I've been given a supervisory position at Costa.
I'm making fucking mistakes everywhere. I cried in front of everyone, I've dropped a cup which smashed, I've tripped on tables and I feel like I'm getting in the way of other people trying to work.

My eyes won't stop watering and I want to walk out so bad!! I've been working since 5 and I've got a half hour break but I can't take anymore embarrassment
😭

The first day in a new job is almost always awful. Pretend to yourself you're starting over and none of it happened. It'll get better!

PickettBowtruckles · 01/08/2019 10:28

Go back after your break, laugh off the mistakes as first morning nerves and start fresh. We all mess up on first days I’m sure. You got the job for a reason so you know you’re capable :)

Cornettoninja · 01/08/2019 10:32

Bless you. Deep breath and head back into it. Everyone makes mistakes and everybody cries. Own it. You’re nervous and it’s completely understandable.

Tomorrow will be better. You will have learnt so much today and will learn more tomorrow. Soon people (if I’m anyone to go by) will be looking at you like an angel because you provide their caffeine hit FlowersFlowers

Vesperia · 01/08/2019 10:37

congratulations on the new job, take a few deep breaths & declare that's how not to do the job & then do it better :-)

AuntyMarysBigRedPants · 01/08/2019 10:40

Just remember you must be good at your job for them to give you the role. First days are always shit.

IncrediblySadToo · 01/08/2019 10:43

I’m not st all clumsy, except in situations like that 🙄🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ If I had to do your job today I’d probably be writing your post!

Go back in and try again - you only have to do thus fucking awful first day once!!

🌷🍰

Glitterbug101 · 01/08/2019 10:55

BREATHE!!!!!

It's not a first day in hospitality without those types of mishaps.
You're in a supervisory position for a reason, whether experience or potential - you have got this!

Congratulations on the new job. Flowers

Goldenphoenix · 01/08/2019 10:56

Don't worry about crying, I cried in my current job in the first week. Was embarrassed but just laughed about it and put it down to nerves. Been there over a year now and am enjoying it.
You are only human, give yourself a break. This afternoon will be better.

mumwon · 01/08/2019 10:56

things can only get better! (need music note emoji Grin )

caughtinanet · 01/08/2019 10:57

Is it a job you've done before? Tbh that doesn't sound like normal first day on the job behaviour, at least not in any job I've had.

Are you sure it's the right job for you?

Rivkka · 01/08/2019 10:57

No one else will have even noticed

You've been given the job because you can do it. Deep breath, shoulders down and go make that lovely coffee Brew

Billballbaggins · 01/08/2019 11:00

The first day of a job where I instantly felt like I wanted to run I should have listened to my instincts. I am not a quitter so stayed there WAY too long. Honestly it affected me so much even though I actually got good at the job but it just wasn’t for me!
So keep calm and when you get home later either plan your next move to escape this job (it may just not be the right fit for you!) and find another or have a relaxing calm evening, do something that you love, have a good dinner and resolve to start afresh tomorrow. Flowers virtual unmumsnetty hugs to you!

Waveysnail · 01/08/2019 11:16

Have a coffee. Put in your brightest smile and slow down. It's ok. Day 2 will be better

chocolatemademefat · 01/08/2019 11:19

You’re just trying too hard. Give yourself a break and take a deep breath. Your employers obviously rate you so take comfort in that.

Butters83 · 01/08/2019 11:27

You got this! first days are historically always terrible. You have no idea what you are doing, you dont know anyone. I had a massive panic attack on my first day of this job on my lunch break because I just wanted to run home under the quilt!

GooodMythicalMorning · 01/08/2019 11:32

It will get better, bet you'll be fab at it. :)

IsobelRae23 · 01/08/2019 11:34

Here you go:- 🎼🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶

smokeytoby · 01/08/2019 11:38

you have ABSOLUTELY got this! Who doesn't make mistakes on their first day? I certainly did! And everyone you work with will totally understand as they were all new once too, right? You were given the job for a reason and that is because you are capable, strong and I am sure that you will smash it. So go back after your break, take a big breath, remember to laugh off mistakes as "first-day nerves" and remember that day two can only be better! :)

Best of luck in your new job xx

HappyNOTdriving · 01/08/2019 11:39

All these things are happening because you have got yourself so wound up.

Just take a massive step back. This is coffee not lifesaving surgery. It's ok to make mistakes while you learn because well

1, you are learning so of course you will make mistakes!

2, and what's the worst that can happen, someone isn't happy with their drink and you get them a new one or you have to pay to replace the cup you broke etc but no one is going to die and no one is going to have their life ruined even if some of the rude ones shout at you like it is

You are going to be absolutely fine, this time next month you will be doing this like a bloody pro!

smokeytoby · 01/08/2019 11:39

Also if it helps, my colleague fell down a flight of stairs at our work on her first day, all of our clients had to leave and be rearranged and an ambulance had to come and take her to hospital...and she is still working here 3 years later - hopefully it made you smile knowing that no matter how bad your day is going, at least it wasn't as bad as her first day! :)

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 01/08/2019 11:43

Ah it'll be fine. I've been in my job 8 months and still make stupid mistakes all the time. My boss doesn't seem to despair of me yet!

HellonHeels · 01/08/2019 11:46

Have you worked in Costa before? I'm assuming you have, and have been promoted to the supervisory role? First days are always awful, keep on keeping on X

Asta19 · 01/08/2019 11:48

I remember years and years ago, my first day as a barmaid. I was shaking so much that the first pint I served was slopping all over the counter! The guy I was serving joked that there was only half a pint left by the time I gave it to him! I felt so embarrassed. I soon got used to it though. I think we've all been there at one point or another.

HappyNOTdriving · 01/08/2019 12:04

Oh and I'm not saying that the job you do is any less important I'm just trying to take the fear of the actual real life consequences out of it for you!

I'll share my story.

When I was doing one of my first jobs at 17 (cleaning a private health club) I was bending down right under a sun bed (so imagine the position head under the sunbed, arse in the air facing out, in other words a vulnerable position!) to get behind it to get the pubes dust cleaned and I didn't hear one of the lifeguards come up behind me until he was right at my feet and said something. well did I not fucking crap myself!

I jumped so hard (and screamed too) in the air I smashed my head on the bed breaking it then the force bounced my head back down and I smacked my face off the pube covered floor Shock

He then insulted at my reaction just said in a tone of disgust I'm not a pervert you know and flounced out leaving me in a heap on the floor.

I should say I have ptsd due to childhood trauma so I do tend to have big reactions to small scares.

there that beats a broken coffee cup you can feel better now Grin

IScreamForIceCreams · 01/08/2019 12:11

Ah congrats on new job! Don't give up, breathe and tomorrow is a new day! First days anywhere are awful and you've been made supervisor because you must be good at your job! Have a hot choc, slab of cake and breathe!
