I personally don't get it. It smells stomach turning and tastes stomach turning. Both my parents drink it, although my dad prefers tea. I prefer tea but rarely drink it, I drink hot chocolate more and don't often drink that either. How can people like it? Those who drink it, does it taste bitter/burnt to you? I know really, I am not BU because I can't help I don't like it, just for lighthearted chatter really lol

I am a self ashamed coffee addict and have been since I was a teen, I honestly cant go a working day without having a coffee in the morning. I have probably spent a fortune over the years on bought coffee.

In my defence, I am epileptic and when my seizures were out of control , coffee actually prevented them for hours. I actually got through uni exams without a seizure if I had a large coffee right before th exams. And I grew up in New Zealand's coffee culture..

Whilst my seizures have been controlled for years I still cant shake the addiction.

That said I am a coffee snob, I only drink instant if I have too, I have a coffee machine at home (grind the beans etc).

HellYeah90s · 20/07/2019 02:07

Oh it doesn't taste bitter to me and I have it black (if I make it in the coffee machine) with no sugar. Never tastes burnt either.

I love a flat white too, they just aren't the same in the UK.

Knitclubchatter · 20/07/2019 02:07

I’m one of those people (I gather genetic DNA related) coffee and nicotine smell the same.
So yes a coffee and an ashtray are near identical. Both gross.

eachtigertires · 20/07/2019 02:13

I love coffee but only drink decaf these days due to any kind of caffeine giving me the shakes and sweats (didn’t realize that was what was causing it until I gave up). Doesn’t taste bitter or burnt to me and I drink it black no sugar (although very occasionally with cream as a rare treat). I don’t like the taste of beer though.

Sashkin · 20/07/2019 02:21

Some people are much more sensitive to bitter tastes than others. I can barely taste bitterness at all.

We have a respirator mask fitting at work every year, they test it by wafting Bittrex (synthetic bitter smell) under your nose. I have yet to smell it with or without a mask on, which fucks up the test somewhat so let’s hope we don’t have another SARS outbreak Confused

As it happens I don’t like most black coffees because they often taste burnt (espresso and cold brew are fine), but I’ve never found it particularly bitter.

AcrossthePond55 · 20/07/2019 02:26

Love GOOD black coffee. Instant is rank, so is cheap ground coffee.

Start with good beans, dark roast. Grind them yourself fresh for each pot/cup. Never use a coffee maker with a glass pot & heated base, it burns it. Either use a pour through for one cup or a thermal carafe for a pot. My latest is making cold brew coffee now that summer is here. Iced cold brew with sweet cream. yum

It's funny but the other day I was actually pondering why I love coffee so much when it is bitter and I generally don't like bitter things.

DoctorTwo · 20/07/2019 02:32

If you don't like the taste of coffee go to Costa, their offering tastes nothing like coffee. It is beige in every sense of the word.

mokapot · 20/07/2019 02:33

@Glitter99x
I dunno... just try it! Grin

mokapot · 20/07/2019 02:50

And make it in a mokapot Grin

OwlBeThere · 20/07/2019 02:54

I don’t get it either, but I think tea is worse! I don’t like hot chocolate either.

groundanchochillipowder · 20/07/2019 02:58

It's delicious. Instant coffee is not coffee.

Sparklfairy · 20/07/2019 03:00

I used to drink my coffee white, until I started working in offices. The rank dishwater I would get given when it was someone else's 'round' put me off. At least black was consistent and I got used to the taste. I will drink it with milk and sugar, but to me it's not 'coffee', just a sweet drink that tastes nice.

Slightly concerned about the psychopath study though twitches eye

YesILikeItToo · 20/07/2019 03:12

Ha ha - I drink my coffee black, and didn’t think much of it until someone told me that, “people who drink their coffee black don’t like it, they’re just showing off”. This seems untrue, but I started noticing who did and didn’t. And the interesting truth is - a bizarrely high proportion of people in my profession drink black coffee. Hmm

transformandriseup · 20/07/2019 03:12

I have never got into coffee, but I am the same with energy drinks.

Also beer.

ScratchyMap · 20/07/2019 03:16

I love the smell of coffee but hate the taste. Is broccoli bitter? It’s one of my favourite foods- doesn’t taste bitter to me at all.

I’ve obviously got the cucumber gene because I can’t stand them. Even if I pick them out of a sandwich, I can still taste them really strongly and it ruins the whole thing.

I’ve got the coriander-tastes-like-soap gene too Envy < not envy

Aria999 · 20/07/2019 03:17

Are you drinking good coffee?

I can see it's an acquired taste but I love it.

Bad coffee, however, is appalling. (Both instant and the awful tar like stuff you get in cafes that don't clean their coffee machines often enough).

SpaceCadet4000 · 20/07/2019 03:23

Can't wait for my strong black coffee every morning, it's delicious. We grind our beans for extra freshness. I think a lot of coffee haters started on instant though which just tastes of water and chemicals.

OneHanded · 20/07/2019 03:29

It’s fucking fantastic 😍

mathanxiety · 20/07/2019 04:10

You need to try Yaucono coffee from Puerto Rico. It's the smoothest coffee I have ever tasted. I am not generally a coffee drinker - I gave it up after many years of enjoying it when it started giving me problems (it gives me the shakes) but DD2 brought a bag of PR coffee home with her after a holiday there and prevailed upon me to try it. It nearly convinced me to give coffee another chance.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 20/07/2019 04:25

Funnily enough, I detest fizzy drinks like coke, Fanta and sprite. Over-sweet, gassy, just yuck. I like creamy coffees with sugar; the bitterness is diluted with the milk and sweetness. I'm more of a tea drinker though. We're all different!

beingsunny · 20/07/2019 04:34

Coffee is delicious, I gave up caffeine a few months ago and missed the taste so much that I order decaf long black almost every day.

YeOldeTrout · 20/07/2019 05:35

My parents love coffee. Always freshly ground. The smell is worse than the taste but both are bad.
Olives, Cucumber, mushy peas and broccoli are nice!
Tea I am used to (lots of milk).
I'm a weirdo who likes a little 2nd hand tobacco smoke, but I can't abide diesel fumes.

Wouldn't life be dull if we all liked the same things.

VivienneHolt · 20/07/2019 05:39

Lots of coffee sold in shops is bad coffee! It shouldn’t taste burnt but sadly often has been. Decently made coffee is rich and smooth. It is maybe an acquired taste though. I started drinking it at school in the belief it made me seem sophisticated, but it took me a while to actually start enjoying it. One of the better legacies of my 15 year old self.

Pemba · 20/07/2019 06:04

Obviously plenty of people like the actual taste of coffee, they're not just getting a caffeine hit. That's why you have coffee cake (my favourite yum), coffee centred chocolates etc. Also decaffeinated coffee of course.

herculepoirot2 · 20/07/2019 06:11

If you don’t like it, you don’t like it. But with approximately 500 billion cups of it consumed worldwide each year (400 billion of them by me, I expect), someone obviously does.
