I've been given a supervisory position at Costa.
I'm making fucking mistakes everywhere. I cried in front of everyone, I've dropped a cup which smashed, I've tripped on tables and I feel like I'm getting in the way of other people trying to work.

My eyes won't stop watering and I want to walk out so bad!! I've been working since 5 and I've got a half hour break but I can't take anymore embarrassment
😭

Everybody's first days are horrible. Hang on in there, don't give up.

Until you know your job and colleagues better, it's going to be tricky, but you will get to a point where it feels like second nature - it will come!

TriptychDebbie · 01/08/2019 12:22

Mistakes prove that you're human. I'm sure the other staff would prefer that, to an uber efficient robot. It'll certainly make you more approachable.

Put it down to experience and plough on. We've all made mistakes (my fuck -ups are far too numerous to mention here, including accidentally telling an elderly customer that I loved him Blush
I'm sure you'll do a grand job Smile

Orlandointhewilderness · 01/08/2019 12:23

You'll be fine! Breathe and carry on. It'll be better tomorrow.

Nesssie · 01/08/2019 12:40

my first day working in a cafe, I tripped over nothing and launched an entire tray of drinks at a small child. Horrific.

Deep breathe, most people won't even notice the tripping etc. It'll get better.

kateandme · 01/08/2019 12:41

its ok.imagine if someone you loved had made the same mistakes.what would you be saying to them right now?

also how do you currently feel in ur mental health/about yourself.becasue id say this is going alot towars your reaction to the mistakes.
others with solid emotional health would see it as shit but would also be allwoing it to blow over.maybe even see it as osomething hilarious to share with family later.but your taking it on it seems as something your bad at and your bad becasue of it which is heightening your anxst over it and then i think propelling even more stuff to happen.
just try to breath.
this doesnt mean you shit or youve ruined it.it means what a bloody day!one that you can wait to get home and slouch on the sofa and half laugh and cry about.but not one to beat urself up about.
keep breathing.
like really deep breaths. in for 3.hold for 4.out for 5.and repeat.
it will be ok.what have you learnt so far.it will all start to bleed into your way of doing things and youll soon get the hang of it.

First day in a new job is pretty much always horrible. Be kind to yourself. No-one is going to expect you to hit the ground running on day one. Congratulations - onwards and upwards, you're going to smash it not literally

Rockbird · 01/08/2019 13:03

Go on then, I'll tell my first day story again. Went for an interview as a nanny. Youngest kid was 20 months. Here's me, trying to be Mary Poppins and playing with the kids. Put the little one up on my shoulders, walked through a door and....SMACK Her forehead hit the doorframe. Huge lump, screaming kid, I burst into tears.

I got the job and am her sister's godmother Grin

Palaver1 · 01/08/2019 13:20

First days are always shit ..

Panicmode1 · 01/08/2019 13:21

I got shat on by a bird (in my hair!) as I walked in to my first day in a new job - so I turned up looking terrible as I'd had to 'wash' it in the sink in the loos and try and dry it under a handryer......

Take a few deep breaths, and remember that they've given you the job so you must be the right person for it!

S1naidSucks · 01/08/2019 13:43

I was sent to shower a patient and didn’t realise that I had to turn the huge plug in the floor of the wet room, having only used baths before. I managed to flood every square inch of the ward and part of the hallway. They called in seven cleaners from the other wards to clean it up. 😳

Get the team together and say "right, I've done x,y & z today. I want you each to suggest something else that I am going to do before the end of the shift to make a prat of myself, and see if I can make it a full house". Hopefully they will be supportive (as well as gently teasing you). Tomorrow WILL be better, and one day soon you will look back on today with fondness.

avocadotofu · 01/08/2019 13:57

It will get better, you've got this. Change is really hard and being in charge is even harder because you feel like everyone is looking at you. In a few weeks it will feel like you've always been doing it.

KUGA · 01/08/2019 14:08

You are clearly good at your job.
Hence the supervisory position.
I think you are trying too hard.
If you run, theres more of a chance you will fall over than if you walk.

Kerrywerrywoo1 · 01/08/2019 14:08

Chin up buttercup ❤️
First days are often shit, people expect you to remember the job in 4 minutes, well you WONT and that’s NORMAL :) do your best. Make friends with everyone so they help you while you adjust! They might take some pressure of you ;) juts breath, don’t drink too much coffee makes you jittery and just do what you can. :)

Rainbowknickers · 01/08/2019 14:17

On my first day I threw a hot tray with 50 red hot chicken nuggets-all over my boss and his boss!
Thankfully they took it well
Another time I managed to steam my bosses fingers

Deep breath-your gonna be fine

supersop60 · 01/08/2019 14:26

Congratulations on the new job. One day, you'll be saying to your colleagues - "do you remember my first day? LOL"

BUT. Do Not Cry. You are not a child. Grit your teeth and carry on.

Gravelface · 01/08/2019 14:33

@WigglyWong

Empathy's your thing, isn't it?

JustDanceAddict · 01/08/2019 14:42

It’s just first day nerves. In my current job I had butterflies every day for the first few weeks as had no idea what I was doing, now it’s so easy I’m looking to move on. You’ll look back and laugh.

Imaysnapandfart · 01/08/2019 14:44

@IgotApositive I hope your day got better Flowers

goodwinter · 01/08/2019 14:48

Hope you're doing ok now OP! Hospitality is stressful and full-on especially at first - the good news is that you'll find your groove soon, and eventually you'll be able to run on autopilot even when it's getting horribly busy. 😊

IgotApositive · 01/08/2019 15:06

Thanks everyone!
That is my day just finished.
To add, no I have no experience. I will be a supervisor once training is completed ( in about 8 weeks ) so not technically a supervisor right now but I am certainly feeling the pressure of it!

The current supervisor finishes on Sunday and it's big boots to fill.

I had a cleaning job before this, 1 hour a day on my own so the newness of long shifts, an actual team to get on board with and a shit ton of new stuff to learn is weighing heavily on my mind.
It probably isn't the job for me but I am proud of myself for getting this far, I'm shit scared. I feel like I have no skills and nothing good to bring to the team but the manager seen something in me so I just gotta find that and fake it until I make it!

But by God is it stressful having 6 people shout their orders at you Blush looks like you need more than 2 hands for that type of job!! Not in until 12 tomorrow so hoping DP takes the kids so I can lie in Grin

Thank you all, I definitely feel bettèr

If it helps, my first day working in a new bar I poured a pint and as I went to hand it to the customer I caught the bottom of the glass on the edge of the bar and ended up throwing the entire pint over the customer, I couldn't find anything and kept getting really flustered and I dropped an ashtray which obviously smashed because it was that kind of day.

I worked there happily for years. (I also married the customer I'd thrown the pint on, turns out covering a man in beer is quite the conversation starter lol).

SalemSpellman · 01/08/2019 15:21

I'm 2 weeks into my new job and keep making mistakes. I told my boss that I was going to leave, she talked me out of it.

It's horrible starting a new job, everyone seems so efficient. Give a bit of time and you will realise they are good at covering their mistakes. No one is perfect!

transformandriseup · 01/08/2019 15:40

I think you need to leave - this clearly isn't the right job for you if this is happening.
