To not leave holiday villa at designated time tomorrow?

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 03/08/2019 01:20

We are staying in a rural village in the south of France and are supposed to check out of our villa at 10.00 am. Howver, tonight there is a concert in the village square (our villa overlooks this square) and there is a band that have played a 7 hour set at FULL VOLUME. They have gone from Ed Sheeran and Coldplay covers to full on heavy metal and still going strong at 2.14am local time. Currently we're into about the 10th minute of their homage to Feels Like Teen Spirit. I have my alarm set for 8am so that we can be up early to finish packing and cleaning. Aibu to move my alarm back by at least an hour? We won't be ready to leave by 10 but I have a long drive tomorrow and it is not safe when so sleep deprived! Needless to say I am enormously fucked off!

Oh I’ve just read the email, that is excellent! I’m assuming it’s a joke, but I really hope it’s not and that Betsy has sent things like that in the pas

I read a similarly crafted email from Betsy on another thread in AIBU this morning - the one about the op's extended family all wanting to use their house while on holiday. I recognised the 'style' straightaway. Strangely people on that thread thought it was really good 🤷‍♀️

Dieu · 03/08/2019 08:20

That email is deranged Grin

OMGshefoundmeout · 03/08/2019 08:24

It’s too late to help you now OP but I find 10am is a horrible time to have to check out of self catered accommodation but seems pretty standard. That last morning is always a whirlwind of tidying and stripping beds and finding yet another thing that needs to be taken out to the recycling. For that reason I always book a day longer than needed and leave on the afternoon of the penultimate paid for day. We are doing it later this month in fact, so instead of the frantic rush to be out by 10am we will lie in, have a leisurely breakfast, take our time over packing and clearing up, have a nice lunch somewhere local and be on the road about 4pm. For you that would have the added advantage of your being able to break your long drive with an overnight stay somewhere en route to the ferry.

Babdoc · 03/08/2019 08:25

It seems incredibly precious to think one can’t possibly drive after nearly six hours sleep!
DH and I once had no sleep at all on a night flight back from a Caribbean holiday. We landed at Heathrow, had a coffee, got in our car, and drove 450 miles home to Scotland. Because we had to - I was a junior doctor, and had a 24 hour shift starting the next morning.

colourlessgreenidea · 03/08/2019 08:25

Who the fuck would actually send that email!
Grin

Who the fuck would actually WRITE that email?!

danmthatonestakentryanotheer · 03/08/2019 08:28

Imagine Op you are the next guests to check into the villa you are in. On arrival you get told "the villa's not ready yet due to the last guest deciding to check out late so you'll have to wait an hour before you can go in"....what would your reply be?

HolidayLetter · 03/08/2019 08:29

The cleaner can start cleaning while we are still here

No they can't.

And as for that email suggestion...

Nothingcomesforfree · 03/08/2019 08:31

Op I would be out at 10am and use extreme tiredness as the reason to stay another night in France.
We had one if our best meals ever on an impromptu stay over somewhere in Champagne.
Think of of the hideous M20 or M25 or basically any road here in the UK as you drive massive stretches of empty carriage way in France. And fuel has just gone on a few pence this week.
I wouldn’t be rushing back Op.

SweetNorthernRose · 03/08/2019 08:32

I can't believe you didn't use the time you couldn't sleep to do the packing, dishwasher etc rather than moan on MN tbh.

MerdedeBrexit · 03/08/2019 08:32

OMGshefoundmeout - that is definitely the most sensible way to do it, but most people want to squeeze every minute out of the time in the villa/gite/airbn'b they've paid for, and not a moment less!
Otherwise, I'm with those who don't understand why the OP didn't pack as much as possible whilst the fete was still on, and then go and join in!

ticking · 03/08/2019 08:33

this is why i never 'plan' long drives. I got caught out once with a stomach upset and a 15 hour drive. I always make sure I have a backup plan on a long drive if necessary, for example in this case I would stop after 5 or 6 hours and do the rest tomorrow.

omione · 03/08/2019 08:33

How entitled are you being ?

Roussette · 03/08/2019 08:38

Don't you think the villa owner bears some responsibility for letting prospective guests know what is going on in the area at the time of their booking?

Oh purleeeeease! No! If I go anywhere I research this sort of thing and would know when a local fiesta or village thing was on. Do people really need their hands held like this?

As for the email, it's hilarious! A typical MN response to something that is the responsibility of the OP. I did laugh at expecting the owner of the property to be so so worried about the OP driving with less sleep than normal. As if!

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/08/2019 08:38

20 mins to go before op due to leave. Of course YANBU dear. The owner of the accommodation is clearly the same person as the organiser of the concert. So yes, stuff them. 🙄

gonewiththepotter · 03/08/2019 08:41

Yeah I’m very much of the same mindset at PP

If you were being kept up by the noise why not finish packing, sorting out rubbish and doing all those jobs you would have to do in the morning!

Unless it’s something like building works...etc it’s not up to the villa to notify you and it’s no more their fault than bad weather! We recently went to a very glamorous small Italian harbour town. We were only there two nights and one of them the while main square was partially shut down and crawling with Police/security. It was so big Italian tv awards show and we could hear music most of the night. Wasn’t the hotels fault though 🤔

colourlessgreenidea · 03/08/2019 08:43

Aw, bless Betsy and her ‘hobby’ Grin

Nope! Grin

TanMateix · 03/08/2019 08:45

The cleaner probably has 45 minutes allocated to each house and probably kids to pick up at the end of their shift. It is not your call to decide what is done because your contract with them ends at 10 am. Nor do you have the right to ruin the start of the holidays of the next guest just because the selfish twat staying in the house they have rented is having a strop because someone in the city they were visiting decided to do a concert without her permission.

Grow up and get out of there.

Purplejay · 03/08/2019 08:47

Yabu to consider leaving late. You should have packed, taken out the rubbish and put the dishwasher on last night when you couldn’t sleep. All you need to leave out is things for breakfast/drinks, a few toiletries and a set of clothes. Set your alarm for 9 and you would have loads of time to get out by 10. No need to strip the beds.

If you are still loading the car at 10, that’s probably ok but you need to be out of the property. In some cases the cleaners won’t turn up until 11 but if they do come at 10 they need to be able to crack on.

I wouldn’t expect to be told about this type of thing by the villa owners although I would have googled events while we were there at some point (though probably not before booking). Weren’t there posters up? If the owners live a bit further away, they may have no clue what the event was like anyway. I.e I’d bought as a holiday home/let and they hadn’t stayed while it was on.

As for the drive, you will be fine on 5-6 hours sleep. Just make regular stops for coffee/food and a walk round.

sammylady37 · 03/08/2019 08:50

find the email address of the concert organiser and let them know how disappointed I was with their lack of consideration towards people who had travelled to visit their area, only to be aurally assaulted until 2:30am, without any prior warning

Jesus fucking Christ, this is both batshit crazy and hilarious in equal measure.

Sounds like you think nobody should ever organize a concert or festival anywhere just in case there might be some tourists who want to sleep.

Aurally assaulted- good grief!

MsTSwift · 03/08/2019 08:57

I can imagine it now. “Sorry everyone this years summer fiesta is cancelled. There is an English lady with a 10am checkout staying close by. Please collect your things and leave quietly “

MustardScreams · 03/08/2019 08:57

YABVU don’t go on holiday if you don’t know how to behave. Honestly, you sound so entitled and selfish. Everyone that works in hospitality hates everyone like you.

It’s not the villa owner’s fault there is a concert. You should have researched the area better.

ifeellikeanidiot · 03/08/2019 08:58

Its France - unless OP has requested and paid for cleaners, the expectation is that the end of holiday clean is done by the holiday makers.

Obvs exceptions to this rule - but true for most French owned holiday rental accommodation.

Roussette · 03/08/2019 08:59

I love France, Spain and Italy for the concerts, fiestas, parties they have that go on till really late. A while back I went for an early morning run and there were party goers just going home!

But we must be sensible here. We must stop all forms of revelry like this. All fiestas that have been going on for a hundred years must be stopped. Even Bastille Day.

Just in case some British tourists need their sleep.
