Fat shamed at airport

Myself and my husband recently travelled back home from our all inclusive chill out holiday. The nature of the hotel was adults only, generally adult couples or mother daughter groups however there was two younger 20 girls who were at our hotel and also on our flights.

Myself and my husband have a bit of a tradition of having an Indian takeaway the night we return from holiday. It started on our honeymoon and we have carried it on ever since. In the queue for check in my dh reminded me of our tradition and asked me what I was having... As a joke I repeated the part from Gavin and Stacey and quoted smithys whole order.

Anyway hours later we are waiting for our baggage at the other end and these girls are directly in front of me. One girl turns to the other girl and said 'OMG did you hear thay girl in the check in queue' 'which one?' 'You know that annoying, fat one, with the massive double chin, you know she was at our hotel, you should have heard her saying what she was ordering from the Indian, greedy bitch'

At this point I was standing inches away from her, I didn't say anything but it has really hurt me.

For context, I've put on some weight recently (personal stress and comfort eating) and I'm a large 16. Already lacking in confidence about my figure and cringing at photos of me all week. I feel like this has really put a downer on an amazing holiday and tainted my memories. I really wish I had said something at the time but I was just so embarrassed.

@Wildorchidz

I agree with this. What they said was mean spirited and unkind but some of the replies here are vile.

So what?! Wink I personally couldn't give a shit about being 'vile' about these horrible little skanks.

These are grown women making nasty offensive remarks and taking the piss out of the OP.

Of course they were out of order. Don’t worry, I’m sure if they keep slating people like this then someone will give them a taste of their own medicine.

SgtFredColon · 06/08/2019 23:00

bluegirlgreen are you eyeing up my bhunas?

OP that’s horrible. Hope you are feeling better Flowers

pourmeanotherglass · 06/08/2019 23:01

Hi OP, I'm also a size 16 Gavin and Stacey fan. Don't let the skinny bitches grind you down xxx

bluegirlgreen · 06/08/2019 23:01

@bluegirlgreen
I personally couldn't give a shit about being 'vile' about these horrible little shanks

That’s your prerogative. It’s just not the way I would think.

LuckyLou7 · 06/08/2019 23:10

I’d have leant forward and said to her friend: Me. She’s talking about me. You know, you were behind us in the queue over there, surely you saw me, you can’t miss me really

I'd have done THIS. She'd have been mortified and would probably be more careful in future about discussing the appearance of a woman she doesn't know.

HeresMe · 06/08/2019 23:11

The women were horrible at the airport, should not have said anything. And were completely wrong.

But you also need to understand that most people won't recognise the reference Smithy's order as gavin and Stacey was reativily successful but going by ratings it really wasn't seen by most people in this country.

ElizaPancakes · 06/08/2019 23:14

Flowers for you OP. Horrible and I totally understand why this would make you feel your holiday and been ruined.

It’ll pass though I promise.

darkcloudsandsunnyskies · 06/08/2019 23:15

For other people to hurt you you give them that permission.

Permission denied.

Branster · 06/08/2019 23:18

Mislu they are not worth your time, seriously, try and forget them. They were being mean and I bet you they comment, judge and gossip about every single woman they come across behind their backs (including about each other).
You were so lucky to spend a wonderful holiday with your DH who clearly cares about you a lot, not many women have that. Enjoy the memories of the actual holiday and forget about these girls, they are clearly very shallow and awfully rude.
I love Gavin & Stacey - we always squeeze in a little quote here and there and, very rarely, some people have no idea what’s it all about, very strange.
Out of curiosity, what did you have in the end?
Sending you a nice hug OP
I would also like to point out that the majority of 20 year olds are NOT assholes.

TheStuffedPenguin · 06/08/2019 23:22

At a size 16 you are hardly massive !

I see much bigger than a size 16 every down in town and many of them are young lasses with kiddies .

TimeForNewStart · 06/08/2019 23:25

But presumably she didn’t know the OP was behind her?

Seems odd she was talking about it hours later.

pallisers · 06/08/2019 23:25

Here you go @Misslu - this will cheer you up.

I'd like to think that they had no idea you could hear them. Although I'd also like to think no child of mine would say something so mean about another person out loud in public where anyone could hear them. But in fairness only one of them said something horrible. Maybe the other girl is on skinnyyounggirlsnet saying "omg went on holiday with best friend from school and she has turned into such a judgemental bitch - I was embarrassed to be with her"

CensorshipHereIsAJoke · 06/08/2019 23:25

Ignore them op. I hope it didn't out you off your Indian and you ordered everything you wanted. I'm a proper pig if we have Indian, I have to get all this:

Poppadoms
Mango, mint & lime dips
Onion bhajees
Prawn puree
Lamb Madras
Pilau rice
AND a naan bread

🐖

I don't eat it all in one go I do give it a good go though 🙈

TanMateix · 06/08/2019 23:26

I think what is upsetting here is that you lost the opportunity to set the things straight.

Some people are just nasty but to be honest, whoever who thinks is fun bitching about other people’s appearance has a bigger problem than being a size 16. That level of nastiness and superficiality makes for a very sad existence.

Happymum12345 · 06/08/2019 23:29

How hurtful. Try to put it behind you & remember your holiday-it’s sounds wonderful!

TanMateix · 06/08/2019 23:31

I do think it is also wonderful that you have kept this little tradition for so long and can still joke about it, so do not let this put you down or tarnish your little tradition. 🙂

Sunflower20 · 06/08/2019 23:35

They are simply horrible people, don't let it get to you OP. Try and see it as motivation to get to your ideal weight.

thenightsky · 06/08/2019 23:38

OP, you have exactly the tradition as me and DH! A curry takeaway on the first night home from holidays Grin

We've now also rather got into the habit of having one on our last night before the holiday too.

Any excuse for curry, but not a 'futile' korma.

Lockheart · 06/08/2019 23:41

They were horrible and YANBU to be upset.

Lots of posters on this thread are also horrible, and I can't believe the misogynistic name calling. "Skanks" "tarts" - have a word with yourselves FFS. That's just as unacceptable as what they did.

escapade1234 · 06/08/2019 23:41

Why do you think they thought you were annoying? Did you have some interaction with them on the holiday?

Densol999 · 06/08/2019 23:43

They were talking amongst themselves
The OP overheard a private conversation
Yes its hurtful but dont all pretend all you mumsnet pearl clutchers dont form opinions of your own about people

escapade1234 · 06/08/2019 23:44

Dreadful language being used on this thread. Who uses the terms “tart” and “skank”? More likely a very immature mean-spirited young woman who needs to grow up. Let’s hope she becomes a nicer person, shall we? Instead of wishing obesity and wrinkles on her!

toffeeapple123 · 06/08/2019 23:48

They forget they will get older, have children, change body shape, get cellulite, probably some stretch marks, definitely lines and wrinkles.

This.
