I personally don't get it. It smells stomach turning and tastes stomach turning. Both my parents drink it, although my dad prefers tea. I prefer tea but rarely drink it, I drink hot chocolate more and don't often drink that either. How can people like it? Those who drink it, does it taste bitter/burnt to you? I know really, I am not BU because I can't help I don't like it, just for lighthearted chatter really lol

My theory is... if there is not much you don't like, you don't necessarily have a sweet tooth, you're the sort to eat or try anything... you will be a coffee drinker.

well, I will blow your theory apart Grin

I eat pretty much anything. Love all the foods people have listed as bitter, love spicy food, will try anything, I've lived all over the world and eaten some very 'interesting' things.
Don't like coffee.
The only other food I actively dislike is peanut butter, but in satay sauce it is delicious!

UnaCorda · 20/07/2019 09:59

I don't understand people who pepper their sentences with "lol" when they haven't said anything funny, but each to their own. [shrug]

(Don't like coffee, either.)

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 20/07/2019 09:59

Well OP you drink echo falls wine so clearly have zero taste buds anyway.

SoyDora · 20/07/2019 10:00

Weirdly, DH will eat anything. The only thing he doesn’t like is fresh tomato. We eat out a lot including Michelin starred restaurants all over the world and he does the majority of our cooking. He doesn’t have a sweet tooth at all. But he hates coffee! I think a large part of it for him though is that he just doesn’t understand hot drinks. If he’s thirsty he drinks water.

Kanga83 · 20/07/2019 10:01

Love a soya flat white! I cannot function until I've had my fix in the morning. However the way you feel about coffee is the way I feel about tea and beer. 🤢

Sooverthemill · 20/07/2019 10:01

I don't understand how people like the taste of alcohol or chocolate for that matter. We are all different

BuildBuildings · 20/07/2019 10:01

Sugar and milk spoil coffee. I just like the taste.

LaMarschallin · 20/07/2019 10:03

Like @Ragwort, I loathe tea (it smells even worse with milk in).
However, nearly everyone (seems to me) assumes that everyone drinks it and will plop a cup next to you often without asking.
So I drink the blooming tea.

The only thing I really struggle with (and I've eaten to be polite, but gagged slightly) is egg white.

It's a texture thing. The idea of a poached egg with avocado sounds lovely. But I can't enjoy it.

Anybody else have a "texture" problem?

I do like coffee.
And haven't met anything else (within reason), now I'm an adult, that I can't eat/drink.

I was a hopelessly fussy child, though Smile

MissingTheMissletoe · 20/07/2019 10:04

I add milk and sugar, doesn’t taste bitter to me (but I also drink instant coffee not “real” coffee).

Now strawberries are a completely different kettle of fish. How on earth can anyone like those?!?

MissingTheMissletoe · 20/07/2019 10:07

@LaMarschallin my DS1 is like this, he can’t stand certain textures in his food like corned beef, mashed potato and mince that has gravy added to it so half the time I end up cooking a separate meal for him. Don’t force yourself to drink or eat something you don’t like even for the sake of politeness!

OnlyYellowRoses · 20/07/2019 10:10

I'm the same about gin 🤮

MiniMum97 · 20/07/2019 10:14

I LOVE coffee. I love drinking it in almost all of its time and anything coffee flavoured.

I also like bitter tasting foods/drinks like Campari though.

I DO NOT like this trend that seems to be about for burnt tasting coffee though. Burnt things do not taste good.

Sakura7 · 20/07/2019 10:14

Do people really think cucumber tastes bitter? It tastes really mild and sweet to me.

Most people are like you. But those of us who have 'the gene' find it disgusting. To me it's the strongest tasting/smelling food out there and not in a good way.

I used to work in an open plan office and the kitchen was at the other end of the floor from me. Could never smell anything until a new girl started bringing in a whole cucumber to eat for her lunch every day (on its own!). I had to go outside every time. Thankfully she was a temp, so this only lasted a few weeks.

Sakura7 · 20/07/2019 10:17

I get the textures thing, it's the reason I hate onions and raw tomato. Slimy gickyness.

Herefortheduration · 20/07/2019 10:22

Coffee is awful but infinitely better than tea, that's just horrendous. I never drink hot drinks.

LaMarschallin · 20/07/2019 10:25

Don’t force yourself to drink or eat something you don’t like even for the sake of politeness!

I know it's silly.
But, for example, one time was when I was visiting a bereaved lady who would have been upset that I hadn't drunk the tea.
(I avoided the Kool Aid though Wink).

And it's nice to know I'm not alone, Sakura7

flirtygirl · 20/07/2019 10:43

I love coffee but the smell of eggs makes me heave.

Meat is putrid and smells foul. As do brussels and cabbage.

However, thank goodness we all like different things.

Roussette · 20/07/2019 10:47

steppemum and Dora that's my theory out the window then! I came up with it because the only non coffee drinkers I know have a huge list of things they don't eat too!

Everything on your list Verily are foods I love. But I adore salty, spicy and bitter. Salt and vinegar crisps, the stronger the better... yum. Gherkins and pickled onions are food of the gods. Love anything vinegary. Cucumber slices in the right gin and tonic, died and gone to heaven!

Just not sure how you can call avocado bitter? It's so mild.

CitadelsofScience · 20/07/2019 10:48

Nrtft but my coffee doesn't taste burnt or bitter because I make it properly in a way that tastes good to me.

How anyone can open a pot of olives and not immediately run to the loo to have a look inside the bowl, I have no idea. I did just this last week when my dh opened a tub of olives, vile smelling things.

notmylittleangel · 20/07/2019 11:28

Try the Starbucks blonde roast- it has no bitter taste at all.

ZaraW · 20/07/2019 11:57

I've been told by coffee lovers that Starbucks is for people who don't appreciate real coffee with all the milk, syrups and other crap they add to it.

CookPassBabtridge · 20/07/2019 12:42

I love coffee but only with milk and a ton of sweetener, it's a beautiful concoction! so I kind of agree that I don't like the true plain taste of coffee on its own.

SlipperOrchid · 20/07/2019 12:59

I've been told by coffee lovers that Starbucks is for people who don't appreciate real coffee with all the milk, syrups and other crap they add to it.

All those are extras and optional though. Personally I don’t add anything. I have family in Spain who wouldn’t dream of going to Starbucks. They prefer small strong expresso coffee that they drink quickly while standing at the counter. They often add ice cubes to it too!

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 20/07/2019 13:10

Starbucks is shite. As is Echo Falls wine.

I used to think I didn't like coffee, until I started drinking it black and unsugared. And yes, I also prefer it slightly tepid so I might start putting ice cubes in it Grin

People who drink lattes laden with syrup in those awful tall glasses should just give up and order the milkshake that they're secretly craving.

SerenDippitty · 20/07/2019 13:32

I find Starbucks coffee fine but Costa coffee tastes like watered milk to me.

I’m the opposite, find Starbucks undrinkable. Love olives, they taste of hot sunshine and cloudless blue skies to me. Like cucumber too.
