To think no couple goes to bed at the same time?

Watching a programme tonight with DH and saw another example of a couple lying in bed at night having a conversation after clearly retiring at the same time. Mentioned to DH that we never ever go to bed at the same time (I'm an early to bed early to rise person and he's the opposite). DH said that no couple does - it's just a plot device to facilitate dialogue. I think I agree and couples who go to bed at same time don't exist. Anyone out there (past honeymoon stage) who does?

Together 11 years and we go at the same time 99% of the time. Occasionally I will stay up a little later to watch something.

We go to bed at the same time. I love it. We chat, or do a crossword, or read, or have sex, or whatever.

It’s my favourite part of the day.

If one of us is away for work and staying in a hotel, we tend to still head to go to bed at the same time (time zone allowing) and Skype.

We’ve been together for 20 years.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/08/2019 23:38

Not if I can help it.

I need to wind down and relax before going to sleep and he's just fucking irritating Grin

Generally he goes to bed first and I go later when he's asleep and get peace perfect peace.

I generally only sleep for about 5 hours and if i'm not wound down in my own way, it takes hours to get to sleep and means I only get 2-3 hours which obviously is not enough.

My Dh always stayed up late after me, I was totally fine with it, I'd read a book and doze off and I thought he was downstairs watching a sitcom or the likes. Turns out he was browsing all sorts of porn and couldn't wait til I said I was tired to pack me off upstairs.
Funny enough years later it turned out my Bf's dh was doing exactly the same thing.

Both marriages in the shitter.

Ime it's a bad sign if a man wants to spend every night alone for hours after his SO's asleep.

joystir59 · 04/08/2019 23:39

Unless one of us is away/working a night, we always do.

MrsRhubarb · 04/08/2019 23:40

We used to go to bed at the same time about half the time, and often not far apart the rest unless one of us was worknig late or watching a film or something. Now he never ever goes to bed with me or before me, he'd rather sit up half the night dicking about on his phone. But that's a different issue.

francienolan · 04/08/2019 23:41

We do now that we work the same hours.

When we first were married I worked evening shifts and would finish work around the time he needs to go to bed. I would stay up 2 or 3 hours longer and wind down. I prefer the way it is now.

Simonfromharlow · 04/08/2019 23:42

Me and ex h always used to. Not necessarily go to sleep at the same time though

joystir59 · 04/08/2019 23:42

We've been together 8 years, always go to bed together, no TV in bedroom

Musicalmistress · 04/08/2019 23:42

We do, always have done although I’m always asleep first as OH is a virtual insomniac at times.

alltoomuchrightnow · 04/08/2019 23:43

no because I work eves and I come home feeling 'wired', often home v late, v v overtired, takes me hours to wind down often all night

pigsDOfly · 04/08/2019 23:43

When I was married we never went to bed at the same time, husband was either out pursuing hobbies or watching tv.

My parents always went to bed at the same time. After my DF died aged 77 I remember my DM telling me that one of the things she missed most was having no one to cuddle.

TwistyTop · 04/08/2019 23:43

We always go to bed at the same time. The only exception being when DH is on nights, or if one of us has a big night out without the other one. We're old and boring though so that rarely happens.

expat101 · 04/08/2019 23:45

Married 20 years, lived together a bit beforehand. Generally, we do unless he has something not interesting on the TV then I will go and read. He usually isn't far behind...

Idontwanttotalk · 04/08/2019 23:45

DH and I have always gone to bed at the same time. We just do it naturally.

peachgreen · 04/08/2019 23:45

Yes. We agreed to always do so at the beginning of our marriage and we always have. Even when I was pregnant and going to bed at 8pm DH would come up with me and read.

alltoomuchrightnow · 04/08/2019 23:46

With my ex, never, because we couldn't share a bed. He had ADHD and was also the loudest snorer ever when he did finally go to sleep (well known for it.. no one would ever share a room with him) . He didn't share with his ex wife either. He would go about 3 days with no sleep (or just dozes) and then finally crash out for several hours.

PlaymobilPirate · 04/08/2019 23:46

We do probably 9/10 of the time. Been together 10 years and always have. We work the Same hours so we get up together too

Vanillelle · 04/08/2019 23:46

We do. Been together for 7 years, married 4. We go to bed at the same time every single night (save for the very odd occasion where he might be staying up for some sports thing).

PancakeAndKeith · 04/08/2019 23:48

Yes we do most nights.

We do around 5 nights a week unless on annual leave. Always have. I'm 33 and DH is 37. Have been together on and off for 16yrs though so maybe that's it 🙈

notangelinajolie · 04/08/2019 23:50

No we don't. DH has just gone to bed because he's tired and was up early this morning to go to work. Right now, I'm not tired and watching the news. Most nights 11pm is his bedtime - but I don't need to get up early and often stay up till 2-3am.

We don't have a big bed and it gets really squishy and hot in the summer especially when he's in snore mode. We both like our own space - he likes the bed to himself at night and I like the bed to myself in the morning after he's gone to work. I also sleep in the spare bedroom or the sofa if he's snoring too loud.

I think different bed times is perfectly normal. Nobody ever got divorced over it in my family. Growing up I don't think my parents ever went to bed at the same time - my dad worked nights. My Grandparents had separate bedrooms and were married for 64 years. We've been married for nearly 30 and it's all good.

Notgoodatchoosingnames · 04/08/2019 23:51

That's the only relationship advice my late grandmother gave me is to always go to bed the same time. She always did with my late grandfather even if he wasn't well. And they were happily married over 40 years before he passed. 4 years in and we don't always and it does make me sad we don't follow her advice x
