I personally don't get it. It smells stomach turning and tastes stomach turning. Both my parents drink it, although my dad prefers tea. I prefer tea but rarely drink it, I drink hot chocolate more and don't often drink that either. How can people like it? Those who drink it, does it taste bitter/burnt to you? I know really, I am not BU because I can't help I don't like it, just for lighthearted chatter really lol

I'm the opposite as well. Love costa coffee, insomnia coffee, cafe nero - all good coffee, but starbucks, bleurgh the only way you get a decent coffee there is by asking for the filter coffee 'pike' I think. A starbucks americano is awful.

Starbucks also manage to fuck up TEA.

31RueCambon · 20/07/2019 14:34

Starbucks only stay in business because they have wifi, toilets, it's a handy meeting place, they tend to be in busy places.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 20/07/2019 14:38

I love Starbucks, I do like the taste of coffee, but with cream, sirups added. I don't like it bitter.

I wouldn't eat raw chocolate either, need all the sugar and added flavours to it.

Same thing.

Glitter99x · 20/07/2019 17:31

I’m not sure if I have a coffee gene, the smell I can tolerate but the taste of it tastes burnt and is gag worthy to me.

Coffee is great but you need a decent one. Best best are independent hipster coffee shops, definitely not Costa which is rank. Instant coffee is absolutely foul

Camomila · 20/07/2019 17:41

I love coffee, my favourite is espresso with a little bit of sugar.
When I was a teenager waitressing me and my cousin (it was her families restaurant) used to use the coffee machine to make all sorts of lovely iced coffees with random liquors from the bar slipped in.

Mind you Italian DC are weaned on coffee from very young...kidding, its caffe' d'orzo which is a warm barley drink but it's not very sweet at all.

hazell42 · 20/07/2019 17:48

Gosh, I have drunk my coffee black without sugar for nearly 40 years
Never realised that made me a psychopath
I thought it was because I have an impaired sense of taste and I can only sense strong tasting foods
You live and learn

Millimollimandi · 20/07/2019 17:59

I find Starbucks coffee fine but Costa coffee tastes like watered milk to me.

Starbucks coffee tastes bitter and burnt to me - but I am addicted to Costa! I hate tea, all I can taste is tannin, and I also can't drink wine (tastes like vinegar and I hate vinegar) or eat coriander - apparently I must a gene that causes this as it is well known...

Doormat247 · 20/07/2019 18:14

OP I'm with you on this one - I hate coffee with a passion.
The only hot drink I like is hot chocolate but that's just an occasional thing. I have no idea how people can stand to drink coffee every day.
I gag when my colleagues have their strong coffee each morning 🤢.

I've just been to Costa Rica and their coffee doesn't stink! I actually found it bearable to be around.

Likethebattle · 20/07/2019 19:00

I think the same about tea, smells rank and tastes absolutely foul. How can do many people drink it.

Give me coffee any day!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 20/07/2019 20:26

I love it, but only with milk & sugar. It's sort of like dark chocolate, rich, a little bitterness, but smooth & satisfying. I'm preg and caffeine free and god I miss a good coffee. I have decaf but it's never quite as nice.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 20/07/2019 20:27

To me the burnyness is almost like toast, it's toastedness, not burned, iyswim

wotsittoyou · 20/07/2019 20:32

Dh usually drinks his black, sugar-free, coffee with a large Aero or similar. Psycho? Or does the otherwise sweet-tooth preclude it?

Loopytiles · 20/07/2019 20:35

Not liking food / drink - fair enough.

Not liking LOTS of things - fussy.

Not understanding how ANYONE can like something - self-absorbed!

Glitter99x · 21/07/2019 00:06

@Loopytiles it's lighthearted for goodness sake.

It is fascinating how some people find cucumber bitter, some people find wine vinegary, some people find coriander soapy etc.

I didn’t like coffee until I was mid 30s. Before that I only liked it with a ton of sugar. Gradually I cut down on the sugar and could drink unsweetened milky coffee. I’ve graduated to flat whites but espressos are still well beyond me.

Agree that most chain coffee tastes burnt - Caffe Nero is a bad culprit. Try an independent coffee shop, especially one that also sells avocado on sourdough Grin

Onions are another taste I used to hate but have grown into.

Still hate olives though - maybe I’ll like them when I’m 50 Grin

hamptonmummy · 21/07/2019 17:20

I love strong black coffee. My parents drank it & I started drinking it at 10 or 11. I drink about 5/6 cups a day with 2 teaspoons of coffee !!

DampSquid · 21/07/2019 17:23

Weirdly I used to drink coffee all the time, it was favourite morning drink. However after my second pregnancy I now strongly dislike the smell and don't drink it anymore. I obviously didn't drink it when I was pregnant, I also had horrendous sickness and went off most food and drink. Coffee (and dried apricots) I still don't want 12 years later

exaltedwombat · 21/07/2019 17:35

Don't like instant coffee. Recently (and in my late 60s) I've developed a taste for 'proper' coffee. 'Builder's tea' remains my favourite though.

bobsyourauntie · 21/07/2019 17:36

I didn't drink coffee until I was about 14. I like 1-2 cups a day now in the morning. I like it milky and with sugar or I can't drink it.

I always put the milk and sugar in while the kettle is boiling and I like the way it tastes. If others make it with boiling water first and a splash of milk, it can be bitter and not very nice.

My favourite thing is my Tassimo machine and I make Costa Latte's in it when I am working at home.

DarlingNikita · 21/07/2019 17:36

I just like the smell, taste and the caffeine hit.

jillybeanclevertips · 21/07/2019 17:36

Who gives a Flying F* who likes coffee or not, and why or how ??? Get a life people, I don't take drugs and can't understand folk that do but all this angst over coffee ? OMG, complain about something worthwhile, Like child abuse or spousal abuse. P.s. Yeah I love coffee.

Lincslady53 · 21/07/2019 17:37

There are only 2 different types of coffee bean, Arabica and Robusta. The difference comes from the conditions they are grown in, and how they are roasted. I like strong Vietnamese coffee. Just filtered brewed with a drop of milk. Vietnamese coffee is mainly Robusta, but is roasted with butter which gives it a sweet, chocolatey flavour. It is lovely.
