Is not getting far more media coverage?

Myotherprofile exactly.

It doesn’t take a huge leap to see how the gutter press operates. Seeking out some random volunteer in Malaysia, someone looking for a moment in the spotlight, who’ll tell them how challenging the jungle terrain is, and how their boots were damaged after wrestling through undergrowth for days. After all, they aren’t lying are they? But the gutter press turn that into ‘impossible that she walked there.’

Likewise I can imagine the worst of the press approaching the grandfather, sympathising with him, he says something like, I can’t imagine her wandering off like that and the gutter press turn it into ‘relatives don’t believe the reported events.’

No one should underestimate the lengths the worst of the press will go to.

QueenofmyPrinces · 17/08/2019 11:17

I guess there will be people who believe the story the police are giving, and those who won’t.

We are all individual people with the freedom and ability to make up our own minds about how much we believe the version of events that we are being given in the Press.

Re the bare feet. I can’t imagine myself walking over rough terrain barefoot, hard enough in shoes. I’ve had a little experience of rainforest and it’s not like European deciduous forest with a deep leaf litter. There are large tree roots and vines all over the floor, not to mention thorns and stinging pants, plus biting insects.
If she did venture into the forest I feel he would have sat down after a very short time.
The searchers had a recording of a message from her mother broadcast into the search area.
This is a matter public interest and provided aspersions are not directed towards the family I do not feel online discussion is harmful to them. Headlines in the tabloid press, however, is a different matter altogether

The soles of the feet would have been examined closely so surely if there was any evidence that she hadn’t walked to that location, foul play would not have been ruled out

Bluntness100 · 17/08/2019 12:17

Exactly.

Nice censorship there 👍🏻

ThighThighOfthigh · 18/08/2019 15:50

Her parents faces are utterly utterly anguished.

jennymanara · 18/08/2019 15:53

Why someone sitting on the internet thinks they have the skills and knowledge to question a post mortem finding that that the 3 countries involved and family have accepted, always amazes me.

Antonin · 18/08/2019 18:12

Some pp have qualifications and life experience that leads us to question official findings and not to accept everything at face value.
And does everyone accept every decision made by, say, their health professional when they feel it is incorrect?

You may be right, but most of the posts appear to be random speculation with no knowledge of starvation, ulcers, the effects of malaria medication, etc... so they just come across as odd conspiracy theories.

Even if you could believe that Malaysia would attempt to cover this up for tourism reasons, there were British and Irish detectives involved. Nóra's parents will have had a lot more information than we have been privy too and seem, although heartbroken, to not be massively disputing any point. There are unanswered questions, like how she hid out for so long, but even during the search, their chief of police was quoted talking about how they'd be warned that she would probably be hiding behind something and not come towards strangers.

RivkaMumsnet · 18/08/2019 21:13

Hi there,

Just another reminder that we will delete posts which include speculation - as we really don't feel that's appropriate.

We've deleted a few more posts, but may have to delete the whole thread if this becomes unsustainable.

Thanks.

Toooldnowx · 18/08/2019 21:19

Because it's a foreign country, especially predominantly non-white, the working assumption for some is that they are inept and corrupt, and that they are covering up because they need the British tourists to keep coming over.

Dungeondragon15 · 18/08/2019 21:52

hmm. I don't think my comment was any more "speculative" than the great majority of other comments. If you need to censor perhaps it would be best to delete the whole thread rather than randomly picking out one or two comments.

ThighThighOfthigh · 18/08/2019 23:08

What is so wrong with speculating? As long as it's not unkind. I have no speculation btw.

HennyPennyHorror · 18/08/2019 23:35

Thigh it's distasteful. Gossiping about a child's death. Speculation is in fact..gossip.

manicmij · 18/08/2019 23:36

Loads of coverrage. On tv, radio and in newspapers. Now her death and the postmortem being given coverage

HennyPennyHorror · 19/08/2019 00:15

Man this thread title was written when Nora was still missing and there wasn't actually THAT much coverage. It's moved on since then if you read it.

ThighThighOfthigh · 19/08/2019 00:48

Henny then the whole thread is distasteful.

x2boys · 19/08/2019 08:58

Would you be happy if people were speculating about" your"child s death Thigh? I have read some awful.comments on line ( not just on here) I think people forget this is a real family grieving .

ThighThighOfthigh · 19/08/2019 09:08

Of course not x2 but isn't the whole thread some form of speculation? I think it's been (early on) "poor Nora, where is she?" Which isn't nasty.

ThighThighOfthigh · 19/08/2019 09:10

Personally, now that Nora's has been located, i think it's time for this thread to go.
