get to Norwich before the 18th have a go on the Helter Skelter in the cathedral OP.

WitchesGlove · 10/08/2019 21:16

I disagree about the Home Counties.

Essex is lovely, very friendly people.

Kent is grim though (some of it)

Also avoid places like Slough

Stay put - absolute shit holes, all of them and their cousins.

Retiring to a place where you have not paid any council tax, but expect the council tax payers of that place to pay for your adult social care when you can no longer wipe your own arse is fairly shitty to be honest.

LadyCarolinePooterVonThigh · 10/08/2019 21:17

night a good result!

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 10/08/2019 21:18

Stay put. We have enough older people of our own without importing moaners from richer counties

PooWillyBumBum · 10/08/2019 21:18

When I read the title the first places I thought of were in the Home Counties as I live down here and have my whole life. Can’t wait until I can move elsewhere. You have a very small world.

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 10/08/2019 21:19

Or try Spain. I am told it is full of types like you

BiologyIsReal · 10/08/2019 21:19

Perhaps get out more OP and seek opinions that are not solely from stuck up metropolitan liberal elites who think everyone outside London and its environs has grass growing out their ears and spend their time have neo-Nazi get togethers.

stargirl1701 · 10/08/2019 21:20

Morning side in Edinburgh.

You can get the train to London very easily.

tomatoesandstew · 10/08/2019 21:22

I think if you are used to a bustling multi cultural place then you may find the depths of norfolk/ lincs/ cambridge a bit undiverse and with a lot of people that were very pro brexit and have very strong views on immigration. However probably not too different from what you find in a lot of the villages in the home counties but maybe the people are a bit more well off.
I think you need to be clear what you want - do you want socially conservative or liberal areas, how diverse? There are some lovely vibrant small towns scattered around and big international cities. If you ask someone from London/ HCounties they almost invariable tell you that nothing good happens outside it.

StoneofDestiny · 10/08/2019 21:22

How can somebody have reached retirement age without having travelled beyond the HomeCounties 🤔😱

Franklyyes · 10/08/2019 21:25

Don’t come to the West Country - jolly awful place to live 🙄

Notaboxer · 10/08/2019 21:26

I live in what many people would consider a shit hole. A former mining village in County Durham.

I’m an hour away from beautiful Northumberland, just over an hour away from the Lake District. 4 mins in car from the beach. Amazing countryside within 20 mins whichever way I travel and great links to lots of places via the A19&A1 and Durham Train Station.

And where I live the most expensive house is under 250k for a 6 bed detached with land.

There’s arseholes everywhere op- visit some places and one will grab you I’m sure
