AIBU to not understand how the people who drink coffee can like coffee?

I personally don't get it. It smells stomach turning and tastes stomach turning. Both my parents drink it, although my dad prefers tea. I prefer tea but rarely drink it, I drink hot chocolate more and don't often drink that either. How can people like it? Those who drink it, does it taste bitter/burnt to you? I know really, I am not BU because I can't help I don't like it, just for lighthearted chatter really lol

I love Coffee but do need a sugar in it although will drink without when people forget I have it! my love for it is mainly down to the smell a really good rich coffee is the best also it's down to the fact I got put off tea mainly down to it being made too strong. 're other people's dislikes olives are vile I have tried them, I also wonder how people eat them, and have tried Campari which also horrible my Gran used to love it. It is funny how also tastes change, I used to hate tomatoes and onions when I was younger but now love them

I don't drink coffee, or any hot drinks at all, but I do like the smell of good-quality coffee, and I like coffee flavoured stuff; I love coffee cake. Anyway, I moved to Canada last year and I seem to be a total anomaly here; everyone is completely obsessed with coffee. People can't seem to function unless they're clutching a $6 cup of artisan single-bean limited-harvest Joe 😄 DP (Brit but been here a very long time) is completely obsessed with the stuff. He's a total addict, he drinks a lot of very strong coffee every day. He bought a $600 coffee machine a few months ago and orders a specific type of bean to be delivered from a specific roaster in Vancouver each month (we do not live in Vancouver!). I think it's a bit crazy and I'm glad I'm not that dependent on anything that I can't function without it. I just let him get on with it though, god knows what he'd be like without the stuff, doesn't bear thinking about 😄

VetOnCall · 22/07/2019 03:45

Oh, and he does have milk in it but never sugar, apparently that would be sacrilege. He's the biggest coffee snob!

floribunda18 · 22/07/2019 04:28

I don't really like the taste of tea, but it is palatable with milk and sugar. The basic taste of coffee is lovely though.

BusterGonad · 22/07/2019 05:38

I love a cup of tea (white no sugar), brewed with boiling water, non of this semi hot from a hot tap type of thing. I enjoy coffee but it really irritates my IBD so I don't drink it too much and when I do it's a latte or something similar, black is just too harsh on my poor bowels!
I'm not a fizzy drink lover at all, give me a fresh juice or an iced tea any day.
I love beer and red wine!

BusterGonad · 22/07/2019 05:40

Can I just add, I've noticed that 'the youth' today do not drink hot drinks. What the devil is this all about??? Confused

Moodyfoodie · 22/07/2019 06:08

Much prefer it to hot chocolate, Sprite or Fanta..the sugar content in those will quickly send your teeth rotten!

DuploRelatedInjury · 22/07/2019 07:08

I quite like the smell of coffee, but hate the taste. It's always been a "grown-up" drink in my mind - we were allowed tea from a young age but not coffee - and every so often I convince myself that I am an adult so will therefore like coffee now, and try it again. I still don't.

FyEnwiYwLucy · 22/07/2019 08:24

Reading this makes me realise I don’t have anything that I REALLY dislike, only things I would have in small doses. Love coffee, though.

Tinkerbelle57 · 22/07/2019 08:34

Each to their own I say 😁

I love coffee and tea.

What I can’t understand is smoking 🤮

However, I don’t like olives, yoghurt, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, aubergine and probably a lot more but I understand if others like them.

bobo26 · 22/07/2019 08:45

I drink black coffee without sugar and I think you just become accustomed to the taste over time.

I started drinking it with plenty of milk and 2 sugars. I eventually reduced the sugar to just 1, then eventually started having sweetener (during my Slimming World phase).

After a while I cut the sweetness out all together and started reducing the milk. I was having that little milk there wasn't a point in me using it! Now the thought of having milk in my coffee makes me feel sick.

I never thought I'd be one of those people who drink black coffee but I love it!

Tessabelle74 · 22/07/2019 09:15

I love the smell of coffee, I like it in cake form but to drink it's devil's juice!

bengalcat · 22/07/2019 09:18

I love a couple of mugs of black , no sugar, in the mornings and if out for dinner will sometimes finish off with a double expresso .

Imawomanontheedge · 22/07/2019 09:55

Never once have I had a bad tasting coffee in Italy , on the other hand , here in the UK some of the coffee tastes rank .
Costa is very bitter and if having one from cafe Nero I ask for one shot. Rather drink coffee from an independent .

hobbeschild · 22/07/2019 10:11

I cannot stand the smell of coffee, so milk or sugar isn't going to make much difference.

Every so often I try it again, because palates are supposed to change as you mature aren't they. Still makes me vom.

If someone sits opposite me with a cup of coffee I have to move (or ask them to move it as far away from me as possible).

I can't even eat coffee cake. At a party once they served Baked Alaska, which I had always longed to try, and then I discovered they had used coffee icecream. The experience has scarred me for life.

ethelfleda · 22/07/2019 10:23

Yep! The Italians know how to make coffee! Not like the huge bucket of fish water you get from Costa and the like. I swear I tried one once and I could see the bottom of the cup!

ethelfleda · 22/07/2019 10:25

I can’t understand why people drink fizzy drinks either. They don’t quench your thirst and are pointless calories! I will just drink water during the day (with a few strong cups of coffee) maybe the occasional cup of herbal tea.

Antonin · 22/07/2019 10:46

I had my DNA tested by 23andme and the report said I am likely to drink more coffee than most people, which is true. So it looks like the propensity to enjoy the taste of coffee is genetic/innate. Whilst I like a cup first thing in the morning I do not get or feel any particular boost from the caffeine but enjoy the (unsweetened) taste. I also love coffee flavoured things like cake and desserts. I do not enjoy most bitter tastes and hate green veg such as kale for that reason.

HawaiianLion · 22/07/2019 12:02

Now if you had said AIBU to not understand how the people who eat olives can like olives? I would have said no YANBU. How anyone on this planet can eat olives is beyond me, but coffee is amazing. I love the stuff. Maybe I should change my name to coffee pot 🤣

ZaraW · 22/07/2019 13:16

Olives are delicious. My cat loves them too but only green ones. She will wake up from a deep sleep if she can smell them. She has no interest in cat nip but will roll around like crazy for a green olive.

Daddyjammy · 22/07/2019 13:27

I love the smell of coffee but can't stand the taste. However, the caffeine buzz from it is incredible if you only drink it about once a month to stay awake, which I do. Can't stand the smell or taste of tea, though.

They say for kids you have to get them to taste anything 15 or 20 times before they get used to it and I'm guessing it's the same with adults. Most of us know that the first time we tasted any alcoholic drink it tasted disgusting but, usually from peer pressure or the pleasant feeling of mild intoxication, we forced ourselves to get used to it. Personally, I've done the same with olives (mentioned several times above) and can now appreciate how some olives can be really nice.

Still don't see the point of tea, though.

PineappleSeahorse · 22/07/2019 13:30

They certainly quench mine.

Harls1969 · 22/07/2019 15:24

I like coffee, but it has to be instant, not proper coffee. I can't stand ice cream or pizza 🤷

theworldistoosmall · 22/07/2019 15:32

Love the stuff.
Black without sugar.
Read the link posted about in the beginning. If I remember will bring it up with my psychiatrist. He often brings up my coffee consumption, not because I'm a psychopath lol, because of other stuff.

Catsinthecupboard · 22/07/2019 17:28

@hobbeschild

But coffee cake is not coffee flavored cake.

It is DRY cake to be eaten while drinking coffee. In any flavor......although I've never seen coffee flavored coffee cake.
