To not leave holiday villa at designated time tomorrow?

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 03/08/2019 01:20

We are staying in a rural village in the south of France and are supposed to check out of our villa at 10.00 am. Howver, tonight there is a concert in the village square (our villa overlooks this square) and there is a band that have played a 7 hour set at FULL VOLUME. They have gone from Ed Sheeran and Coldplay covers to full on heavy metal and still going strong at 2.14am local time. Currently we're into about the 10th minute of their homage to Feels Like Teen Spirit. I have my alarm set for 8am so that we can be up early to finish packing and cleaning. Aibu to move my alarm back by at least an hour? We won't be ready to leave by 10 but I have a long drive tomorrow and it is not safe when so sleep deprived! Needless to say I am enormously fucked off!

In the time you argued here for your rights, you could have slept if you were so tired. Check out on time and don’t be a

ReasonablyIntelligent · 03/08/2019 03:07

It's shit.
But you still need to be out by 10.

notangelinajolie · 03/08/2019 03:09

Finish your packing now. Have a lay in and set your alarm for 9.45. Easy Smile

cccameron · 03/08/2019 03:11

If it wasn't safe to drive after 6hrs sleep I'd never get to work and back. That's more than alot of people get every night.

The concert sounds like fun. Might have been a fun way to end your holiday if you'd have gone down and joined in. Definitely unreasonable to make some sort of stand and stay later. It's certainly not the fault of the owners or cleaners.

chatwoo · 03/08/2019 03:24

Presumably you've all gone to bed now, but you could have used the time when you couldn't sleep because it was too noisy, to do the packing.

Greeve · 03/08/2019 03:27

So British to criticise the law of the land you travelled to.

BritWifeinUSA · 03/08/2019 03:29

Shock horror! People enjoying themselves playing and listening to music on a Friday night in summer! How dare they! Perish the thought anyone should enjoy their weekend.

Sittingonthedock8 · 03/08/2019 03:32

It’s rude and inconsiderate to be late leaving. Whatever your issues they are not the problem of the cleaner or next holidaymakers.

Marchitectmummy · 03/08/2019 03:43

Why didn't you do all the packing, tidying while waiting to go to sleep rather than leaving it till tomorrow?

YABU....

Dieu · 03/08/2019 05:25

Couldn't you have done all your packing and cleaning up while the concert was on?

Dieu · 03/08/2019 05:26

But that said, it does no harm to ask if you can vacate slightly later. They may not even have another consecutive booking for the place.

SeaEagle21 · 03/08/2019 05:33

I've spent my entire adult life driving to work on less than 8 hours sleep. Get over yourself and vacate at the correct time.

Wallywobbles · 03/08/2019 05:39

The cleaners probably have 3 lots of changeovers to do tomorrow. They absolutely cannot do their job if you're still in. Please don't do this.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 03/08/2019 05:41

What's with the "I drive to work on less sleep than that" comments? Unless you drive from the South of France to (presumably) England for work it's hardly comparable is it?

YABU though OP. You should have packed ready to go and set your alarm for 9.30. if you're too tired to drive then service station for a break and a snooze but you can't leave the villa after 10am unless you want to risk being charged sorry

Yeahnahmum · 03/08/2019 05:46

Get out by 10 ffs op

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 03/08/2019 05:51

How would the villa owner know about the concert though to warn you?

I do sympathise. Everything seems
We're no when you can't sleep. You know you need to go at 10 though. What is left to do?

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 03/08/2019 05:51

Wrong even!

BetsyBigNose · 03/08/2019 06:07

Unless the owner of the villa, the villa's cleaners and the family who are due to arrive next after you were the organiser, band and hosts of the concert, then YWBU to overstay, as they are the ones who you would be passing your convenience on to.

It wasn't your fault that the concert kept you awake, just as it wouldn't be the fault of the owners, cleaners or new guests if their day were to be disrupted by you staying on past your agreed check out time.

I totally understand where you're coming from though @Nextphonewontbeasamsung - I'd be pretty pissed off at being kept awake when I had a long drive (particularly one where I would have to drive on the 'wrong' side of the road Grin) ahead of me the next morning. It would feel good to hold someone accountable and I think in this case, I'd find it cathartic (once I was safely home – or I’d dictate it to DH to help me stay awake as I drove!) to find the email address of the concert organiser and let them know how disappointed I was with their lack of consideration towards people who had travelled to visit their area, only to be aurally assaulted until 2:30am, without any prior warning. I'd also leave shitty reviews all over the internet for anything or anyone connected to it - but then I can be really petty!

I would also make sure that you detailed your displeasure at the failure to inform you that the concert was happening when you next contact or review the villa/the owner/your overall experience. Make sure that if this is a regular event, they realise that it's imperative that they let their guests know in advance. Had you known about it yesterday morning for example, you would have had time to get in touch with the owner and organise a later checkout time.

Is it worth trying to get in touch with the owner when you wake up tomorrow and organise it at the last minute? Or if you have their email address, you could just drop them a quick email (now, if you're still awake) saying something along the lines of:

Hi Owner,

As you may be aware; last night there was a HUGE concert right outside our villa, which we had not been informed about. The ridiculously loud music continued until 2:30am, so none of us were able to sleep much before 3am. As you know, I am due to drive back to the UK today and will now be facing this long and challenging journey on just 4 hours' sleep, which I'm sure you'll agree just isn't safe. If we had been told about the concert in advance, we could have worked around it and perhaps had a siesta yesterday afternoon to ensure that I'd had enough sleep. As it stands, I would not feel safe to drive on so little sleep, so need to be able to catch up on the sleep I have missed, which I estimate means that we will be ready to leave the villa at midday, rather than the previously agreed 10am. I'm sure you'll agree that safety comes first, and I'd hate for there to be an accident simply because I wasn't able to sleep for the extra couple of hours I needed. I understand that you may be a little concerned about the cleaners getting behind schedule due to our new midday check out time, but please let me reassure you that we are perfectly happy for the cleaners to begin their work from 10am, and would only ask that they don't enter the bedrooms until we are all up and about, so that my sleep is not further disturbed! I must try and get to sleep now, but I will see you at midday tomorrow, where we had previously arranged, so that we can hand over keys etc.

Many thanks for your understanding in this matter,
@Nextphonewontbeasamsung Family

Good luck OP, I expect you're fast asleep now and that the owner is understanding and takes pity on you in the morning. I hope you have a safe and uneventful journey home!

expat101 · 03/08/2019 06:10

I'm in two minds. Village squares from my experience are the hub of social activity for the area and surround, and you have chosen to stay right there. You must have some understanding and consideration that the village was going to provide for various aspects to your stay, and un/ fortunately, this is a side of the hub that you have to accept, happens.

On the other hand, I have stayed in a major hotel that overlooked a public park (didn't realise it at the time of booking and the pictures were pretty) that had late-night bands playing. Loudly and long. While we accepted city noise was part of the deal and experience, the band was another matter. But we learned from that, not to stay at that property again.

I think you are going to have to suck this one up to experience. Sorry.

Booboostwo · 03/08/2019 06:17

I live in rural France and this is very, very common. Each village has a big fete that lasts 3-4 days with consecutive party nights. While I share your frustration, and we get it every summer multiple times, it’s the custom in the country you are visiting. Maybe next time book very isolated accommodation?

None of that is the accommodation owner’s fault though. If you get tired on the way back stop at an IBIS and sleep - they are everywhere on the motorways and very cheap.

Obviouspretzel · 03/08/2019 06:24

This is a minor irritant that you've made into a massive problem that your considering punishing people for who had nothing to do with it.

lisbet679 · 03/08/2019 06:26

OP - You have learned an important lesson.

Never ever come on Mumsnet for a moan - for you will not get one iota of sympathy.

Some of the replies on here Confused!!!

She's just having a moan - no massive drama. No doubt they'll be out of the villa by 10am and ALL WILL BE WELL

FlyMayBe · 03/08/2019 06:32

Get over yourself, OP.

Be out by 10.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 03/08/2019 06:35

Yabu.

Dillydallyalltheway · 03/08/2019 06:35

If you stay past the designated time you will cause a knock on effect like others have said. It’s not fair for the cleaners to come in and work around you. Also even if the check in time for the next family is 4, then remember, they will probably be traveling the same amount of time as you will be traveling. Also as others have said, you will probably be charged extra if you don’t depart in time. Check the T&C’s.
